What this work actually involves

Step height is a real workplace issue on fleet vans. A driver making 120 stops a day out of a high roof Sprinter or a Transit is stepping down 20 inches or more every time, and that repetition drives ankle and knee complaints and lost days. A properly mounted running board cuts the effective step height roughly in half. The install detail that matters is the mounting bracket: factory brackets bolt to specific captive nuts in the rocker, and a board hung off self-tapping screws into thin sheet will loosen and elongate its holes inside a year of daily use.

Powered retractable steps are the popular option on personal vehicles and they add complexity worth understanding. They deploy on door open, they draw current, and they live in the road spray path with a motor and a linkage. In coastal Southern California the corrosion clock on a powered step is measurably shorter than on a fixed board, and grit from high desert wind gets into the same pivots. They are a good product installed correctly, but the maintenance is real and we tell owners so before they buy.

On overland and expedition builds the requirement is different again. A rock rail is a structural member that has to tie into the frame or the pinch weld with reinforcement, because its job is to carry the weight of the vehicle when it lands on a rock, not to help someone step in. We fabricate the mounting where a bolt-on kit does not fit the chassis, and we weld to the frame by certified procedure rather than clamping to a rocker panel that will fold.

How we do it, step by step

  1. 01

    Application review

    We work out what the step actually has to do, daily driver entry, high-cycle fleet use, or structural rock protection, because those call for very different hardware.

  2. 02

    Mounting point survey

    Factory captive nuts, frame rails, and pinch weld condition inspected before anything is ordered. Corrosion at the mounting points changes the install plan.

  3. 03

    Bracket fit or fabrication

    Manufacturer brackets used where they align. Where they do not, we fabricate brackets and backing plates so load goes into structure rather than into thin sheet.

  4. 04

    Installation and torque

    Boards or bars mounted level to the vehicle and torqued to specification, with dissimilar-metal fasteners isolated so galvanic corrosion does not start at the bolt.

  5. 05

    Electrical for powered units

    Powered step controllers wired to a fused circuit with door triggers verified, and harnesses routed clear of suspension travel and exhaust heat.

  6. 06

    Structural welding where required

    Rock rails and heavy-duty applications welded to the frame by certified procedure with reinforcement, rather than clamped to a rocker that will fold under load.

  7. 07

    Load test and documentation

    Step loaded and checked for deflection and movement, and the configuration documented so it can be replicated exactly across a fleet.

Understand the tradeoff: they have a motor and a linkage living in the road spray path, and in coastal Southern California that means a real maintenance interval. A fixed board has nothing to fail. We install both and we will tell you honestly which suits your use.

Can you outfit a whole fleet the same way?

Yes. Once the first vehicle is configured and approved, we document the bracket positions and hardware and replicate it exactly across the remaining vehicles, scheduling in batches so you do not lose the fleet at once. Everything is done at our Yorba Linda facility. We do not offer on-site or route service.

Will drilling into my van cause rust?

Not if the install is done properly. Every drilled hole gets deburred, treated, and sealed, and dissimilar-metal fasteners get isolation so galvanic corrosion does not start at the bolt. On coastal vehicles that detail is the difference between a mount that lasts the life of the van and one that blooms rust through the paint within two years.
