What this work actually involves

Electric drum brakes fail in a predictable order and most owners catch them late. The magnet wears first, losing its face and its amperage draw, so braking effort quietly drops until the tow vehicle is doing nearly all the work. Then a magnet wire chafes through at the backing plate and that wheel stops braking entirely, which shows up as a pull under braking. Then the shoes glaze from being asked to do too little too hot. We measure magnet current draw at each wheel rather than judging by feel, because a system that stops the trailer adequately on flat ground can still be seriously unbalanced.

Grade is what exposes the deficiency in Southern California. Descending from Big Bear Lake or coming down the 15 off the Cajon Pass puts sustained heat into trailer drums for miles at a time. A drum that is out of round or a set of shoes that is glazed will fade, and the driver interprets that as the controller needing more gain, which puts more heat in and makes it worse. Any trailer that regularly runs mountain grade needs its brakes measured, not just adjusted.

Surge brakes on rental and utility trailers and electric-over-hydraulic systems on heavier fifth wheels each bring their own failure set. Surge actuators seize at the master cylinder and the shock, particularly on units that have been dunked at a boat ramp, and the trailer either brakes constantly or not at all. Electric-over-hydraulic actuators fail electrically far more often than hydraulically, which means the diagnosis starts at the connector and the ground, not at the caliper.

How we do it, step by step

  1. 01

    Controller and circuit test

    Output measured at the connector and at each wheel under commanded braking. A weak circuit or a bad ground mimics worn brakes and costs nothing to rule out first.

  2. 02

    Magnet draw measurement

    Current draw measured at each magnet and compared wheel to wheel. This is what reveals an unbalanced system that still feels adequate on flat ground.

  3. 03

    Drum pull and measurement

    Drums pulled, inside diameter measured for out-of-round and maximum wear, and shoe surfaces inspected for glazing and heat checking.

  4. 04

    Documented findings

    Measurements photographed and priced by wheel, so you can see which axle is actually the problem rather than approving a blanket replacement.

    Component replacement

    Magnets, shoes, springs, adjusters, or complete backing plates replaced, and drums replaced when measurement exceeds the wear limit rather than turned thin.

    Wiring and breakaway correction

    Chafed magnet wires rerouted and protected, grounds cleaned to bare metal, and the breakaway switch and battery tested under actual applied load.

  7. 07

    Adjustment and balance verification

    Brakes adjusted, current draw rechecked across all wheels, and the trailer stopped under controller command to confirm even braking before delivery.

How often should trailer brakes be inspected?

At least annually, and before any trip that involves sustained mountain grade. Magnets and shoes wear gradually enough that you compensate at the controller without noticing, so the deficiency only becomes obvious on a long descent when you need everything the system has. Measurement is the only reliable way to catch it early.

Why does my trailer pull to one side when braking?

Almost always one wheel not contributing while the others do. The usual causes are a chafed magnet wire at the backing plate, a corroded ground, a seized adjuster, or a magnet worn past its friction face. We measure current draw at each wheel under commanded braking, which identifies the dead one in minutes rather than pulling every drum on a guess. The wire chafe version is the most common and the least expensive to correct.

Do you service surge brakes?

Yes. Surge coupler actuators, master cylinders, and dampers are all serviced here, along with the drum or disc hardware behind them. Trailers that have been backed into salt water at a boat ramp are the common problem case, since the actuator internals corrode and the trailer ends up either dragging its brakes or not braking at all.

Is this the same as vehicle brake work?

It overlaps but is not identical. We service brake, axle, bearing, and suspension systems on trailers and van chassis. We do not perform engine, drivetrain, or transmission work, and we do not perform DOT inspections. If your repair needs falls outside that scope we will say so directly rather than book the vehicle in.
