The short answer
DOT conspicuity tape and compliance marking installs certified reflective sheeting and required lettering including USDOT numbers, unit numbers, and carrier identification. Work runs $250 to $1,200, or 1 to 6 hours at $210 per hour plus materials. Marking and lettering only, not DOT inspection.
01
What this work actually involves
Conspicuity marking is one of the cheapest compliance items on a commercial vehicle and one of the most commonly written up. The federal requirement calls for certified DOT-C2 grade retroreflective sheeting in two-inch width, alternating red and white, applied along the sides in a pattern covering at least half the trailer or body length, across the full width of the rear as low as practicable, and in white upper corner segments at the rear. Fleets lose points not because they never applied it, but because sections came off with a panel repair, a section faded past spec, or a body swap left the pattern broken.
Application is where cheap tape jobs go wrong. Reflective sheeting will not bond to a dirty, oxidized, or silicone-contaminated panel, and Southern California box trucks running Inland Empire distribution yards collect all three. Tape applied over road film in the morning is peeling at the leading edge by the end of the month, and once an edge lifts, the wash bay finishes the job. We clean and prep the substrate properly, apply at the right surface temperature, and roll the sheeting down so the adhesive actually wets out. On riveted and corrugated bodies, the tape has to be worked into the profile or it will bridge and tear.
Lettering is the other half. USDOT numbers must be legible from fifty feet in daylight and displayed in a color contrasting with the background, along with the legal carrier name. Unit numbers, GVWR markings, and any state or municipal identification go on at the same time. We cut and apply vinyl lettering to spec and record the layout so every unit in your fleet matches. To be explicit about scope: we install compliance marking and lettering. We do not perform DOT inspections, and engine and drivetrain work is not performed here either.
Systems and brands we work on: 3M, Avery Dennison.
Location: All work is performed at our Yorba Linda facility. We do not offer mobile, roadside, or fleet route service.

What the job includes
- Certified DOT-C2 grade two-inch red and white conspicuity sheeting installation
- Full side pattern application to the required percentage of body length
- Full-width rear application as low as practicable on the body or bumper
- White upper rear corner segment application
- Removal of failed, faded, or peeling existing tape and adhesive residue
- Substrate cleaning, decontamination, and prep so the sheeting actually bonds
- Corrugated and riveted panel application worked into the profile rather than bridged
- USDOT number and legal carrier name lettering to legibility and contrast spec
- Unit number, GVWR, and state or municipal identification lettering
- Tape and marking reinstatement across panels after body or collision repair

When you need this service
- Conspicuity tape lifting at the leading edge or peeling in sections
- Reflective sheeting that has faded, chalked, or lost return in the headlights
- A broken tape pattern where a panel was replaced and never re-marked
- A body swap or remount that left the marking pattern incomplete
- USDOT numbers too small, too low contrast, or partially removed
- A roadway inspection point or an internal audit finding on marking
- A newly repaired or repainted body with no marking reinstated
04
How we do it, step by step
- 01
Marking audit
Existing pattern measured against the requirement for that body type and length, with the specific gaps and failed sections photographed and listed before any material is ordered.
- 02
Removal of failed material
Peeling and faded sheeting removed along with all adhesive residue. New tape over old adhesive lifts within weeks, so removal is done properly rather than partially.
- 03
Substrate preparation
Panel washed, decontaminated, and wiped so no road film, oxidation, or silicone remains. This step is the difference between tape that lasts years and tape that lasts a month.
- 04
Layout and measurement
Pattern laid out to the required coverage along the sides, full width at the rear, and white segments at the upper rear corners, measured rather than estimated by eye.
- 05
Application and roll down
Certified sheeting applied at the correct surface temperature and rolled down so the adhesive wets out, worked into rivet lines and corrugation rather than bridged across.
- 06
Lettering installation
USDOT number, legal carrier name, unit number, and any required GVWR or agency markings cut and applied to the legibility and contrast requirement, then measured against it.
- 07
Documentation
Completed marking photographed on all sides and the layout recorded so every future unit in your fleet is marked identically and the file supports your compliance records.

Questions about dot reflective tape and compliance marking
Frequently asked questions
What does DOT reflective tape installation cost?
Work runs $250 to $1,200, or 1 to 6 hours at $210 per hour plus materials. A section repair after a panel replacement sits at the low end. A full strip and re-mark of a 26-foot body with old adhesive removal, both sides, the rear, corner segments, and fresh USDOT lettering sits at the high end. Materials are billed separately with 35 percent markup over $100.
How long does the unit have to be here?
Most conspicuity marking is a same-day job, usually two to five hours depending on body length and how much old adhesive has to come off. Removal is what stretches the time, since baked-on adhesive from ten-year-old tape takes longer to clean than the new material takes to apply. Send the unit clean and it moves faster.
Does this mean you can do our DOT inspections?
No. We install conspicuity tape, compliance marking, and lettering. We do not perform DOT inspections, and engine, drivetrain, or mechanical compliance work is not performed at this facility. Marking is a body and finish item and that is the part we handle. Your annual federal inspection stays with the vendor who does that for your fleet.
Which reflective tape do you use?
Certified DOT-C2 grade retroreflective sheeting from 3M and Avery Dennison, in two-inch red and white. Certified sheeting carries the DOT-C2 marking printed along the edge, which is what an inspector looks for. Uncertified reflective tape from a general supplier will not satisfy the requirement regardless of how bright it looks, and we do not install it on a commercial unit.
Our tape keeps peeling. Why?
Almost always surface prep. Reflective sheeting will not bond through road film, oxidation, wax, or silicone, and a body coming out of an Inland Empire distribution yard has all of it. Applying to a cold panel makes it worse, since the adhesive never wets out. We clean and decontaminate the substrate, apply in the right temperature range, and roll it down under pressure.
