What this work actually involves
Any Sprinter, Transit, ProMaster, Rivian, or late-model chassis with lane keeping, adaptive cruise, blind spot monitoring, or automatic emergency braking has cameras and radar aimed to a tolerance measured in fractions of a degree. Replace a windshield, straighten a frame, or change a bumper cover, and that aim is no longer valid.
The system will frequently not throw a fault when it is out of calibration. It will just be wrong, which is worse. A forward camera aimed a degree low reads the road surface as an obstacle or misses a vehicle entirely. This is why post-repair calibration is not optional on an equipped vehicle and why carriers increasingly require the documentation.
Static and dynamic procedures are not interchangeable, and the platform decides which one you get. A static calibration puts the vehicle on a level floor at a measured distance from a printed target, squared to the thrust line, with tire pressures set and the fuel and payload state within specification, since anything that alters ride height alters camera aim. A dynamic calibration requires driving at a specified speed on clearly marked pavement for a set distance while the module learns. Several platforms want both, in a required order, and running them out of order aborts the second one and sends you back to the beginning.
Motorhomes and van conversions add a problem passenger cars never present. A Class C built on a Transit or a Sprinter carries several thousand pounds of house behind the cab, so the finished vehicle sits at a ride height and a rake the chassis manufacturer never calibrated against. Add a loaded hitch, a full fresh water tank, and a set of aftermarket airbags and the forward radar aim moves again. We set the vehicle to a defined, recorded load state before calibrating and we note that state on the report, so whoever repeats the procedure two years from now works from the same reference we did.

How we do it, step by step

Pre-repair scan
Full system scan before work begins so pre-existing faults are on record and not attributed to the repair. The report is timestamped into the file, which matters when a module that was already failing finally quits at the end of a long body job.

Repair-aware planning
We identify which systems the planned repair will disturb, so calibration is scheduled rather than discovered at the end.

Vehicle setup
Tire pressures set to placard, fuel and water state recorded, payload normalized, and the suspension settled by rolling the vehicle rather than shoving on it. Every one of those changes ride height, and ride height changes where a forward camera is actually looking.

Mount and hardware verification
The camera bracket, the radar mount, and anything else disturbed during the repair is checked for fit and damage first. A bent bracket will happily accept a calibration and then drift back out of aim within a few hundred miles.

Static calibration
Target-based calibration performed at the manufacturer specified distance and height, squared to the vehicle thrust line rather than to body panels, since a freshly repaired panel is not a trustworthy reference surface.

Dynamic calibration where required
Driven calibration completed under the speed, distance, and lane marking conditions the platform specifies, repeated if traffic interrupts the learn before the module accepts it.

Verification and documentation
Final scan clean, systems exercised, and a calibration report produced listing each module, the procedure used, and the load state the vehicle was in, for your records and your carrier file.

Do I really need ADAS recalibration after body work?
If the vehicle has camera or radar-based driver assistance and the repair touched the mounting, aim, or ride height, yes. The system frequently will not warn you that it is out of calibration. It will simply be inaccurate, which is the more dangerous failure mode.
What does ADAS calibration cost?

Will insurance pay for calibration?

Which vehicles need this?
Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, RAM ProMaster, Rivian, and late-model chassis under Class C and Super C motorhomes are the ones we see most. If the vehicle has lane keeping, adaptive cruise, blind spot monitoring, or automatic emergency braking, it needs it.
How long does a calibration take?
A single forward camera static procedure is usually one to two hours once the vehicle is set up, and the setup is a genuine part of that time. A vehicle needing several static procedures plus a driven learn can occupy most of a day, since the driven portion needs clearly marked pavement and traffic conditions that let the module finish without interruption. We schedule calibration into the repair rather than trying to squeeze it in on the morning of delivery.
Can you calibrate a vehicle you did not repair?
Yes, provided it comes to our Yorba Linda facility and the underlying repair is genuinely finished. What we will not do is calibrate around an unfinished condition. If the fascia is still loose, the windshield bracket was bonded crooked, or the suspension has not been corrected, the procedure either fails outright or produces a number valid only for that afternoon. We scan first and tell you what has to be put right before calibration is worth performing at all.
What happens if a calibration will not complete?
The usual causes are a damaged or misaligned mount, a stored fault in another module that blocks the routine, low system voltage during the procedure, or a target setup outside tolerance. We work through those in that order. A failed calibration on a vehicle repaired correctly almost always traces back to hardware rather than software. Where the sensor itself was damaged in the loss, we document it so the part goes into the supplement instead of becoming an unexplained delay.
