What we see on electric delivery vehicles, edv

Managing an EDV fleet is a different problem from managing a diesel fleet, and it shows up in the repair conversation immediately. Every one of these platforms puts the battery pack in the floor, which means the entire lower body is a pack-adjacent zone requiring documented high voltage isolation before any hot work. Every one of them uses bonded composite or aluminum panels that get sectioned or replaced rather than pulled. And every one of them has camera and sensor systems that need recalibration after panel, mirror, or bumper work. Those three facts apply across the platform mix, even though the parts and procedures differ by manufacturer.

The depot is where most of the damage actually happens, and fleet managers running delivery stations in Ontario, Fontana, Redlands, Eastvale, and the harbor-area corridors know it. Vehicles are parked at density, moved by staff who are not their regular drivers, and maneuvered around charging infrastructure with cables on the ground. Charge port doors get broken, charge cords get run over, mirrors get clipped in the aisles, and corners meet bollards protecting the chargers. It is all low-speed and all cumulative, and unlike route damage it happens on your property where nobody files a claim.

The downtime math is also different, and this is the part that surprises operators coming from diesel. An EDV out of service is not just a route uncovered. If it is sitting at a shop it is not occupying a charger stall, which can actually help, but if it is sitting immobile at your depot awaiting repair it is occupying a stall it cannot use and blocking a vehicle that could. That makes scheduling repairs promptly worth more than it appears on the estimate. We coordinate multi-unit intake, estimate and photograph per VIN, and sequence so your station keeps capacity. Body and paint is $210 per hour, diagnostics and calibration $285 per hour.

What actually fails, and why

Charge port door and surround damage

The port door is opened and closed every day by different people in a hurry, often in the dark. Hinges break, the door stops sealing, and moisture and dust reach a connector area that was never intended to be exposed.

Depot parking contact at density

Vehicles parked tight and moved by staff who are not their regular drivers pick up mirror strikes, corner contact, and door damage in the aisles. It is all low speed and it accumulates without anyone filing a report.

Charger bollard and infrastructure strikes

Bollards protecting charging equipment are exactly where a vehicle backs into a stall. They do their job, which means the vehicle takes the damage, usually at the rear corner or the lower rear panel over the pack.

Pack-adjacent lower body impact

Curbs, parking blocks, and driveway aprons contact the lower body directly over the floor pack. Any impact in that zone gets documented isolation and enclosure inspection before repair planning, on every platform without exception.

Composite panel cracking rather than denting

Bonded composite panels crack instead of deforming. A strike that would leave a recoverable dent in steel leaves a crack that grows under Inland Empire thermal cycling, visibly larger by the end of one summer.

Camera and sensor aim loss

Mirror, bumper, and panel contact moves camera and sensor mounts. The systems rarely fault, they just become inaccurate, which matters more on a vehicle whose driver depends on camera visibility than on one with clear glass all around.

What does EDV repair cost across a fleet?

Budget higher than an equivalent diesel van. Composite or aluminum panel replacement runs $2,500 to $9,000 per panel area. Charge port door and surround repair is $600 to $2,200. Any repair requiring high voltage isolation adds diagnostic time at $285 per hour. Body and paint is $210 per hour plus materials.

How do we minimize downtime across multiple units?

Bring them in as a coordinated batch rather than one at a time as they break. We stage intake so your station never has more units down than your route plan tolerates, estimate and photograph per VIN so each unit has a clean file, and sequence bonding and cure schedules across units so the shop time overlaps instead of stacking.

Why is the repair time longer than on our old diesel vans?

Two reasons, and neither is avoidable. Bonded panels have an adhesive cure schedule that cannot be compressed without producing a repair that separates later, and high voltage isolation plus enclosure documentation adds procedure time at the front of every lower body job. We would rather tell you three weeks and mean it than promise ten days and call you on day twelve.

Do you service the battery, charging system, or drive units?

No. We perform documented high voltage isolation so body and structural work is safe, and we inspect and document enclosure condition. Battery, charging system, drive unit, and powertrain service is outside our scope, as is DOT inspection work. Body, structure, panels, refinish, graphics, camera install, and calibration are in scope.

Can you handle fleet graphics and remarking at the same time?

Yes, and it is the efficient way to do it because the vehicle is already down. Fleet graphics, wrap, decal removal, and DOT reflective tape and compliance marking are all in-house. We standardize layout across the fleet so units repaired months apart still look like one program rather than four different attempts.
