What this work actually involves

An absorption refrigerator has no compressor. It boils an ammonia and water solution with a heat source, either an LP burner or a 120V element, and circulates it through a sealed cooling unit by gravity and convection. That design has two consequences owners run into constantly. It needs to be reasonably level to work, and it needs a strong convective airflow path from the lower sidewall vent up past the coils and out the roof vent. Block that airflow or park badly out of level and a perfectly healthy unit will not cool.

Low desert heat is where absorption units meet their limit. Above roughly 100 degrees ambient they lose capacity quickly, and at 115 to 120 in Palm Springs, Indio, or Coachella they cannot maintain safe food temperature at all on the sunny side of the coach. Adding a vent fan behind the coils, correcting the baffle so air actually passes the coils instead of around them, and shading the sidewall makes a real difference. When an owner tells us a unit worked fine for years and quit in July, ambient heat is the first thing we investigate.

The permanent failure is a cracked or plugged cooling unit, usually announced by a yellow residue and a sharp ammonia smell at the back of the refrigerator. That is not repairable in place and it is where the conversion conversation starts. A 12V compressor refrigerator cools regardless of ambient and regardless of level, and with a lithium bank the power draw is manageable. It costs more up front than a replacement absorption unit and it is what we install most often now.

How we do it, step by step

    Cooling unit assessment

    Rear of the unit inspected for ammonia residue and leak evidence first, because a failed cooling unit ends the diagnosis and changes the conversation to replacement.

    Heat source split

    LP and 120V paths tested separately. A unit that cools on one and not the other has a heat source fault, not a cooling unit fault, and that is a much cheaper repair.

    Airflow and installation review

    Lower vent, baffle, and roof vent path checked. Air that bypasses the coils instead of passing them is a very common cause of poor performance in Southern California heat.

    Controls and sensing

    Control board, eyebrow board, and thermistor position and value checked. A thermistor clipped to the wrong fin location produces persistent temperature complaints.

    Repair or conversion decision

    We price the absorption repair, a like for like absorption replacement, and a 12V compressor conversion side by side so the decision is made on real numbers.

Why does my refrigerator quit working in the desert?

The practical fixes are correcting the vent baffle so air actually passes the coils, adding a rear vent fan, and shading that sidewall. Beyond that it is a design limit, not a fault.

Should I convert to a 12V compressor refrigerator?

If your absorption cooling unit has failed, usually yes. A compressor unit cools regardless of ambient temperature and regardless of whether the coach is level, cools down far faster, and has no LP burner to maintain. The requirement is battery capacity. With a lithium bank and any solar it is very manageable. With two flooded batteries it is not.

What does a yellow residue behind the fridge mean?

It means the sealed cooling unit has cracked and the ammonia solution has leaked, usually with a sharp smell alongside it. That is a terminal failure and it cannot be repaired in place. At that point the options are a replacement cooling unit, a replacement absorption refrigerator, or a compressor conversion, and we price all three.

Does being out of level really stop it from cooling?

Yes, on absorption units. The whole system circulates by gravity, so sustained operation out of level lets the solution pool and can permanently damage the cooling unit, not just pause it. A few degrees is tolerable. Parking noticeably off level on a slope for a weekend with the refrigerator running is how cooling units get killed.
