What we see on traffic signal maintenance vehicles
A traffic signal truck does its work parked in or beside a live traffic lane, which makes it the municipal vehicle most exposed to being hit by somebody else. Rear impact from distracted traffic is a real and recurring event on these units, and the damage is complicated because the rear of the truck is where the material body, the arrow board, the lighting, and frequently the attenuator mounting all live. A rear hit involves all of it at once, plus the aerial device mounting behind the cab, and estimating it accurately requires disassembly rather than a walkaround.
The aerial device on a signal truck is smaller than a line crew bucket truck but the structural principle is identical. Boom moment is resolved through mounting into the chassis frame, and that mounting is a fatigue location. Signal crews set up several times a day at intersections across a city, which for an agency covering the San Gabriel Valley or north Orange County means hundreds of setups a month. We inspect the pedestal mounting and the subframe on every signal truck that comes through, because the failure is hidden and consequential.
The rest of the vehicle is a compartmented body carrying signal heads, controllers, hardware, cones, and signs, and it fails like any utility body. What is distinct is the work zone marking and lighting package. Reflective marking, arrow boards, and warning lighting are what keeps the crew from being hit, and Southern California UV load degrades reflective film and lens material continuously. We treat that as a safety system rather than as cosmetics, and we replace marking to spec rather than patching over degraded film. Body and structural labor is $210 per hour.

What actually fails, and why
Rear impact damage from live traffic
Distracted traffic strikes units working in or beside a lane. The hit involves the material body, arrow board, lighting, and attenuator mounting simultaneously, and the energy carries forward into the frame and the aerial mounting.
Aerial pedestal mounting fatigue
Hundreds of setups a month resolve boom moment through the pedestal mounting into the frame. Welds crack at the flange ends, and because the device still operates normally the crack goes unreported until something moves under load.
Arrow board and warning light mount failure
Boards and lighting are mounted at the extreme rear where road impact loading is highest. Mounting works loose, brackets crack, and a board that flickers or hangs crooked stops doing the one job it exists to do.
Reflective marking degradation
Sustained UV load chalks reflective film and yellows lens material. Reflectivity drops well before the marking looks bad in daylight, which means the truck is less visible at night while appearing fine at the yard in the morning.
Compartment frame distortion and door sag
Heavy permanent load of controllers, hardware, and signal heads plus chassis twist works compartment frames out of square. Doors need lifting to latch, and hardware replacement without frame correction does not hold.
Cone and sign storage rack damage

How long is the truck out of service?
Marking, lighting, and rack work is two to four working days. Compartment and body repair runs one to two weeks. A rear impact repair with frame and aerial mounting correction runs three to six weeks, largely driven by carrier approval time on the supplement. We give a schedule after disassembly.
Do you inspect or certify the aerial device?
No. Aerial device inspection, certification, dielectric testing, and hydraulic service are outside our scope. We repair the mounting structure, subframe, frame, body, and everything around the device, and we tell you clearly which findings belong to a certified aerial inspector rather than to a body shop. That distinction is stated on the estimate so nothing is assumed to have been checked when it was not.
Is reflective marking replacement worth doing on a schedule?
Yes, and we would argue it is the highest-value recurring item on the truck. Reflectivity degrades under Southern California UV long before the marking looks poor in daylight, so a truck that looks fine at the yard is significantly less visible in a night work zone. Replacing to spec on a schedule is cheap insurance for the crew.
Do you do engine, hydraulic, or DOT work?
No. Engine, drivetrain, hydraulic, and DOT inspection work are outside our scope. We handle collision, frame, structural welding, bodies and compartments, mounting structure, emergency and work zone lighting install, DOT reflective tape and compliance marking, and refinish. All work is performed in-shop in Yorba Linda. Findings outside our scope are photographed and handed back to your agency rather than left for someone to rediscover.
