The short answer
Walk-in step vans and parcel bodies are aluminum-bodied, low-stepped, and cycled harder than any other commercial vehicle on the road. Front corner strikes, riveted panel damage, bulkhead door wear, and step and floor fatigue dominate. We repair aluminum bodies, doors, steps, and floors at our Yorba Linda shop.

What we see on parcel and furniture delivery trucks
A walk-in step van is built to a completely different philosophy than a box truck. The body is riveted aluminum panel over an aluminum frame, the floor sits low so the driver can step in and out without effort, and the whole vehicle is optimized around a driver who enters and exits it two hundred times a shift. That optimization is also the weakness. Aluminum panel dents easily and work hardens, riveted seams open under repeated flex, and the low step assembly takes curb contact constantly because it is the lowest and most forward thing on the vehicle.
The front corners are the most damaged area on these bodies by a wide margin. Step van drivers sit far forward with the front axle behind them, so the front corners swing wide in tight turns and clip poles, parked cars, and gate posts in the dense residential grids these trucks work. On last-mile routes across the LA basin and out of the Inland Empire distribution corridors, that produces the classic parcel truck front corner damage where the fender, the step well, the door frame, and the front panel all get involved in one hit. Aluminum panel does not push back out the way steel does, so those repairs are section and replace rather than pull and finish.
The bulkhead door, the rear roll-up, and the floor are the wear items. The bulkhead door between the cab and the cargo area gets slammed at every stop. The rear roll-up gets loaded and unloaded with dollies and hand trucks. The floor takes wheel loads in the same tracks day after day. None of these are dramatic failures, they are cumulative, and they are the reason a five-year-old parcel body looks and feels ten. We repair aluminum body panel, riveted seams, doors, steps, and floors in-house. Engine, drivetrain, and DOT inspection work is not performed here.

What actually fails, and why
Front corner and step well collision damage
The forward driver position swings the front corners wide in tight turns. A single strike typically involves the fender, step well, door frame, and front panel together, and aluminum does not recover from the deformation the way steel does.
Riveted seam opening and panel separation
Body flex over years works the rivets in their holes. Seams open along the fastener line, the panel loses its shear connection to the frame, and water enters the cargo area along a seam rather than at any obvious damage point.
Bulkhead door hinge and latch wear
Cycled at every stop, hundreds of times a shift. Hinges elongate, the latch stops meeting the striker, and the door either will not stay closed on the road or has to be forced, which then damages the door frame itself.
Step tread and floor edge fatigue
Two hundred entries a shift concentrated on one tread. The tread surface polishes smooth, which is a slip hazard, and the mounting begins to loosen. The floor edge at the door threshold wears in the same way from dolly wheels.
Rear roll-up door bottom panel damage
Dollies and hand trucks strike the bottom panel of a partly raised door. The panel bends, the door binds in the track, and repeated forcing distorts the panels above it and wears out the rollers and spring.
Aluminum corrosion at dissimilar metal contact points
Steel fasteners and steel brackets in an aluminum body corrode galvanically, and coastal route humidity through the harbor cities accelerates it. The fastener swells, the surrounding aluminum lifts, and the seal at that point is gone.

What does step van front corner repair cost?
A front corner involving fender, step well, and door frame typically runs $3,500 to $11,000 because aluminum sections get replaced rather than pulled. Isolated panel section replacement is $1,200 to $4,000. Body and paint labor is $210 per hour plus materials, and a paid collision estimate applies, refundable against an authorized repair.
How many days will the truck be down?
Door and step hardware work is two to three working days. Front corner section replacement with refinish runs two to three weeks. Riveted seam rework across a panel is about a week. Aluminum bodywork runs longer than equivalent steel work because sections are fabricated and fitted rather than pushed back into shape.
Why can you not just pull the dent out of an aluminum panel?
Aluminum work hardens as it deforms and has far less elastic memory than steel. Pulling it produces a stress area that cracks later, usually at the worst possible place. On riveted parcel bodies the correct repair is to cut the damaged section out and fit new panel, which is more labor up front and does not come back.
Our steps are polished slick. Is that a repair item?
Yes, and it should be treated as a safety item rather than cosmetic. A polished tread with two hundred entries a shift on it is a fall waiting to happen, and step mounting hardware loosens at about the same rate. We replace treads, reinforce mounting, and check the step well structure while we are in there.
Do you handle engine work or DOT inspections?
No. Engine, drivetrain, and DOT inspection work is outside our scope. We handle body, aluminum panel, doors, steps, floors, lift gates, corrosion treatment, graphics, and refinish, plus DOT reflective tape and compliance marking. All work is performed in-shop at the Yorba Linda facility. Riveted seam condition and step well structure are documented at intake, since both are safety items on a walk-in body.
