What this work actually involves

A perfect color formula is not a match. Paint changes as it is applied, and it changes again as it ages on the vehicle. Two coaches that left the factory the same week can read a full shade apart after five years, one parked in a covered lot in Riverside and one sitting in the open in Palmdale. Metallics compound this, because flake orientation depends on gun setup, air pressure, and film thickness. Spray the mixed formula edge to edge against an aged panel and you will see the line from thirty feet in raking afternoon light.

Blending solves it by refusing to put a hard edge anywhere the eye can find one. Color is carried out into the adjacent panel or across an open expanse of sidewall, decreasing in coverage, and then the entire blend zone is cleared as one. On a car that means blending into a door. On a forty-foot fifth wheel with no vertical break between the front cap and the rear, it means establishing the blend across a large flat field and clearing the whole side to the next natural termination. That is why blend work on RVs consumes more hours than people expect.

We start with a spectrophotometer reading off the actual panel, not the paint code, then spray letdown cards at three coverage levels and check them against the coach outdoors as well as under booth light. Metamerism is real: a match that reads perfect under 5000K shop lighting can be visibly green in San Diego afternoon sun. The card gets approved outdoors before we mix a full batch.

How we do it, step by step

  1. 01

    Clean and polish the reference area

    The panel is washed, decontaminated, and lightly polished before reading. Reading a chalked surface produces a formula that matches the oxidation, not the paint.

  2. 02

    Read and pull candidates

    Spectrophotometer reading taken at multiple points, then compared against the factory formula and every released variant to pick the closest starting point.

  3. 03

    Spray and evaluate letdown cards

    Cards sprayed at varying coverage and checked against the coach under booth light and outdoors. Metallics are evaluated at multiple viewing angles for flake orientation.

  4. 04

    Tint to final

    Where the closest variant is still off, the formula is tinted by hand and re-carded. This step is what separates a match from a formula.

  5. 05

    Map the blend zone

    We determine how far the color has to travel to reach a point where the transition is invisible, then mask to that point rather than to the nearest convenient seam.

  6. 06

    Spray and clear as one

    Color blended out with decreasing coverage, then clear applied across the whole zone in one continuous film so there is no clear edge sitting in the middle of a panel.

  7. 07

    Level and verify

    Blend area color sanded, compounded, and polished, then checked outdoors at multiple angles before the unit is released.

Why can you not just use my paint code?

Because the code describes what left the factory, not what is on your coach today. Five years of Southern California UV shifts most colors measurably, and manufacturers routinely released two or three factory variants under one code. We read the actual panel, compare against the variants, and tint from there. On RVs it is worse than cars because many coach colors were custom mixes never catalogued at all.

Why do you need to paint panels that were not damaged?

Because a hard edge is visible and a gradual transition is not. Stopping color at the seam of the repaired panel puts a boundary exactly where the eye looks. Carrying color into the adjacent area at decreasing coverage removes that boundary. Insurers understand this and blend panels are a standard, accepted line item on a collision estimate.

How much does color matching and blending cost?

$500 to $5,000, or 4 to 25 hours at $210 per hour plus paint materials at $55 per paint hour. A solid white blend into one adjacent panel on a cargo van sits at the low end. A tri-coat pearl blended across a long fifth wheel sidewall with custom tinting sits at the high end, because tri-coats require a midcoat letdown as well.

Will insurance pay for blend panels?

Generally yes. Blending into adjacent panels is recognized industry practice and appears on most carrier estimating platforms as a standard operation. Where an adjuster writes the repair panel only, we submit a supplement with the letdown card photographed against the coach showing why an edge-to-edge repair would read as a repair. That documentation is usually what settles it.

My last repair matched in the shop but not outside. What happened?

That is metamerism. Two paints with different pigment packages can reflect identically under one light source and differently under another. Booth lighting is typically around 5000K and daylight in Southern California runs cooler and far more intense. We check every match outdoors in direct sun before mixing a production batch, specifically to catch this.
