Class B Camper Vans Repair

The short answer

A Class B is a camper built inside a factory van shell, usually a Sprinter, Transit, ProMaster, or Chevy chassis. Because the steel body is the structure, every roof fan, window, and rack mount is a hole in a load path. We repair the shell, the openings, and the systems behind them.

What we see on class b camper vans

A Class B has no separate house and no cage. The van body is a welded unibody whose stiffness comes from the shape of the roof bows, the rocker sections, and the continuity of the seams between them. That is a fundamentally different repair problem than a laminated coach. When a Sprinter body side is creased, you are looking at deformation in a structural panel, and pulling the dent without relieving the stress locked into the adjacent seam leaves the shell carrying a permanent set. It also means every conversion cutout matters. A fourteen inch fan opening between two roof bows, a window cut into the body side, or a solar rack bolted through the roof each remove or reroute stiffness that has to be replaced with a properly framed and bonded opening.

The conversion loads are the second half of the story. A finished Class B carries cabinetry, a bed platform, lithium batteries, water tanks, and insulation, several hundred pounds of it, hung on brackets that tie into factory ribs never rated for concentrated load. We routinely find cracked rib welds around bed platform mounts and stress cracks radiating from window corners on vans that have never been hit by anything. Those cracks then meet Southern California coastal air. A hole saw leaves bare cut steel with no factory e-coat, so a van garaged in Long Beach or Oceanside starts rusting from the inside of every conversion cutout outward.

The third distinction is the chassis electronics. A modern Class B carries lane keeping, radar cruise, blind spot monitoring, and parking sensors on a chassis that also happens to be a house. Any bumper, windshield, mirror, or body side repair that disturbs a sensor mount requires a documented scan and recalibration afterward. That is not optional cleanup, it is part of the repair, and it is one of the more common things we find left undone on vans that come to us after work elsewhere.

What actually fails, and why

Stress cracks radiating from conversion window corners

A window cut into a body side without a properly bonded reinforcing frame creates a stress riser at each corner. Cracks propagate diagonally into the panel over a few thousand miles, and they will keep growing until the opening is reframed, not just filled.

Corrosion at cut edges of roof and wall penetrations

Every conversion cutout exposes bare steel. In coastal air from Newport Beach to San Diego, that edge blooms rust under the sealant and lifts the fan flange, which then leaks. The rust is always larger than the visible stain when the flange comes off.

Cracked rib welds under build-out mounting brackets

Bed platforms and cabinet runs concentrate several hundred pounds into a handful of factory ribs. Washboard on a desert access road or repeated grade on the 74 works those joints until the spot welds fail and the bracket starts moving in the panel.

Raised fiberglass top bond line separation

Aftermarket high tops are bonded and screwed to a cut steel roof. Sustained low desert heat softens the adhesive, the top expands at a different rate than the steel, and the perimeter seal opens along the rear radius first.

Body side and sliding door damage from urban use

Because Class B vans get parked in structures and on street, they collect door edge dings, pillar scrapes, and slider track damage. A bent slider track binds the roller and eventually tears the door skin at the lower hinge.

Driver assistance faults after body repair

Radar behind the grille and cameras in the windshield and mirrors go out of aim with any panel or glass disturbance. Symptoms show as intermittent lane keeping warnings or a blind spot system that reports faults on freeway merges.

Frequently asked questions

Does my van need ADAS recalibration after body work?

If the repair touched a bumper cover, grille, windshield, mirror, or any panel carrying a camera, radar, or ultrasonic sensor, yes. We perform a pre-repair scan, document the fault codes, and complete a post-repair scan and recalibration to the manufacturer procedure. A system that is a degree off aims at the wrong lane line and gives you warnings you will learn to ignore.

How much does it cost to reframe a leaking conversion window?

Removing the window, cutting back the corrosion, fabricating and bonding a proper reinforcing frame, resealing, and refinishing the surrounding panel typically runs a few thousand dollars at $210 per hour for body and paint. If the cracks have propagated into the body side beyond the frame area, the panel section repair adds to it. We quote after removal, not before.

Can you finish a van build someone else started?

Yes, and it is a large share of what we do on Class B units. We assess the existing framing, insulation, and wiring first, tell you plainly what has to be redone versus what can be built on, then complete cabinetry, flooring, insulation, and the twelve volt system. Electrical and system work is billed at $260 per hour.

Why is my new roof fan leaking again after being resealed?

Because resealing over corrosion does not work. Once the cut edge of the roof opening has rust under the flange, the sealant is bonding to a surface that is actively lifting. The fix is pulling the fan, cutting back to sound steel, treating and coating the edge, then setting a new flange. Otherwise you are resealing it every season.

Do you offer service at my storage lot or campsite?

No. All work is performed at our Yorba Linda facility. Structural welding, panel bonding, corrosion treatment, refinishing, and ADAS recalibration all require a controlled environment and equipment that does not travel. Recalibration in particular needs measured floor space and known targets, which a storage lot cannot provide. If your van is not drivable, we can talk through transport options when you call.
