The short answer

Tongue and coupler repair covers bent A-frames, worn couplers, failed tongue jacks, and safety chain mount replacement on trailers and towables. Work runs $250 to $1,500, or 1 to 6 hours at $260 per hour plus parts, with certified in-shop welding included.

01

What this work actually involves

The tongue takes more abuse than any other part of a trailer frame, and most of the damage is self-inflicted. Jackknifing while backing bends the A-frame or crushes a member against the tow vehicle bumper. Dropping the trailer on its jack with the coupler still latched bends the tongue downward. Both are common, both are repairable, and both need a measured correction rather than a heat-and-pull, because a work-hardened A-frame member becomes the next crack.

Couplers wear at the latch and the ball socket, and the wear is progressive and quiet. A coupler that has ovaled will still latch and will still feel connected in the driveway, but it develops fore and aft play that shows up as chucking at highway speed and, in the worst case, as a coupler that walks off the ball over a sharp dip. We gauge the socket rather than judging by feel, and we replace couplers instead of shimming them.

Safety chain mounts get overlooked entirely until they matter. On older trailers the chain loops are frequently welded to a thin gusset that has corroded, particularly on coastal trailers and anything launched at a ramp. Chain rating also matters: the pair of chains must be rated for the trailer gross weight, and an owner who upgraded a coupler without upgrading the chains has a mismatched setup. We check the mount, the weld, the hook, and the rating as one item, and we fabricate new mounts where the original is compromised.

Systems and brands we work on: Dexter, AL-KO, Curt, Lippert.

Location: All work is performed at our Yorba Linda facility. We do not offer mobile, roadside, or fleet route service.

What the job includes

  • Bent A-frame and tongue member measurement and controlled straightening
  • Tongue section replacement where the member is beyond correction
  • Coupler socket gauging and complete coupler replacement
  • Adjustable and weight distribution coupler installation
  • Tongue jack replacement in manual, electric, and swing-away styles
  • Jack mounting plate and bracket repair or fabrication
  • Safety chain mount inspection, weld repair, and new loop fabrication
  • Chain and hook rating verification against trailer gross weight
  • Breakaway switch mounting and cable routing at the tongue
  • Corrosion treatment and coating of all repaired tongue structure

03

When you need this service

  • A visible bend, twist, or kink in an A-frame member
  • A coupler that latches loosely or that rattles on the ball
  • Fore and aft chucking felt through the tow vehicle at speed
  • A tongue jack that will not raise the trailer or that binds partway
  • A jack mounting plate that has torn, bent, or pulled at its welds
  • Rusted, cracked, or missing safety chain loops
  • Chains sized or rated below the trailer gross weight

How we do it, step by step

  1. 01

    Tongue measurement

A-frame members measured against the designed geometry rather than sighted by eye, so any correction has a target number instead of an opinion.

  2. 02

    Coupler gauging

Socket gauged against the ball size specification. A coupler that feels connected in the driveway can still be ovaled well past its service limit.

  3. 03

    Weld and corrosion survey

Every weld at the tongue, jack plate, and chain mounts cleaned and inspected. Coastal and boat-ramp trailers hide serious corrosion under intact-looking paint.

  4. 04

    Documented findings

Photographed findings priced, with the difference between straightening and section replacement shown explicitly so the decision is yours on real numbers.

  5. 05

    Controlled correction

Bent members corrected in stages with measurement between passes. Forcing a correction in one pull work-hardens the steel and creates the next failure point.

  6. 06

    Welding and component replacement

Certified welding for section replacement, chain mounts, and jack plates, then new coupler, jack, and hardware installed to specification.

  7. 07

    Coat and verify

Repaired structure treated and coated, then the trailer coupled and uncoupled to confirm latch engagement and jack operation through full travel.

Questions about tongue, coupler and safety chain repair

Frequently asked questions

How much does trailer tongue and coupler repair cost?

This work runs $250 to $1,500, or 1 to 6 hours at $260 per hour plus parts. Replacing a coupler or a tongue jack sits near the low end. Straightening a bent A-frame, replacing a section, fabricating new safety chain mounts, and coating the repaired structure sits at the high end. Larger frame damage moves into frame and structural repair.

Can a bent trailer tongue be straightened?

Often yes, when the deflection is moderate and the member has not been previously heated or work-hardened. We measure against the designed geometry and correct in stages with measurement between passes. Where the member is kinked or already cracked, section replacement by certified welding is the correct repair, and we price both so you can compare.

How do I know if my coupler is worn out?

Gauge it. A worn coupler still latches and still feels fine at walking pace, which is why owners miss it. The symptom on the road is fore and aft chucking that people attribute to the tow vehicle. We gauge the socket against the ball specification, and if it is past its limit we replace it rather than trying to take up the slack with adjustment.

Do safety chains need to match my trailer weight?

Yes. The chain pair must be rated for the trailer gross weight, and the mounts and hooks have to match. We see plenty of trailers where a coupler or an axle was upgraded and the chains were never revisited, leaving a rated connection with an unrated backup. We check mount, weld, hook, and rating together and fabricate new mounts where the originals are corroded.
