The short answer

Axle service covers bent axle diagnosis, camber and toe measurement, spindle repair, and complete axle replacement on trailers and towables. Work runs $500 to $5,500, or 3 to 22 hours at $260 per hour plus parts. Dexter and AL-KO axles supplied and installed.

01

What this work actually involves

Trailer axles are built with a designed camber, a slight upward bow that flattens under rated load so the tire sits square on the road. Overload them, curb them hard, or drop one into a pothole on the 10 outside Indio at 65 miles per hour and that bow changes permanently. The result is a tire wearing on one edge and an owner who keeps replacing tires without ever finding out why. We measure camber and toe at the spindle rather than judging by eye, because a bent axle frequently looks perfectly straight.

Spindle damage is the other common finding, and it usually comes from a bearing failure that was allowed to run. Once a bearing seizes, it takes the spindle surface with it in a matter of miles, and no amount of new bearing will restore the fit. Depending on the axle, that means either a spindle replacement welded and machined to the tube or a complete axle. We will tell you which, with the price difference, rather than defaulting to the more expensive answer.

On replacement we spec the axle to what the trailer actually carries now, not what the factory assumed. Toy haulers, overland builds, and utility trailers get modified constantly, and the axle that was correct for a 5,000 pound gross weight is not correct after a 900 pound generator, a water tank, and a steel deck have been added. Capacity, hub bolt pattern, brake type, and track width all get confirmed before an axle is ordered, because getting one of those wrong turns a two day job into a six week one.

Systems and brands we work on: Dexter, AL-KO, Lippert.

Location: All work is performed at our Yorba Linda facility. We do not offer mobile, roadside, or fleet route service.

02

What the job includes

  • Camber and toe measurement at the spindle on each axle
  • Bent axle diagnosis and straightening where the tube is within tolerance
  • Complete axle replacement in matched capacity, track width, and bolt pattern
  • Spindle replacement and machining where bearing failure damaged the surface
  • Axle alignment to the coupler centerline on tandem and triple configurations
  • Hanger, U-bolt, and tie plate replacement during axle work
  • Brake flange and backing plate transfer or replacement on the new axle
  • Hub, drum, bearing, and seal installation on replacement axles
  • Capacity review against the trailer actual loaded weight
  • Corrosion treatment and coating of the axle tube and mounting hardware

03

When you need this service

  • Tire wear concentrated on one edge across multiple tire replacements
  • A visible lean or tilt to one wheel when viewed from behind
  • A trailer that dog tracks, following slightly offset from the tow vehicle
  • Scoring, bluing, or galling visible on a spindle when a hub is pulled
  • A wheel that will no longer hold a bearing preload adjustment
  • A hard curb strike, pothole impact, or overload event followed by new tire wear
  • Uneven fender gaps side to side on the same axle

04

How we do it, step by step

  1. 01

    Measurement before diagnosis

Camber and toe measured at each spindle and axle spacing checked against the coupler centerline. A bent axle rarely looks bent, so the number decides this.

  2. 02

    Hub pull and spindle inspection

Hubs pulled and spindle surfaces inspected for scoring and bluing. Heat discoloration means a bearing ran hot, and that history changes the repair plan.

  3. 03

    Repair versus replace assessment

Straightening, spindle replacement, and complete axle replacement priced side by side with the measured deviation shown, so the decision is made on data.

  4. 04

    Capacity and specification review

Actual loaded weight compared against axle rating, and bolt pattern, track width, and brake type confirmed before any replacement axle is ordered.

  5. 05

    Removal and mounting inspection

Axle removed and the hangers, U-bolts, and spring perches inspected. Worn mounting hardware reused under a new axle simply relocates the problem.

  6. 06

    Installation and alignment

Axle installed, torqued to specification, and aligned for parallelism and toe against the coupler centerline before brakes and hubs go back on.

  7. 07

    Bearing set and verification

Bearings packed and preloaded, brakes adjusted, and the trailer rolled and re-checked for tracking and hub temperature before delivery.

Questions about axle service and replacement

Frequently asked questions

How much does a trailer axle replacement cost?

Axle work runs $500 to $5,500, or 3 to 22 hours at $260 per hour plus parts. Measuring and correcting alignment on an existing axle sits near the low end. Replacing both axles on a tandem with electric brakes, new hubs, bearings, U-bolts, and a full alignment sits at the high end. Axles are billed at parts markup, 35 percent over $100.

How do I know if my trailer axle is bent?

Persistent one-edge tire wear that survives new tires is the reliable indicator. A bent axle usually looks straight, because the deflection is small and the tube is long. We measure camber and toe at the spindle against the axle specification, which turns it from an opinion into a number you can act on.

Can a bent axle be straightened, or does it need replacing?

It depends on how far it has gone and whether the tube has been heat damaged. Small deviations in a sound tube can often be corrected. Once the deflection is large, or once a spindle has been damaged by a failed bearing, replacement is the better economic call. We show you the measured deviation and price both paths.

Do I need to upgrade axle capacity if I have added weight?

Frequently, yes. Toy haulers and utility trailers get modified heavily, and generators, water tanks, and steel decking add up fast. We weigh the trailer loaded the way you actually use it and compare it against the axle rating. Running an axle above its rating is what turns a bearing failure into a spindle replacement.

Do you supply Dexter and AL-KO axles?

Yes, both, plus the associated hub, brake, and bearing components. Which one goes under your trailer depends on the original specification, the brake type, and what is actually available in your capacity and track width. Lead time varies considerably, so we confirm the full specification before ordering rather than after.
