Rivian R1S Repair
The short answer
The Rivian R1S shares the R1T skateboard platform in an enclosed three-row SUV body, which changes the structure behind the B-pillar entirely. Liftgate and rear structure damage, roof rack load issues, large glazing bonds, and pack-adjacent impact define the repair. Aluminum body work, structure, and calibration in Yorba Linda.

What we see on rivian r1s
The R1S sits on the same pack-as-structure platform as the R1T, but from the B-pillar back it is a completely different vehicle to repair. Where the truck has an open bed and a separate cab, the R1S is a single enclosed volume with a large bonded glass area, a full-length roof, and a powered liftgate at the rear. That means side and rear impact energy has a continuous structure to travel through, and it does. A rear quarter impact on an R1S regularly shows up as a liftgate that no longer closes evenly or a glass bond that has opened, well away from the visible damage.
Roof loading is a real consideration on these in Southern California specifically. Owners fit crossbars, cargo boxes, roof tents, and recovery gear, and then drive to the eastern Sierra, Joshua Tree, or the Mojave preserve on washboard surfaces. Dynamic roof load on corrugated dirt is many times static load, and it goes into rack feet mounted on a roof structure that also carries a large glass panel. We check rack mounting and the surrounding roof structure on any R1S that comes in with an overland setup, because a rack foot that has begun working is loading the glass bond next to it.
Everything about the pack, the aluminum body, and the calibration requirement carries over from the truck. Documented high voltage isolation before any hot work. Aluminum sectioned or replaced rather than pulled. Camera and radar recalibration after anything that changes mounting or ride height, at the $285 per hour diagnostic rate. Body and paint is $210 per hour. We do not service the pack, the drive units, or the powertrain, and we do not perform DOT inspection work. All work is in-shop at Yorba Linda.
Location: All work is performed at our Yorba Linda facility. We do not offer mobile, roadside, or fleet route service.

What makes this vehicle different
- Same structural battery pack platform as the R1T in an enclosed three-row body
- Continuous enclosed structure from front to rear, so impact energy travels farther than the damage suggests
- Large bonded glazing including a full glass roof panel, sensitive to any body distortion
- Powered liftgate whose fit directly reports rear structure geometry
- Roof rack mounting adjacent to bonded glass, taking dynamic load on washboard surfaces
- Aluminum-intensive body requiring section and replace rather than pull and finish
- Camera and radar suite referenced to adjustable air suspension ride height

What actually fails, and why
Rear quarter impact reported at the liftgate
On a continuous enclosed body, quarter panel impact distorts the rear aperture. The liftgate stops closing evenly or the powered mechanism strains, which is the symptom owners report while the actual damage sits several feet forward.
Glass bond line separation after body distortion
Large bonded glazing depends on the surrounding structure staying true. Body distortion opens the bond at a corner, and the resulting water path shows up in a headliner or a pillar trim rather than at the glass edge.
Roof rack foot working under dynamic load
Cargo boxes and roof tents on washboard dirt apply many times their static load. Rack feet work in their mounting, the roof structure deflects, and the load transfers to the glass panel bond immediately adjacent to it.
Underbody and rocker impact over the pack
Trail use and unpaved access roads strike the lower body directly over the structural pack. Documented isolation and enclosure inspection precede any repair planning, because a structural pack is not something to assess by looking at it.
Aluminum panel damage requiring section or replacement
Aluminum work hardens and has minimal elastic memory. What would be a routine push on a steel SUV is a repairable section or a panel replacement here, and a conventional pull produces a stress area that fails later at the worst place.
Calibration loss after suspension or fascia work
Sensor aim is referenced to a body on adjustable air suspension. Ride height changes, fascia work, and windshield replacement all invalidate it, and the system usually stays quiet about being wrong rather than setting a fault.

Questions about rivian r1s
Frequently asked questions
What does R1S collision repair cost?
Aluminum panel replacement with refinish runs $2,800 to $9,000 per panel. Rear aperture correction with liftgate work is $5,000 to $15,000. Anything involving the pack area starts around $8,000 and rises with extent. Body and paint is $210 per hour, calibration $285 per hour, plus materials and a paid collision estimate.
My liftgate stopped closing right after a minor rear hit. Is that serious?
It is worth taking seriously. On an enclosed unibody structure the liftgate fit is one of the most sensitive indicators of rear aperture geometry, and a gate that no longer closes evenly usually means the opening has moved. We measure the aperture against design before touching the gate or its mechanism, because adjusting the gate to a distorted opening hides a structural condition.
How long will the repair take?
Panel replacement with refinish and calibration runs two to four weeks. Structural correction is six to twelve weeks, driven mostly by parts lead time and carrier supplement approval. We schedule after disassembly. If you need an accurate date for a rental or a loaner arrangement, that is the point at which we can give you one.
Can I keep my roof rack and cargo setup through the repair?
We remove it for access and reinstall it, and we inspect the mounting while it is off, which is worth doing. Rack feet that have been working under dynamic load on washboard surfaces are frequently loading the glass bond next to them, and that is a finding you want before it becomes a leak rather than after.
Do you service the battery, motors, or perform inspections?
No. We perform documented high voltage isolation for safe body work and we inspect and document enclosure condition. Battery, drive unit, and powertrain service is outside our scope, as is DOT inspection work. Body, structure, panels, glazing, refinish, calibration, and suspension are the scope, all in-shop at Yorba Linda. We document enclosure condition photographically for your file and your carrier.
