What this work actually involves

An RV roof is decking over rafters, not a load-bearing plate, so where a rack or ladder lands matters more than what the hardware is rated for. Fastening into 3/8 inch luan between rafters gives you a mount that holds until the first freeway expansion joint, then works loose and becomes a leak. Every mount we install lands on a rafter, on factory blocking, or on blocking we add, and where the wall or ceiling has to be opened to verify what is behind it, we open it. That verification is most of the labor on a job like this and it is not optional.

Sealing is the other half. Every fastener through a roof is a hole through the membrane into decking, and a screw driven through EPDM with a bead of sealant on top of it is a leak with a delay. We bed the mounting foot on butyl, drive the fastener to seat without crushing the membrane, then dress the perimeter and every head with self-leveling lap sealant. On camper van conversions with a painted steel roof, the sequence is different again, since bare steel at a drilled hole in coastal Oceanside or Long Beach air starts corroding within weeks unless the hole is treated.

Load direction is worth thinking about before drilling. A rear ladder on a fiberglass cap carries mostly vertical load but the top mounts see prying force every time someone climbs, and vintage caps in particular crack at those upper mounts. Overland and expedition builds add roof decks, awning rails, recovery boards, and solar, which stack both weight and wind load high on a vehicle that already handles poorly in a crosswind. We ask what is actually going on the rack, because a rack sized for two paddleboards is not a rack sized for a rooftop tent and four people.

How we do it, step by step

  1. 01

    Load and use interview

    What is going on the rack, how much it weighs, and how the vehicle is used. A rack for paddleboards and a rack for a rooftop tent are different structural problems.

  2. 02

    Structure location

    Rafters and factory blocking located from above and confirmed from inside where access allows. Nothing is drilled based on a measurement from a brochure.

  3. 03

    Blocking and backing preparation

    Where no structure exists at the required mounting point, blocking is added or backing plates are installed so the load spreads across the deck instead of into it.

  4. 04

    Layout and dry fit

    Hardware laid out and dry fitted so foot spacing lands on structure and the finished position clears vents, AC units, and the awning through its full travel.

  5. 05

    Drilling and hole treatment

    Holes drilled clean, and on steel or aluminum roofs the bare edge is treated before anything goes over it. An untreated hole in coastal air corrodes within weeks.

  6. 06

    Mounting and sealing

    Feet bedded on butyl, fasteners driven to seat without crushing the membrane, then perimeters and fastener heads dressed with self-leveling lap sealant.

  7. 07

    Load check and water test

    Every mount is load checked and the whole installation is water tested, with the interior verified dry below each penetration before delivery.

Not when it is done correctly. The failure mode is always sealant applied on top of a fastener instead of the foot being bedded on butyl underneath. We bed every mounting foot, seat the fastener without crushing the membrane, seal the perimeter and heads with self-leveling lap sealant, and water test the installation before the unit leaves.

Can you add a rack to a roof that has no blocking?

Yes, and it is common on lightweight trailers and older coaches. We fabricate and install blocking between the rafters, or fit backing plates that spread the load across the deck where the ceiling cannot be opened. Mounting into unsupported decking is the one approach we will not do, because it works loose and becomes a leak.

How much weight can my RV roof carry?

It varies enormously by construction, and the honest answer requires looking at your rafter spacing and material. Many travel trailer roofs are not rated for foot traffic at all, while a Class A with steel tube framing carries considerably more. We work to the vehicle manufacturer figure where one exists and design the mounting to spread load where it does not.
