What we see on mobile pet grooming vans
Nothing destroys a van body faster than putting a bathtub in it. A grooming van runs water continuously through a workday, and water that goes down a drain in a vehicle is water that has to leave through a fitting, a hose, and a penetration in a floor that flexes constantly. Every one of those joints is a candidate. When one weeps, the water does not go anywhere. It gets under the flooring, sits on the steel, and stays there because the van is closed up overnight in a driveway or a yard. On a busy grooming van in Orange County or the San Gabriel Valley we routinely find floor rot within four years of the build.
The wall structure behind the panels is the second casualty and it is worse because it is invisible. Spray, steam, and hair get behind the wall paneling at the tub surround and around the dryer, and the moisture stays against the steel. Hair is the aggravating factor because it holds water like a sponge and packs into every cavity. Coastal grooming operations working the beach cities have salt in the air on top of it. We pull panels during any significant repair on these because assessing a grooming van without opening a wall is guessing.
The generator and the water heater are the mechanical stress points. A generator run all day at every stop works its mounting continuously, and a water heater is a heavy tank fastened to a wall or a floor that flexes on every driveway. Both need mounting that is reinforced rather than fastened into sheet metal. We repair floors, walls, structure, plumbing penetrations, and generator and equipment mounting. Body labor is $210 per hour, electrical is $260 per hour, and a 50 percent deposit applies above $2,000.

What actually fails, and why
Floor rot under and around the tub
Drain and supply joints weep into a floor that flexes constantly. Water gets under the flooring and sits against the steel, and because the van is closed overnight it never dries. Four years is a typical time to visible failure.
Wall corrosion behind the tub surround
Spray and steam get behind the wall paneling, and wet hair packs into the cavity and holds the moisture there indefinitely. On coastal operations salt accelerates it. None of it is visible until a panel comes off.
Drain and plumbing penetration failure
Every penetration through a flexing floor works its sealant. The joint weeps rather than gushes, which is worse, because a slow leak into a closed cavity does far more damage over a year than an obvious failure would.
Water heater and tank mounting stress
A heavy tank fastened to a wall or floor that flexes on every driveway and speed bump. Fasteners work through the sheet metal, mounting loosens, and the tank starts moving, which then damages the panel it is fastened to.
Generator mount fatigue
The generator runs at every stop, all day, and vibrates its mounting continuously. Isolators fail, fasteners elongate, and the panel or frame extension it is mounted to cracks at the flange where the load concentrates.

What does grooming van floor repair cost?
Floor section cut-out, welded replacement, treatment, and a spray-in liner runs $2,500 to $8,000 depending on how far the rot has traveled and how much equipment has to come out. Wall panel repair with corrosion treatment is $1,200 to $4,500. Body labor is $210 per hour plus materials, and estimates are paid.
How long am I down?
Two to four weeks for a floor replacement, because the tub and equipment have to come out and go back in. For an owner operator that is the real cost, so we book it as one continuous block and order everything before intake rather than discovering a lead time mid-job. Smaller plumbing and mounting work is three to five days.
How do I stop this from happening again after the repair?
Three things make the difference. A properly sealed spray-in liner over the whole floor rather than flooring laid on bare metal, penetrations bedded in a system that tolerates flex instead of hardening, and leaving the van open to dry rather than closing it up wet overnight. The third one is free and it is the one most operators skip.
Can you build out a new grooming van from a bare cargo van?
Yes. Insulation, flooring, wall paneling, electrical, shore power, generator and equipment mounting, and structural reinforcement are all in-house. What we do not do is plumbing system design, grooming equipment supply, engine or drivetrain work, or DOT inspection. We build the vehicle side and coordinate with whoever supplies the equipment. Structural reinforcement for the tub and equipment is designed before anything gets installed.
The floor feels solid. Should I still have it looked at?
If the van is over three years old and works full days, yes. The failure starts under the flooring where you cannot feel it, and by the time it flexes underfoot the surrounding metal is usually thin as well. Pulling a section of flooring to look costs a couple of hours and it is the difference between a patch and a floor.
