The short answer

What this work actually involves
The single reason RV floors fail more than house floors is thermal movement. A rigid core LVT plank has a coefficient of expansion that is irrelevant in a climate-controlled house and very relevant in a trailer that sits at 45F in Lancaster in February and 135F in Indio in August. Install it tight to the walls the way a residential installer would, and it will buckle at the first real heat cycle. We hold a proper perimeter expansion gap and hide it under scribe trim, and we let material acclimate in the shop before it goes down.
The second reason is the slide. A slide-out floor moves independently of the main floor, so the transition at the slide threshold takes constant shear. Sheet vinyl run continuously through that opening tears. LVT run continuously through it lifts and the edges chip. The correct detail is a terminated edge with a transition strip on both the room floor and the slide floor, sealed so the gap does not become the water path into the decking underneath.
Before any floor goes down we meter the decking across the full area, not just where you noticed something. Southern California units take on water at window corners, at the wet bath, and at the entry step, and the failure is usually invisible until you lift the covering and look at bare wood. If the subfloor reads wet or the screw holds have gone soft, that gets corrected first and priced separately. Laying new material over compromised decking guarantees the job comes back, and it comes back worse.

How we do it, step by step
- 01
Layout and material selection
We measure the actual coverage, including under slide and under furniture, and go through material options with the operating temperature range of a parked RV in mind.

Furniture and appliance removal
Dinette, sofa, and any appliance sitting on the floor comes out. Cutting around furniture is faster and looks it, and it leaves the worst of the old adhesive in place.

Demolition and substrate exposure
Old covering and adhesive residue removed to bare decking so the substrate can actually be assessed rather than assumed.

Moisture metering and decking repair
Decking metered across the whole floor. Soft or wet areas are cut out and replaced in matching thickness before any new covering is ordered to the floor.

Acclimation and prep
Material acclimated in the shop, substrate leveled where the deck seams telegraph, and layout lines struck so the plank run stays parallel to the coach centerline.

Installation with movement allowance
Perimeter expansion gap held and hidden under trim, wet area seams sealed, and slide thresholds terminated with transitions rather than run through.

Trim, reinstall and clean
Toe kicks and base trim scribed to the new height, furniture and appliances reset and reanchored, and the coach cleaned before handoff.

What flooring holds up best in an RV in Southern California?
Rigid core luxury vinyl plank, installed with a real expansion gap, is the best all-around choice for our climate. It tolerates the swing from a 40F high desert night to a 135F low desert afternoon better than laminate, it does not absorb water like carpet, and damaged planks can be replaced individually. Tile looks excellent but adds meaningful weight and cracks where the floor flexes.
Why did my new RV floor buckle?
Almost always because it was installed tight to the walls. Vinyl plank expands with heat, and in a closed coach in the low desert it has nowhere to go, so it lifts in a ridge somewhere in the middle of the run. The fix is to pull the perimeter, trim back the material to a proper gap, and reset it under scribe trim.
Do you replace the floor under the slide-out?
Yes, and it should be done at the same time. The slide floor and the room floor are two independent surfaces, and replacing only one leaves you a visible height and color mismatch at the threshold. We terminate both edges properly and seal the gap so it stops being a water path into the decking.
What if you find a soft subfloor when the old floor comes up?
We stop, photograph it, meter the extent, and price the decking repair before continuing rather than covering it up. New material laid over wet or soft decking will telegraph the seams, the fasteners will not hold, and the failure will be back inside a season. It is a common finding on units that have had a window or slide seal leaking quietly. On an insurance claim, that photographed finding is also what supports the supplement.
