The short answer
Reefer box repair restores the outer skin, foam core, and interior FRP liner on insulated bodies so the box holds temperature again. Work runs $1,000 to $18,000, or 8 to 80 hours at $210 per hour plus materials. Box and liner only, not refrigeration unit service.
01
What this work actually involves
An insulated body is a sandwich, and the middle of that sandwich is the entire point. Outer skin, closed-cell foam core, inner FRP liner. Once the outer skin is punctured or a seam opens, the foam takes on moisture, and wet foam does two things at once. It loses R-value, so the unit runs harder to hold setpoint, and it gains weight, so you lose payload on every run. A body that once held minus ten now sits at plus five with the unit running continuously, and the driver reports it as a refrigeration problem when the actual problem is a two-inch tear at the bottom rail from a forklift tine.
Southern California punishes these bodies from both ends. Low-desert heat through the Coachella Valley, Indio, Barstow, and out toward Blythe drives a brutal thermal load across the panel, so any lost insulation shows up as a temperature complaint within a week. Coastal salt out of the Long Beach and Carson drayage lanes attacks the aluminum skin and the steel fasteners in it, and galvanic corrosion at a rivet line opens the exact seam that lets moisture into the core. Both failures start small and neither one heals.
Interior liner damage is its own repair discipline because the box has to stay sanitary. A cracked FRP liner panel holds water and product residue in the fracture, and a patch bonded over the top of it traps that contamination rather than removing it. We cut the damaged liner back to sound material, remove and replace saturated foam, and rebond with a sanitary seam so the interior can actually be washed down. We repair the insulated box. Refrigeration unit service, engine, drivetrain, and DOT inspection work are not performed here.
Location: All work is performed at our Yorba Linda facility. We do not offer mobile, roadside, or fleet route service.
02
What the job includes
- Outer skin puncture, tear, and seam repair on aluminum and FRP insulated panels
- Saturated foam core removal and closed-cell replacement to original thickness
- Interior FRP liner panel replacement with sanitary bonded seams
- Bottom rail and scuff band repair where forklift tines have opened the panel
- Corner post and rear frame repair on insulated bodies
- Door frame and door panel core repair, including seal surface restoration
- Rivet line corrosion repair with isolated fasteners at dissimilar metal joints
- Roof panel repair and reseal after clearance strikes
- Curbside and rear door gasket and seal surface rework
- Refinish, seam sealing, and conspicuity tape reinstatement across the repair
03
When you need this service
- A box that no longer pulls down to setpoint with a refrigeration unit that tests fine
- A run time that has climbed steadily over a season with no other change
- A soft or spongy area on the outer skin when you press it with a flat hand
- Visible staining, bulging, or a wet line along the bottom rail
- A cracked or delaminated interior liner panel that holds water after washdown
- Frost or condensation forming on the outside of the box in a consistent spot
- Weeping white powder at a rivet line on a coastal-based unit
04
How we do it, step by step
- 01
Thermal and moisture survey
The panel is surveyed for wet core and cold spots before anything opens. Mapping the saturated area first is what keeps the repair from being reopened three feet further down.
- 02
Entry point identification
We trace the moisture back to the actual breach, usually a tine puncture, an opened seam, or a corroded rivet line. Replacing core without closing the entry is money spent twice.
- 03
Scope, price, and downtime plan
Documented findings priced by panel and by core area, with a return-to-service date. Insulated repairs cure on a schedule, so the date accounts for adhesive cure, not just labor.
- 04
Controlled opening and core removal
Skin or liner opened back to sound bond, saturated foam cut out entirely rather than dried in place. Wet foam that stays in the wall keeps consuming the panel around it.
- 05
Core replacement and rebond
Closed-cell foam installed to the original thickness so R-value actually returns, then the skin or liner rebonded with the correct adhesive under pressure and at controlled temperature.
- 06
Sanitary seam finishing
Interior seams finished so the box washes down clean with no fracture or void holding residue. A liner patch that traps product is a load rejection waiting to happen.
- 07
Seal, refinish, and verify
All penetrations resealed, the exterior refinished to fleet color, conspicuity tape and lettering reinstated, and the repaired panel re-surveyed for moisture before the unit is released.

Questions about reefer and insulated box skin and liner repair
Frequently asked questions
How much does reefer box repair cost?
Work runs $1,000 to $18,000, or 8 to 80 hours at $210 per hour plus materials. A single tine puncture with a contained core replacement and a liner patch sits at the low end. A full lower panel with eight feet of saturated core, liner replacement, and a rebuilt bottom rail sits at the high end. Deposits are 50 percent at authorization over $2,000.
How long is the unit down for insulated panel work?
Longer than a dry van, because adhesive cure is on the critical path. A contained puncture repair is three to five working days. A lower panel with core replacement and liner work runs seven to fourteen days. Large multi-panel jobs run three to five weeks. Rushing the cure produces a bond that fails in the first low-desert heat cycle, so we do not compress it.
My box will not hold temperature. Is that the body or the refrigeration unit?
Test the unit first. If it makes its capacity and the box still climbs, the problem is almost always wet core or a failed seal. Wet foam loses R-value and gains weight at the same time, so you see longer run times and lost payload together. We survey the panel for saturation and show you the mapped area before quoting any repair.
Do you service the refrigeration unit while the truck is here?
No. We repair the insulated box, the liner, the doors, and the finish. Refrigeration unit service, engine, drivetrain, and DOT inspection work are not performed at this facility. Bring the unit to us after your refrigeration vendor has confirmed the machine is making capacity, so the body repair is solving the actual problem.
Can a saturated panel just be dried out instead of replaced?
No. Closed-cell foam that has taken water does not dry back to spec inside a sealed panel, and any moisture left in the wall keeps degrading the bond and the surrounding core. The saturated section is cut out and replaced with new closed-cell material to the original thickness. Anything else returns as a temperature complaint within a season.
