The short answer

Refuse bodies fight corrosion from acidic leachate on top of packer stress, hopper impact, and thousands of arm or tailgate cycles a week. What we see on refuse and recycling trucks

Nothing on the road corrodes like a refuse body. The liquid that collects in the hopper and the packer area is acidic, it is warm, it stays in contact with the steel for the entire route, and it gets into every seam and weld. Add Southern California heat, which accelerates every chemical process involved, and add coastal salt on routes through the harbor cities and beach communities, and you have the most aggressive corrosion environment we deal with on any vehicle class. Body panels perforate from the inside out, which means by the time it is visible from outside the panel is finished.

The mechanical duty cycle sits on top of that. An automated side loader arm cycles a thousand times a day, and every cycle applies a load to a mounting structure attached to a body that is simultaneously being corroded. Rear loaders take direct impact into the hopper from every load and their tailgate hinges and seals cycle constantly. On both configurations, the failure is usually in the mounting structure or the seal geometry rather than in the mechanism, but it presents as a mechanism complaint, which sends it to the wrong shop first.

What a municipal fleet or a hauler needs from a body shop on these is honest assessment of remaining life. There is a point where a body has enough perforation that patching it is throwing labor at a unit that should be rebodied, and there is a point well before that where treatment and section replacement buy several more years cheaply. We tell you which one you have, in writing, with photographs. Welding and structural labor is $210 per hour, and we do not perform engine, drivetrain, hydraulic, or DOT inspection work.

What actually fails, and why

Hopper floor and lower body perforation

Leachate sits against the steel for the whole route and corrodes from the inside outward. By the time perforation is visible from outside, the surrounding panel is already thin, which is why patching a visible hole alone rarely holds.

Tailgate seal and hinge failure

Seals live in a contaminated path and get cycled constantly, so they take a set and stop sealing while the gate still latches normally. Leachate then trails on the road, which is a citation and a public complaint rather than a maintenance item.

Side loader arm mounting fatigue

A thousand cycles a day against mounting structure that is simultaneously corroding. Mounting welds crack at the flange ends, and because the arm still operates the crack is reported late, usually as a mechanism complaint.

Packer panel and wear plate erosion

Compaction drags abrasive material across the packer panel and body walls at high force every cycle. Wear plates thin unevenly, and once they are through, the structural panel behind them starts taking the abrasion directly.

Weld seam corrosion throughout the body

Weld seams are the first place leachate finds. Corrosion follows the heat affected zone along the seam, which means the failure runs as a line rather than a spot, and repairing it means addressing the whole seam not the visible section.

Cab and body corner impact from tight route access

Alley collection, narrow residential streets, and tight commercial approaches produce constant corner contact. Damage that would be cosmetic on another truck opens a coating breach here, which becomes a corrosion start point within weeks.

What does refuse body repair cost?

Hopper floor section replacement runs $3,000 to $12,000 depending on area and plate thickness. Tailgate hinge and seal geometry correction is $1,500 to $6,000. Arm mounting reinforcement runs $2,000 to $7,000. Welding and structural labor is $210 per hour plus materials, and a paid estimate is required before scheduling. Extent drives the number far more than the size of the visible hole does.

How long is the truck out of service?

Seal and hinge work is two to four working days. Hopper section replacement runs one to three weeks. Extensive corrosion remediation across multiple seams can run four to six weeks. Municipal fleets should plan this work rather than react to it, because an unplanned refuse truck outage means a route goes uncollected.

At what point is a refuse body not worth repairing?

When perforation has spread along multiple weld seams and the sound metal between them is thin enough that new welds have nothing to bite into. At that point sectioning becomes an endless project. We document extent with photographs and give you the honest comparison of repair cost against rebody or replacement so the decision runs on numbers.

Can coating actually slow the corrosion down?

Meaningfully, yes, when it is applied to properly prepared metal rather than sprayed over existing corrosion. Media prep back to sound steel, treatment, then a coating system rated for the chemistry buys years on a body that is still structurally sound. It does nothing on a body that already has perforation, and we will tell you which one you have.

Do you service the packer hydraulics or the engine?

No. Hydraulic, engine, drivetrain, and DOT inspection work are outside our scope. We repair the body, hopper, packer panels, tailgate structure and seal geometry, arm mounting structure, cab, and frame, and we handle corrosion treatment and coating. All work is performed in-shop at Yorba Linda. Corrosion findings adjacent to hydraulic components are documented so your mechanical provider knows what is behind them.
