Class C Motorhomes Repair

The short answer

A Class C is a coach body built onto a cutaway van chassis with a sleeping or storage cabover extending above the factory cab. That cab-to-house joint is the signature failure point. We repair cabover caps, water-damaged cabover decking, sidewalls, and roofs at our Yorba Linda shop.

What we see on class c motorhomes

Everything unusual about a Class C comes from one design decision, which is building a coach body onto a factory cab that was engineered to stand alone. The Ford E-Series or Chevy cutaway cab arrives complete with its own roof, doors, and windshield, and the coach manufacturer builds a house behind it and then extends a fiberglass cabover forward over the top of that cab. The joint where the two meet is a butt seam between a stamped steel roof and a bonded fiberglass cap, two materials with completely different expansion rates, sealed with caulk and covered with trim. It is the most reliably leaking joint in the entire RV industry, and it leaks into the worst possible place.

That place is the cabover decking. Water entering at the cab joint runs rearward under the cabover mattress and soaks the plywood platform and the framing that supports it. Because the bed sits on top of it and the ceiling panel sits under it, nothing is visible until the floor of the cabover goes soft or a stain appears on the ceiling above the cab. By then the framing is usually gone at the front corners. We open more cabovers than any other structure in the shop, and the interval from first leak to structural rot is short in Southern California specifically because our rain arrives concentrated after months of dry that has already opened the sealant.

The cabover is also the most exposed part of the vehicle. It is the highest forward surface, so it takes the first hit in a low clearance strike in an urban basin parking structure and it takes the full sandblast during a Santa Ana event through the Cajon or Banning pass. High desert hail in Victorville and Lancaster hits it at an angle that cracks the fiberglass rather than just denting it, because the cabover face is nearly vertical while the roof behind it is flat.

What actually fails, and why

Leak at the cab-to-cabover joint

Steel cab roof and fiberglass cap expand at different rates and shear the sealant between them. Water enters at the joint, travels rearward beneath the cabover mattress, and reaches the plywood deck long before any interior stain shows.

Rotted cabover deck and front framing

Once water is in the cabover, the plywood platform and the framing at the front corners lose strength. The first symptom is usually a soft spot under a knee when climbing onto the bed, at which point the framing has been wet for a year or more.

Cabover cap impact from low clearance strikes

The cabover is the tallest forward point on the vehicle. Parking structure clearance bars, drive-through canopies, and low branches hit it first, cracking the fiberglass across the face and frequently shearing the cap from its front mounting flange.

Hail cracking on the vertical cabover face

High desert hail out of Hesperia and Lancaster strikes the near-vertical cabover face directly rather than at a glancing angle. Fiberglass responds by cracking and starring rather than denting, and the damage often reads as cosmetic until it is tap tested.

Rear wall separation at the roof-to-wall corner

Cutaway chassis flex is carried through the house to the rear wall. On stick-and-tin construction the top rear corner opens along the trim, letting water into the wall cavity behind the rear cap or ladder mount.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to repair a rotted cabover on a Class C?

It depends entirely on how far the water traveled. Replacing decking and front framing with the cap left in place is often in the low thousands. If the cap has to come off to reach the corner framing, or if rot has reached the cab joint structure, it climbs well past ten thousand. Body labor is $210 per hour, and we scope it only after opening the cabover.

How do I know if my cabover is wet before it goes soft?

Press firmly along the deck near the front corners and at the cab joint, look for any wave or discoloration in the ceiling panel over the cab, and check whether the cabover window still closes evenly. Moisture readings taken through the interior panel confirm it. Catching it while it reads wet but still feels solid is the difference between a repair and a rebuild.

Is a cabover leak covered by insurance?

Gradual water intrusion is normally excluded as maintenance. A sudden event is different. If a hail strike, a limb, or a clearance bar impact cracked the cap and water followed, that is a covered loss and we document the impact damage and the resulting intrusion together in one supplement. The distinction the adjuster cares about is whether there is an identifiable event.

Should I reseal the cab joint myself?

Adding sealant on top of failed sealant traps water rather than stopping it. Doing it correctly means removing the trim, cutting the old material out completely, cleaning both substrates, and applying a sealant rated for the joint movement between steel and fiberglass. That is a shop job on a lift. We do it as part of a roof reseal so the whole water path gets addressed at once.

Can you repair hail damage to the cabover and roof together?

Yes, and they should be handled together because a hail claim covers the whole vehicle. Fiberglass on the cabover face is repaired by grinding out the stars, laying up, fairing, and refinishing. The membrane roof behind it usually shows bruising rather than punctures, which is why we document both surfaces before the carrier inspects.
