Command vehicles carry communications masts, antenna arrays, generators, shore power, awnings, and workstation interiors, all on a body that has been penetrated dozens of times. Roof penetration leaks, mast and antenna mount fatigue, generator mounting stress, and electrical faults are the pattern. We repair and refinish in Yorba Linda.

What we see on command and emergency vehicles

A command vehicle is a rolling building, and like a building its recurring problem is the roof. Communications masts, antenna arrays, satellite equipment, weather sensors, floodlights, and air conditioning all penetrate the roof, and each penetration is a seal that fails on the Southern California schedule, which is hardened by inland heat cycling through summer and then found by the first real storm in December. What makes it worse on a command vehicle than on an RV is what is underneath. Water entering above a communications rack or a workstation is an equipment loss event, not a stain.

The mast and antenna mounting is the structural half of the same problem. A telescoping mast applies a real moment to its mounting when it is extended and any wind is present, and command vehicles are deployed in exactly the conditions where wind is present. The mounting works, the fasteners elongate, the seal at the base opens, and now you have a structural issue and a leak in the same place. We reinforce mast and antenna mounting with proper backing and load distribution rather than reinstalling into the same fastener pattern that failed.

The third area is power and the interior. Generators mounted in a compartment vibrate constantly and load their mounting, shore power inlets take physical abuse in deployment, and interior workstations are fastened into a body that flexes. Twelve volt and shore power diagnostics run at $260 per hour and diagnostics at $285 per hour. These units also sit unused for long periods between deployments, which is its own problem because battery systems, seals, and awnings all degrade faster unused than in service. We handle body, structure, roof, mounting, electrical, and interior work in-shop at Yorba Linda.

What actually fails, and why

Roof penetration seal failure

Inland heat cycling hardens sealant at mast, antenna, sensor, and air conditioning penetrations until it separates at the substrate edge. The first serious storm finds it, and the water lands on communications equipment rather than on a floor.

Mast and antenna mount fatigue

An extended mast in wind applies a moment to its mounting. Fasteners elongate, the base seal opens, and you now have a structural problem and a leak at the same location. Reinstalling into the same pattern repeats the failure.

Generator compartment mounting stress

A generator vibrates continuously in a compartment fastened to the body. Mounting isolators fail, fasteners work loose, and the compartment structure around the mount cracks, which then transmits noise and vibration into the workspace.

Shore power inlet and cable entry damage

Inlets and cable entries take physical abuse during deployment and get connected in the dark in bad conditions. Housings crack, the seal behind the inlet opens, and water enters an electrical compartment rather than a cargo one.

Awning arm and canopy damage in wind

Awnings deployed at an incident during a Santa Ana event bend arms and tear fabric. A bent arm binds the mechanism and tears fabric on the next deployment, which is usually discovered at the next incident rather than in the yard.

Interior workstation and rack mount loosening

Racks and workstations are fastened into a body that flexes over road impacts during response driving. Mounting works through the substrate, and equipment that is not solidly mounted damages both itself and the panel it is fastened to.

What does command vehicle repair cost?

Roof penetration reseal across the vehicle runs $1,200 to $4,000. Mast or antenna mount reinforcement with reseal is $1,500 to $5,500. Generator compartment mounting rebuild runs $1,200 to $4,500. Body labor is $210 per hour, electrical is $260 per hour, and diagnostics is $285 per hour, plus materials. A paid estimate is required before scheduling.

How long is the unit out of service?

Roof reseal and mount reinforcement is three to six working days. Electrical diagnosis and repair varies with what the diagnostic finds, typically two to seven days. Collision or structural repair runs three to six weeks. Since these units are single-purpose and hard to substitute, we sequence everything into one block rather than multiple visits.

Our unit sits between deployments and something is always wrong when we pull it out. Why?

Because dormancy is harder on these than service is. Batteries self-discharge and sulfate, seals harden without the flexing that service provides, awning fabric takes a set, and small leaks go unnoticed for months. An annual body and systems check while the unit is parked catches all of that before an incident does.

Do you work on the communications equipment itself?

No. Radio, satellite, and communications equipment service is outside our scope, as is engine, drivetrain, and DOT inspection work. We repair the body, roof, penetrations, mast and antenna mounting structure, generator mounting, shore power and twelve volt systems, air conditioning, interior mounting, and finish. Mounting structure for that equipment is in scope even where the equipment is not, and we separate the two on the estimate.

Can you reinforce the mast mounting so this stops recurring?

Yes, and on a unit that has already loosened once it is the right call. We install proper backing plates, distribute the load across more structure, and re-bed the penetration with a system that holds up to inland heat cycling rather than the original sealant schedule. It is itemized separately from repair and priced before we start.
