The short answer

Delamination is the separation of the fiberglass skin from the substrate underneath. It shows as bubbling, waviness, or a soft spot. Repair runs $1,500 to $20,000 and up, or 10 to 100 plus hours at $210 per hour, depending on how far the separation has traveled.

What this work actually involves

A laminated RV sidewall is a sandwich. Fiberglass skin on the outside, then adhesive, then luan or a similar substrate, then foam or framing, then the interior panel. Delamination is what happens when the adhesive between those layers lets go. Once it lets go in one place, the failure spreads, because the edge of the separated area is now a stress concentration and it keeps peeling.

Two things cause it in Southern California. Water, which gets in through a failed seal and destroys the substrate bond from behind, and heat, which softens the adhesive directly. In the low desert we see purely heat-driven delamination with no water involvement at all, which surprises owners and frequently surprises adjusters. In coastal cities we see it start at the bottom seam where moisture wicks up.

The repair depends entirely on which cause you have and how far it has spread. Injection works on small contained areas with a sound substrate. Anything larger, or anything with a soft substrate, means opening the wall.

On an injected repair the vacuum matters more than the resin. The gap between a released skin and its substrate is usually well under a millimeter, and a thin resin pushed in by syringe travels a few inches before it stalls against its own surface tension. We lay out a pattern of small injection and vent ports, warm the panel so the resin thins and flows, pull vacuum through a bagged section to draw adhesive across the entire void, then hold clamping pressure with battens shaped to the contour of the wall until it kicks. Skipping vacuum is why owner-applied kits leave a wall bonded around the holes and loose everywhere between them.

How we do it, step by step

    Map the actual extent

    Tap testing and raking light across the whole panel. The separated area is routinely three to five times the size of what the owner pointed at.

  2. 02

    Moisture testing

    Meter readings through the wall to determine whether the substrate is wet. This decides the entire repair approach and it decides whether the claim is a covered water loss.

  3. 03

    Find and document the source

    If water is involved there is an entry point, usually a seal at a window, a roof penetration, or a slide. Repairing the wall without correcting the source guarantees a repeat.

    Core and adhesive identification

    We confirm what the wall is actually built from before choosing a chemistry. Block foam, honeycomb, and framed cavity walls behave differently under vacuum, and a resin that works well on one will starve or crush another.

What causes delamination on an RV?

Two things. Water entering through a failed seal and destroying the adhesive bond from behind, or sustained heat softening the adhesive directly. Southern California produces both. Coastal and inland units usually delaminate from water. Low desert units in Palm Springs, Indio, and the Coachella Valley regularly delaminate from heat alone with no water present.

Can delamination be fixed, or do I need a new wall?

Small contained areas with a sound substrate can be re-bonded by injection under vacuum. Once the luan or core has gone soft, injection will not hold and the skin has to come off so the substrate can be replaced. Very extensive separation is more economically repaired as a full panel replacement.

How much does delamination repair cost?

Does insurance cover delamination?

It depends entirely on cause. Sudden water intrusion from a covered event is generally claimable. Gradual deterioration and maintenance-related seal failure generally is not. This is why the moisture testing and source documentation matter so much. The finding determines whether you have a claim.

Can I stop delamination from spreading?

Only by correcting the cause. If water is getting in, sealing the entry point stops the progression, though it will not re-bond what has already separated. If it is heat driven, covered storage and a reflective roof coating slow it substantially. Doing nothing means it keeps peeling, because the edge of the separated area is a stress riser.

How long is the vehicle in the shop for this?

An injected repair on a contained area is typically five to ten working days once it is scheduled, and most of that is cure and refinish rather than hands-on labor. A skin-off substrate replacement runs three to eight weeks depending on how much wall opens up, whether a slide room or a window has to come out, and how much of the graphics scheme crosses the repair. A full panel replacement waits on the panel, and on a discontinued model that wait is the entire schedule.

Does covered storage really slow this down?

Measurably, on heat-driven separation. The mechanism is adhesive creep, and creep rate climbs steeply with panel temperature, so anything keeping direct sun off the sidewall and roof helps. A shade structure in Indio or Palm Desert does more for a laminated wall than any product you can wipe onto it. It does nothing at all for water-driven separation, which is a sealant maintenance issue, so if your unit is letting go at a window corner rather than in open wall area, storage is not the answer.
