The short answer

What this work actually involves

Disc brakes on trailers and van chassis fail differently than drum brakes, and the failure that dominates in Southern California is caliper seizure from corrosion. Coastal salt film gets into the slide pins and the piston boot, the pin binds, and the caliper stops releasing fully. From there the inboard pad wears at twice the rate of the outboard, the rotor gets a heat-checked surface, and the wheel runs hot enough to cook a bearing. We check pad thickness inboard and outboard separately for exactly this reason, because equal wear and unequal wear point at completely different repairs.

Rotor measurement is the other thing that gets skipped elsewhere. A rotor has a minimum thickness stamped on the hat and a runout specification, and a rotor that is within thickness can still be out of specification for lateral runout, which is what you feel as pulsation. Turning a rotor that is already near minimum to remove runout buys a few thousand miles of quieter braking and then fades badly on the first sustained descent. We measure both and tell you which you have.

Hydraulic condition matters more on vehicles that sit. A fleet van that runs daily flushes its own fluid through use. An RV or a trailer that sits eleven months a year accumulates moisture in the fluid, which lowers the boiling point and corrodes the caliper bore from the inside. On any unit that has sat, we test the fluid rather than assume, because brake fade on the 15 coming off the Cajon Pass is not the place to discover that the fluid absorbed water in storage.

    Road and static assessment

    Brakes evaluated for pull, pulsation, and noise, then each wheel pulled so pad and rotor condition can be measured instead of estimated through the wheel.

    Measurement against specification

    Pad thickness taken inboard and outboard separately, rotor thickness and lateral runout measured, and the numbers compared against the published limits.

    Caliper and hardware inspection

    Slide pins worked, boots inspected, and piston retraction checked. Uneven pad wear is a caliper finding until proven otherwise, particularly on coastal units.

    Fluid condition test

    Fluid tested for moisture content, which matters most on vehicles that sit for long periods between use rather than on daily drivers.

    Measurements photographed and priced per corner so you approve specific work rather than a blanket four-wheel job you may not need.

    Service and replacement

    Pads, rotors, hardware, and calipers replaced as measured, slide surfaces cleaned and lubricated correctly, and fluid exchanged where the test calls for it.

    Bed-in and verification

    Brakes bedded to the pad manufacturer procedure and the vehicle checked for even braking and normal hub temperature before delivery.

How much does disc brake service cost?

Disc brake work runs $350 to $2,500, or 1 to 10 hours at $260 per hour plus parts. Pads and rotors at one axle sits near the low end. Pads, rotors, both calipers, hoses, and a full fluid exchange across two axles on a heavy van chassis sits at the high end. Parts are billed at markup, 35 percent over $100.

Why is my inboard pad worn out and the outboard one fine?

A seized or dragging caliper. The slide pins have bound, usually from corrosion, so the caliper is not releasing and the inboard pad carries the load continuously. Coastal Southern California accelerates this badly. Replacing pads without servicing or replacing the caliper puts you right back in the same place in a few thousand miles.

Should rotors be turned or replaced?

It depends on measured thickness. A rotor with plenty of material above minimum and a small runout error can be turned. A rotor already near minimum should be replaced, because turning it further leaves too little mass to absorb heat and it will fade on the first long descent. We give you the actual measurement and the limit.

My RV sat for two years. Does the brake fluid need attention?

Very likely. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and corrodes caliper bores from the inside. A vehicle that sits does not flush itself through use the way a daily driver does. We test moisture content rather than guessing, and the test takes minutes.
