Street Sweepers Repair

The short answer

Street sweepers combine a debris hopper, water tank, broom and conveyor systems, and continuous curb-line operation at walking speed. Hopper corrosion, curb-side body abrasion, water system corrosion, and broom housing damage are the pattern. We repair hoppers, bodies, housings, and mounts with certified welding in Yorba Linda.

What we see on street sweepers

A sweeper spends its entire working life within inches of a curb at very low speed, carrying wet abrasive debris in a hopper and spraying water constantly to suppress dust. That combination is unusual and it produces an unusual failure set. The hopper holds wet street debris, which includes road salt residue, oil, metal fragments, and organic matter, all sitting in standing water for the duration of a shift. It corrodes from the inside like a refuse body but with the added factor of abrasion from the debris moving through it every time the machine loads or dumps.

The curb side of the machine takes the physical abuse. Gutter brooms ride the curb line by design and their housings, arms, and mounting take contact with curb faces, drainage grates, raised medians, and the occasional missed obstruction. On municipal routes across the LA basin and the older commercial corridors, curb heights and gutter conditions vary constantly, and an operator working at production speed cannot avoid all of it. Broom housing damage and arm mounting fatigue are the most frequent repairs we do on these.

The water system is the third area and it is the one most often deferred. Water tanks, mounting straps, and the structure around them corrode from a combination of constant wet, mineral deposit, and the vibration of a machine that is always running its systems. A tank strap that fails on a full tank puts a large mass in motion inside the body. We repair hoppers, tanks and their mounting, broom housings, body panels, and structure. We do not perform engine, drivetrain, hydraulic, or DOT inspection work.

Location: All work is performed at our Yorba Linda facility. We do not offer mobile, roadside, or fleet route service.

What actually fails, and why

Hopper corrosion and abrasion wear

Wet debris sits in the hopper all shift and moves through it abrasively on every load and dump. Corrosion and abrasion attack the same panels from the same side, so the floor and lower walls thin far faster than the rest of the body.

Gutter broom housing and arm damage

Broom assemblies ride the curb by design and contact curb faces, drainage grates, and raised medians. Housings deform, arm mounting cracks, and once the arm geometry is off the broom no longer contacts the gutter evenly.

Curb-side lower body abrasion and impact

Operating inches from a curb for thousands of hours abrades the lower body along its whole length. Once the coating is through, corrosion follows the abrasion line, and the damage runs as a stripe rather than as a spot.

Water tank strap and mounting corrosion

Constant wet plus mineral deposit plus continuous vibration corrodes tank straps and their mounting points. A strap that lets go on a full tank puts a very large mass in motion inside the body, so this is a safety item not a housekeeping one.

Conveyor and elevator housing wear

Abrasive debris moves through the conveyor housing continuously. The housing wears from the inside, and the wear concentrates at direction changes where the material impacts the wall rather than sliding along it.

Rear door and hopper seal failure

The hopper door seal lives in a contaminated path and takes a compression set from heat and debris. Once it stops sealing, debris and water trail on a street the machine just cleaned, which is the complaint that reaches the city first.

Frequently asked questions

What does street sweeper body repair cost?

Hopper floor section replacement runs $2,500 to $9,000 depending on area and plate thickness. Broom housing repair and arm mount reinforcement is $1,200 to $4,500. Water tank strap and mounting rebuild runs $800 to $3,000. Welding and structural labor is $210 per hour plus materials. A paid estimate is required.

How long is the machine out of service?

Broom housing and mounting work is two to four working days. Hopper section replacement runs one to two weeks. Extensive corrosion remediation across the hopper and lower body can run three to five weeks. Cities should schedule this into a period where route coverage exists rather than waiting for a failure.

Can coating extend hopper life?

It helps against corrosion and moderate abrasion, and it improves debris release so the hopper empties cleaner. It will not stop abrasion from metal fragments and gravel moving under load. On a hopper that is still sound, prep to bare metal plus a coating system buys real years. On one that already has perforation it does not, and we say so.

Our brooms wear unevenly. Is that a body issue?

Frequently, yes. If the arm mounting has cracked or the housing has deformed from curb contact, the broom no longer meets the gutter at the designed angle and it wears on one side. Replacing brooms without correcting arm geometry means buying brooms more often. We check mounting geometry before recommending anything else.

Do you service the sweeper hydraulics or engine?

No. Hydraulic, engine, drivetrain, and DOT inspection work are outside our scope. We repair the hopper, body panels, conveyor and broom housings, water tank mounting, cab, and frame structure, plus corrosion treatment, coating, lighting, and reflective marking. All work is in-shop at our Yorba Linda facility. Findings outside our scope are photographed and documented so nothing gets rediscovered later at a second shop.
