The short answer

Fire apparatus carry aluminum compartment bodies, roll-up doors, hose beds, ladder racks, and a water tank whose mass dominates the structure. Compartment door track failure, backing damage, tank mounting stress, and finish and lettering restoration are the work. We repair apparatus bodies and refinish in Yorba Linda.

What we see on fire engines

Fire apparatus is built around a water tank, and the tank changes everything. Several thousand pounds of water sitting high and moving in surge every time the apparatus accelerates, brakes, or corners puts a load into the body structure and the tank mounting that no other vehicle experiences. Over years of response driving, tank mounting hardware and the surrounding body structure take that surge loading continuously, and the failures show as cracked mounting brackets and distorted compartment framing adjacent to the tank rather than as anything dramatic.

Compartment roll-up doors are the daily-use failure item. Every apparatus has eight to twelve of them, they are opened and closed at every call and every check, and they run in tracks mounted to an aluminum body that flexes. Once a track goes out of parallel, whether from body flex or from a backing impact, the door binds, crews force it, and the slats and end caps take the damage. On a piece of equipment where a bound compartment door means a crew cannot reach a tool on scene, that is an operational issue and not a cosmetic one.

The other thing that brings apparatus to us is finish and lettering. Fire apparatus finish is a public-facing statement for a department, and departments care about it correctly. Southern California sun destroys clear coat and lifts lettering edges, especially on units housed in stations with apron parking rather than deep bays. We refinish apparatus, reproduce lettering and striping, and repair the aluminum body and compartments. We do not perform pump service, engine, drivetrain, or DOT inspection work, and we say so up front so a department knows what to schedule elsewhere.

Location: All work is performed at our Yorba Linda facility. We do not offer mobile, roadside, or fleet route service.

What actually fails, and why

Compartment roll-up door track binding

Tracks mounted to a flexing aluminum body go out of parallel from body flex or backing contact. The door binds, crews force it, and slats and end caps take the damage. On scene that becomes a crew unable to reach equipment.

Backing and tight-quarters impact damage

Apparatus back into stations, driveways, and incident scenes with limited visibility. Rear corners, tail boards, and compartment corners take the hits, and on an aluminum body that damage is sectioned and replaced rather than pulled.

Tank mounting and adjacent framing stress

Water surge loading works the tank mounting continuously. Brackets crack, and the compartment framing next to the tank distorts. It shows first as compartment doors near the tank that no longer fit, which is easy to misdiagnose as a door problem.

Ladder rack and equipment mount fatigue

Racks and mounts carry heavy equipment high on the body through hard response driving. Mounting welds crack at the flange ends, and a rack with play in it accelerates its own failure and damages the body it is mounted to.

Finish degradation and lettering edge lift

Sustained Southern California UV load breaks down clear coat and lifts lettering and striping edges, especially on units parked on an apron rather than in a deep bay. Once an edge lifts, the whole panel of lettering is on borrowed time.

Galvanic corrosion at dissimilar metal fasteners

Steel hardware in an aluminum body corrodes, and coastal department exposure accelerates it. The fastener swells, the surrounding aluminum lifts, and a compartment seal that looked fine becomes a water path into a tool compartment.

What does fire apparatus body repair cost?

Compartment door track correction and door repair runs $900 to $3,500 per compartment. Aluminum body section replacement after backing damage is $3,000 to $12,000. Full apparatus refinish with lettering and striping runs $18,000 to $60,000 and up. Body and paint labor is $210 per hour plus materials, and a paid estimate applies.

How long will the apparatus be out of service?

Compartment door and hardware work is two to five working days. Body section repair with refinish runs two to four weeks. A full repaint with lettering is six to twelve weeks. Departments should confirm reserve apparatus coverage before booking the heavy work, and we will schedule to your reserve availability rather than ours.

Do you service pumps, engines, or perform apparatus certification?

No. Pump service, engine, drivetrain, aerial certification, and DOT inspection work are all outside our scope. We do aluminum body repair, compartments, roll-up doors, hose bed and rack structure, emergency lighting install, corrosion treatment, lettering, striping, and refinish, all in-shop at our Yorba Linda facility. Findings that belong to a pump technician or a certified apparatus inspector are documented and handed back to the department.

Can you match our department color and reproduce our lettering?

Yes. We match to the actual apparatus under multiple light sources rather than to a code, because an engine that has been in service eight years has shifted. Lettering, striping, gold leaf effect work, and reflective marking are reproduced to your department standard, and we photograph the existing layout before removal so nothing is approximated.

How does purchasing work for a municipal department?

We estimate to your purchase order or procurement process and invoice against it. Estimates are paid and the collision estimate fee is refundable as a credit against an authorized repair. For departments with recurring work we set up account terms in advance so a deposit requirement does not delay an apparatus that needs to go back in service.
