Travel Trailers Repair

The short answer

A travel trailer tows from a ball hitch behind the tow vehicle rear axle on an A-frame tongue, which makes it the most sway-prone RV on the road. Tongue welds, sidewall construction type, and axle condition define its repairs. We rebuild frames, walls, and running gear in Yorba Linda.

What we see on travel trailers

The A-frame tongue is where a travel trailer differs from everything else. Tongue weight is carried at a ball behind the tow vehicle rear axle, which puts the trailer in a position to push the back of the tow vehicle sideways during a crosswind or a passing truck. That geometry is why sway control and weight distribution exist, and it is also why the tongue structure sees loads that a fifth wheel pin box never sees. Weight distribution bars apply substantial upward force to the A-frame at their attachment brackets, and we regularly find cracked welds and deformed A-frame members at those bracket locations on trailers that have never been in an accident.

Construction type then determines everything downstream. A stick-and-tin trailer uses aluminum framing with fiberglass insulation and a corrugated aluminum skin fastened over it, so the framing carries the load and the skin is a weather barrier. A laminated trailer bonds fiberglass skin to foam and substrate to form a structural panel, so the panel is the structure. Those two fail in completely different ways. Stick-and-tin fails at fastener lines and at framing joints and can usually be repaired in sections. Laminated fails by debonding, and a laminated wall with separation running behind sound-looking skin cannot be repaired by working on the skin alone.

Southern California use puts trailers on two hard roads. The 15 through Cajon and out toward Barstow subjects the suspension to sustained load and heat, and the equalizer and hanger assemblies on tandem leaf spring axles are where that shows. The 18 and the 38 up to Big Bear Lake put long descents on electric brakes and bearings that most owners service on a mileage schedule rather than on a duty schedule. Meanwhile the trailer sits between trips in whatever storage is available, and uncovered inland valley or desert storage cooks the roof sealant and lifts the decal edges on the sun side.

What actually fails, and why

A-frame cracking at weight distribution bracket mounts

Weight distribution bars apply substantial upward force at their brackets. Welds crack and A-frame members deform at those points, and because the area sits under the propane cover it goes unnoticed until the coupler starts sitting at an angle.

Fastener line leakage on stick-and-tin construction

Screwed aluminum skin relies on sealant at every fastener and seam. Inland valley heat cycling works the sealant loose at the edges, and water enters at a screw line and travels inside the wall to the floor without any visible exterior sign.

Laminated sidewall debonding behind intact skin

On laminated construction the panel is the structure. Adhesive failure from desert heat or moisture at a seam separates skin from core over a large area while the exterior still looks fine, and only tap testing reveals the real extent.

Equalizer, hanger, and spring failure on tandem axles

Sustained loading on the 15 toward Barstow wears equalizer bushings and cracks hangers at the frame weld. It shows as uneven tire wear on a trailer that tracks straight, which owners usually attribute to alignment.

Brake and bearing wear from grade descents

Long descents on the 18 and the 38 heat drums and hubs far beyond what mileage suggests. Magnets wear, shoes glaze, and bearings lose their grease film. Servicing on a mileage schedule rather than a duty schedule is how most failures start.

Between trips the trailer sits, and uncovered inland valley or desert storage bakes the lap sealant at every roof penetration while UV lifts decal edges on the sun side. Wind then gets under the lifted edge and takes the graphic.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether my trailer is stick-and-tin or laminated?

Look at the exterior. Corrugated or ribbed aluminum skin means stick-and-tin, with framing carrying the load. Smooth fiberglass sidewalls mean laminated construction, where the bonded panel is the structure. It matters because the repair approach is completely different, and it determines whether a damaged section can be repaired in place or has to be rebuilt.

What does travel trailer axle and brake service cost?

A full service on a tandem axle trailer including bearing repack, brake inspection and adjustment, and magnet replacement typically runs several hundred to a low four figure amount depending on what is worn. Mechanical labor is $260 per hour. Equalizer and hanger repair with welding is quoted separately after the underside is inspected.

My tires wear unevenly but the trailer tows straight. Why?

That is the classic suspension symptom on a tandem axle trailer. Worn equalizer bushings or a cracked hanger let one axle sit slightly out of position, so the tires scrub without the trailer visibly pulling. We inspect the hangers, equalizers, and shackles, and check axle alignment before recommending anything about tires.

Is delamination covered by insurance?

Only where it results from a covered event such as an impact or a hail strike that started the separation. Heat and age driven debonding is normally excluded as deterioration. We document the initiating damage and the extent of separation together during disassembly, because whether there is an identifiable event is the entire question for the adjuster.

How often should roof sealant be redone here?

More often than the manufacturer interval suggests, especially with uncovered storage. In the inland valleys and the desert, heat cycling works lap sealant loose at the edges years earlier than the schedule assumes. Plan on a full roof inspection annually and a reseal before the first storm cycle in late fall rather than after.
