What this work actually involves
Factory RV furniture is built to a price and a shipping weight. Jackknife sofas use thin-gauge tube frames with foam that compresses permanently inside three seasons, and booth dinettes are frequently stapled particle board with a vinyl wrap. Owners replace them not because they broke in an unusual way but because they wore out exactly as designed. The upgrade path is usually theater seating with powered recline, a residential-style sofa, or a fabricated dinette with a solid ply base and real storage.
The part that gets done wrong elsewhere is anchoring. Factory furniture is often screwed into the floor decking alone, which is 5/8 inch ply over a steel or aluminum frame. That holds a 90 pound jackknife sofa. It does not reliably hold a 300 pound pair of powered theater seats through a panic stop, and in a motorized coach or a van that seating position may be occupied while the vehicle is moving. We locate the frame members and anchor through the decking into steel with backing plates, or we add blocking where no member exists.
Power is the other consideration. Powered recline, heat, and massage all pull twelve volt current that the factory never routed to that wall. We run properly sized wire on its own protected circuit rather than tapping the nearest light feed, which is what causes the mystery voltage drops owners report after an aftermarket install. On a coach that boondocks, we will also tell you what that added draw does to your battery runtime.

We measure the seating wall, the ceiling clearance for full recline, and the entry door opening. Plenty of furniture fits the wall and will not fit through the door.

Options priced against the space, then compared on weight so you know what the swap does to your payload before the furniture is ordered.

Removal and floor assessment
Old furniture out and the decking under it inspected. Long-term seating locations hide soft spots because nobody ever walks there to notice.

Structural mounting preparation
Frame members located, backing plates fitted, and blocking added where no member exists, so the seat load goes into structure rather than into plywood.

Electrical provisioning

Can theater seats go anywhere a sofa was?
Not always. Theater seats need rear clearance for full recline and enough ceiling height for the headrest, and the pair is typically deeper than the sofa it replaces, which can narrow your walkway past a slide. We measure the wall, the recline path, and the slide travel before recommending a model.
Is factory furniture anchoring good enough for heavier seating?
Usually not. Most factory seating is screwed into floor decking only, which is adequate for a light tube-frame sofa and marginal for a 300 pound powered pair. We anchor into frame members with backing plates, or add blocking where no member exists. In a motorized coach where that seat may be occupied underway, this is not an optional detail.
Will powered seating drain my batteries?
The recline motors draw briefly and are not the issue. Seat heat and continuous massage are, and on a coach with a modest lead-acid house bank they will shorten your boondocking runtime noticeably. We size and fuse the circuit properly and tell you the realistic draw so you can decide whether the battery bank needs attention too.
Can you build a custom dinette instead of buying one?
Yes, and for odd openings it is often the better answer. We build benches from prefinished ply with a real storage cavity, size the table to the actual walkway you have, and upholster the cushions to your fabric choice. Custom typically costs more than a catalog dinette but fits the space instead of nearly fitting it.
