The short answer
Emergency and warning lighting installation covers light bars, hideaway strobes, traffic advisors, sirens, and switch panels with proper fusing, routing, and grounding. Work runs $400 to $3,500, or 2 to 14 hours at $260 per hour mechanical and electrical rate. In shop install only.
01
What this work actually involves
Warning lighting fails in the field for one of three reasons, and none of them is the light head. It is grounds, it is fusing, or it is routing. A hideaway strobe grounded to a painted body panel works fine on the bench and browns out at idle in June. A light bar fed off an unfused accessory circuit takes out something unrelated when a head shorts. A harness run through an unprotected sheet metal pass-through chafes through in a season of vibration on Inland Empire yard roads. We install so the electrical system survives, which is why this work is billed at the $260 per hour mechanical and electrical rate rather than the body rate.
Color and configuration are governed by law in California, not by preference. Red and blue are restricted to authorized emergency vehicles. Amber warning lighting is what utility, tow, construction, refuse, and municipal service fleets are permitted to run, and there are placement and visibility expectations that go with it. We build to what the vehicle is actually authorized to display, and if you are a contractor fleet asking for red, the answer is amber and we will explain why before the truck comes in rather than after it is wired.
The physical install is body work as much as electrical. A light bar on a cab roof means a mounting method that does not leak, which on most cabs means proper penetration sealing and a backing structure rather than adhesive pads and hope. Grille and surface mounts need clean cutouts with sealed edges. Traffic advisors on a rear body need a bracket that will not resonate itself apart. In shop body, paint, structural, and equipment install only. Engine, drivetrain, and DOT inspection work are not performed here.
Systems and brands we work on: Whelen, Federal Signal.
Location: All work is performed at our Yorba Linda facility. We do not offer mobile, roadside, or fleet route service.
02
What the job includes
- Roof and cab-mounted light bar installation with sealed penetrations and backing structure
- Hideaway and surface mount LED strobe installation in grille, fascia, and body panels
- Rear traffic advisor and directional arrow stick mounting and wiring
- Siren, speaker, and speaker bracket installation and mounting
- Switch panel, control head, and console fabrication and mounting in the cab
- Scene, flood, and work light installation on bodies, racks, and rear frames
- Fused distribution, relay, and load management wiring with proper circuit protection
- Dedicated ground path installation to clean metal rather than painted panel
- Loom, grommet, and pass-through protection at every sheet metal penetration
- Amber warning light configuration for utility, tow, construction, and municipal fleets
03
When you need this service
- Warning lights that dim, flicker, or drop out at idle
- A light head that stopped working after a wash or a rain
- A blown fuse that takes unrelated accessories with it
- Corroded connectors or green wire strands at any light head
- A light bar mounted with adhesive that has begun to lift or leak
- Water staining on the cab headliner under a roof-mounted bar
- A new service or utility truck with no warning lighting installed at all
04
How we do it, step by step
- 01
Authorization and configuration review
What the vehicle is legally permitted to display in California, then the light configuration that fits the work. Amber for utility, tow, construction, and municipal service fleets.
- 02
Load calculation and circuit plan
Total current draw calculated against the charging system capacity, then a fused distribution and relay plan drawn out on paper before a single hole is drilled in the vehicle.
- 03
Mount fabrication and sealing
Brackets and backing structure fabricated for roof, grille, rack, and rear mounts, with every penetration sealed properly rather than relying on adhesive pads that lift in the first summer.
- 04
Harness routing
Runs loomed, grommeted at every sheet metal pass-through, and routed clear of heat, moving parts, and pinch points, because chafe is the most common field failure.
- 05
Grounding and distribution
Dedicated grounds landed on clean bare metal rather than a painted panel, distribution block and relays mounted clear of road spray, and every circuit individually fused to its actual load.
- 06
Control installation
Switch panel or control head mounted within reach without blocking driver sight lines or airbag deployment paths, and labeled so a relief driver can operate it.
- 07
Function and voltage test
Every pattern cycled, voltage checked at each head with the engine at idle and the system loaded, and the wiring layout documented for your maintenance file.

Questions about light bar, strobe and emergency lighting installation
Frequently asked questions
What does emergency lighting installation cost?
Work runs $400 to $3,500, or 2 to 14 hours at $260 per hour, the mechanical and electrical rate, plus the lighting equipment. A pair of grille strobes with a switch and dedicated fusing sits at the low end. A full build with a roof bar, hideaways, a traffic advisor, siren, and a fabricated switch console sits at the high end. Parts carry 100 percent markup under $100 and 35 percent over $100.
Why is this billed at a higher rate than body work?
Because it is electrical system work. Warning lighting installation involves load calculation, circuit protection, relay logic, grounding, and harness routing, all of which is billed at the $260 per hour mechanical and electrical rate. Body-rate work is metal, paint, and structure at $210 per hour. If a job includes both, the estimate separates the hours by rate so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
How long will the vehicle be down?
A simple two-head grille strobe install with fusing is a half day. A typical utility truck build with a bar, hideaways, and a switch panel is one to two working days. A full municipal or emergency build with a traffic advisor, siren, scene lighting, and a fabricated console runs three to five days. Equipment lead time is the usual variable, so we confirm stock before scheduling.
Can you install red and blue lights on our contractor trucks?
No. In California, red and blue warning lights are restricted to authorized emergency vehicles. Utility, tow, construction, refuse, and municipal service fleets run amber, and we build to what your vehicle is actually permitted to display. We tell you this before the truck comes in rather than after it is wired, so nobody pays for equipment that has to come back off.
Which lighting brands do you install?
We install Whelen and Federal Signal equipment along with other manufacturers your fleet already standardizes on. If you supply the equipment, we will install it. If you want us to spec it, tell us the vehicle, the work it does, and the visibility you need, and we will lay out a configuration and a circuit plan before anything is ordered.
Do you do any mechanical or inspection work on these vehicles?
No. In shop body, paint, structural, and equipment install only. Engine, drivetrain, or DOT inspection work is not performed at this facility. Electrical installation, fabrication, mounting, sealing, and finish work are what we do, and all of it happens at our Yorba Linda facility. We do not run route service.
