The short answer
Low-roof vans such as the Mercedes Metris, low-roof Transit, and ProMaster City are built to fit standard parking structures and urban alleys. They take door dings, side scrapes, curb strikes, and dense-traffic impact rather than clearance damage. We repair panels, doors, and structure and refinish in Yorba Linda.

What we see on low-roof vans
The low-roof van exists to solve the problem of urban access, and that solution defines its damage profile. These units live in the LA basin because they clear structured parking, fit alley approaches in Koreatown and downtown, and can service accounts a Sprinter physically cannot reach. What that means in practice is thousands of low-speed interactions a year with concrete pillars, gate arms, curbs, adjacent vehicles, and parking structure ramps. Almost none of it is dramatic. All of it accumulates.
Structurally these are car-derived platforms with lower ride height and shorter overhangs, so the failure modes look more like passenger vehicle damage than commercial truck damage. Rocker panels take curb contact, wheel arches take parking scrapes, and the sliding door on the curb side takes the abuse because it is the side that faces every obstacle in a tight lot. Because they are unibody, a moderate side impact can distort a door aperture, and on a small van that shows immediately as a sliding door that catches at the halfway point.
For a fleet operator these are usually the highest-utilization units in the yard, which changes the repair conversation. Nobody is going to authorize a two-week structural repair on a van that returns $400 a day of route revenue if a staged repair keeps it moving. We break jobs into a safety and function phase and a cosmetic phase where it makes sense, so the van goes back out and returns for paint when the route schedule allows. Body and paint is $210 per hour, and a paid estimate is required before we schedule.

What actually fails, and why
Curb-side sliding door contact and track distortion
The curb-side door faces every pillar, gate arm, and adjacent car in a tight lot. A moderate strike bends the center track rather than the door skin, and the door then binds at midtravel even though nothing looks damaged from three feet away.
Rocker panel and lower body curb strikes
Low ride height means curbs contact the rocker rather than the tire. Repeated contact crushes the pinch weld, breaks the coating, and starts corrosion in a structural member that is difficult to inspect once the trim is back on.
Wheel arch and quarter panel parking scrapes
Structured parking ramps and column-adjacent stalls produce long scrapes at the arch line. On a unibody van the arch is a formed structural edge, so a deep scrape that reaches bare metal starts corrosion along a load-carrying crease.
Front bumper and fascia impact in stop-and-go traffic
Dense basin traffic produces frequent low-speed front contact. The fascia absorbs it, but repeated hits break the mounting tabs and the bumper starts sitting proud on one side, which is the tell that the impact bar behind it has moved.
Door aperture distortion after side impact
On a small unibody, side impact energy has fewer places to go. A hit that leaves a modest dent can pull the aperture out of square, and the sliding door and latch will report it long before anyone reads the panel as structural damage.

A scraped quarter panel repaired, primed, and blended runs $850 to $2,400. Sliding door track correction with roller and latch work is $700 to $2,200. A side impact that pulled the aperture out of square runs $3,000 to $9,000 with structural correction. Body and paint labor is $210 per hour plus materials, and estimates are paid.
These are our highest-mileage units. How do we minimize downtime?
Tell us the daily revenue number at intake and we plan around it. On many jobs we can complete the safety and function work in two to three days, put the van back on route, and bring it back for the cosmetic phase when your schedule allows. That converts one long outage into two short ones, which for a high-utilization urban van is usually the better trade.
My sliding door catches halfway. What is actually wrong?
Most often a bent center track or a distorted aperture, not a roller. Rollers wear predictably and produce a rough feel through the whole travel. A hard catch at one point means something is out of line. We check track straightness and aperture geometry before touching hardware, because replacing rollers on a bent track buys about two weeks.
Is it worth repairing cosmetic damage on a route van?
That is your call, but here is the practical view. Deep scrapes through the coating on the rocker or arch line are not cosmetic, they are the start of corrosion in structural metal, and treating them is cheap now and expensive later. Surface scuffs that have not broken through can wait. We separate the two on the estimate so you can decide by line item.
Do you handle mechanical work on these too?
No. We are in-shop body, paint, structural, and equipment install. Engine, drivetrain, and DOT inspection work is not performed here. We do handle suspension, brake, and tire service, twelve volt electrical, camera install, and upfit work alongside body repair, all at the Yorba Linda facility. If a repair uncovers a drivetrain issue, we document it with photographs so you can route it appropriately.
