The short answer
Electric delivery vans including the Rivian EDV used by Amazon Logistics have a floor-mounted battery pack, bonded composite body panels, and no conventional frame rails. High voltage isolation, panel bonding technique, and camera calibration change the repair entirely. We do body, structural, and refinish work in Yorba Linda.

What we see on electric delivery vans
An electric delivery van is not a diesel van with a different powertrain. The battery pack is a structural floor element, the body panels are frequently bonded composite rather than welded steel, and there is high voltage cabling routed in places a technician used to conventional vans would never expect. The first thing that happens to an EDV in our shop is a documented high voltage isolation procedure. Nothing gets cut, welded, or heated until that is complete and verified, because the consequences of getting it wrong are not a comeback, they are an injury.
The panel construction is the second departure. Bonded composite panels do not respond to conventional dent repair, cannot be pulled, and cannot be heat shrunk. Damage is either within the repairable range for a composite section or the panel gets replaced and re-bonded to specification. Fleet operators coming from a Sprinter background are frequently surprised that a dent which would have been a two hour push on a steel van is a panel replacement on an EDV. We would rather tell you that at estimate time than discover it during teardown.
The operating reality in Southern California drives the damage. EDV routes run out of Inland Empire delivery stations in Ontario, Fontana, Eastvale, Redlands, and Jurupa Valley into dense residential grids, with hundreds of stops per day and a driver who is out of the seat constantly. That produces curb strikes, mirror contact, sliding door abuse, and rear step scuffing at a rate no other class of van matches. It also produces heat load. A composite body sitting on Inland Empire asphalt in August reaches surface temperatures that stress every bonded seam on the vehicle.

What actually fails, and why
Bonded composite panel cracking and puncture
Composite panels crack rather than dent. A strike that would leave a recoverable dent in steel leaves a crack that propagates along the panel under thermal cycling, which is why a small crack on an Inland Empire route van grows visibly over one summer.
Lower body and battery pack shield contact
Curbs, driveway aprons, and parking blocks contact the pack shield and lower body edge. Any impact in that zone gets documented and inspected before repair proceeds, because pack enclosure integrity is not something to assess visually and move on.
Sliding door and step wear from extreme cycle counts
Hundreds of door cycles and driver entries per shift wear tracks, rollers, latches, and step treads far faster than on a conventional route van. Wear that would take three years on a trade van shows in months on a delivery station unit.
Camera and sensor mount disturbance
Mirror, bumper, and rear panel contact moves camera and sensor mounts. The system rarely faults, it just becomes inaccurate, which on a vehicle whose driver relies on camera-based visibility is a real operational hazard rather than a cosmetic issue.
Rear door and bumper step damage at dock and curb

What does EDV body repair cost compared to a conventional van?
Expect it to run higher for equivalent visible damage. Composite panel replacement with bonding runs $2,500 to $9,000 per panel area. Any repair requiring high voltage isolation adds diagnostic time at $285 per hour. Body and paint labor is $210 per hour. The reason is procedure, not markup, and we walk you through the line items before authorization.
Why can you not just pull the dent out?
Because the panel is bonded composite. It has no memory to pull back to and it does not respond to heat the way steel does. Attempting a conventional pull on it produces a stress whitened area and a crack that shows up two months later. On these vehicles the decision is repairable composite section or panel replacement, and we make that call after we read the damage.
How long is an EDV down for repair?
Panel replacement with bonding and cure is typically two to three weeks. The bonding adhesive has a cure schedule that cannot be compressed, and camera calibration happens after everything is back together. Delivery station operators should plan for the full window rather than the optimistic one, because rushing the bond cure is how a panel comes back separated.
Do you work on the battery or the drive system?
No. We perform documented high voltage isolation so body and structural work can proceed safely, but we do not service the battery pack, the drive unit, or any powertrain component. Engine, drivetrain, and DOT inspection work is outside our scope. Body, structure, panels, refinish, camera install, and calibration are in scope, all in-shop at Yorba Linda.

Yes, and it is worth coordinating. When several units come in together we can sequence them so the station always has capacity moving, and we photograph and estimate per VIN so your carrier or your fleet program gets a clean file per unit rather than a bundled claim that stalls in review.
