Skoolies, Converted School Buses Repair

The short answer

A skoolie is a school bus converted to living space, built body-on-frame with riveted steel ribs and skin. Roof raises, window deletes, original floor corrosion, and owner-installed systems drive the repairs. We handle structural welding, roof sealing, and interior rebuilds in Yorba Linda.

What we see on skoolies, converted school buses

A school bus body is riveted steel sheet over formed steel ribs, sitting on a separate ladder frame, and it is far tougher than any RV structure of comparable size. That toughness is why skoolies exist. It also means the conversion work done to it is what usually needs repair, not the bus. Two modifications account for most of what we see. The first is a roof raise, where the body is cut horizontally, lifted, and a band of new material spliced in. Done properly the splice is welded with continuous reinforcement inside every rib and the seam is designed to shed water. Done quickly it is a lap joint held with self-tappers and a bead of sealant, and it will leak along its entire length within two seasons and eventually crack at the rib splices.

The second is window deletes. Original bus windows are structural in the sense that their frames tie the rib sections together, so plating over an opening with sheet metal without restoring the frame stiffness leaves a soft section in the body side. On a bus that is regularly loaded with several thousand pounds of tanks, batteries, and cabinetry, those soft sections show up as body side oil canning and as cracks radiating from the plated corners. We reframe them properly, which means welding in structure rather than skinning over the hole.

Underneath, the original floor is the sleeper problem. School bus floors are plywood over steel, and after twenty years of institutional service that plywood has been wet many times from window leaks and heater cores. Owners frequently build a new floor directly on top of it. Then the steel under the plywood keeps corroding, and in coastal or inland valley humidity it perforates. Every skoolie we take in for anything gets the original floor evaluated, because a beautiful interior over a rotten deck is the most common expensive mistake in this segment.

What actually fails, and why

Roof raise seam leakage and splice cracking

A lap-joint roof raise held with self-tappers and sealant flexes at every rib. Sealant shears, water enters along the full length of the seam, and the rib splices develop cracks that keep opening under road input until they are properly welded and reinforced.

Body side softness and cracking at window deletes

Plating over a window opening without restoring frame stiffness leaves the body side unsupported. Panels oil can while driving and cracks radiate from the plated corners, particularly on buses loaded heavily with tanks and batteries.

Original floor corrosion under a new build

Twenty years of institutional service leaves the plywood deck repeatedly wet and the steel beneath it corroding. Building a new floor on top seals the moisture in, and perforation continues unseen until a cabinet leg goes through.

Roof penetration leaks at owner-installed vents and hatches

Fans and hatches cut into a curved steel bus roof rarely sit flat, so sealant carries a gap it was never meant to bridge. Inland valley heat cycling opens it, and the first concentrated winter rain puts water into the ceiling.

Rear and side impact damage to riveted body panels

Bus panels are steel over ribs, so an impact deforms both. Pulling the skin without correcting the rib beneath leaves a wave that returns as soon as the body flexes. Panel sections are cut out and replaced rather than filled.

Frequently asked questions

My roof raise leaks. Can it be sealed or does it need rebuilding?

It depends on how the splice was made. If there is continuous structure inside every rib and the seam simply needs its sealant renewed, that is a manageable job. If the raise is a lap joint on self-tappers, adding sealant buys a season at most. The durable fix is welding the splice properly with internal reinforcement, then finishing the seam so water sheds rather than sits.

How much does it cost to replace the original bus floor?

Removing the interior back to the deck, cutting out corroded steel, welding in new plate, treating and coating the structure, and installing a new subfloor typically runs well into five figures on a full-length bus. Body and structural labor is $210 per hour. If the build above it has to come out and go back in, that adds substantially.

Should I check the floor before I build my interior?

Absolutely, and this is the single most valuable thing an owner can do. Pull the original plywood, inspect and repair the steel, treat it against corrosion, and then build. Doing it in that order costs a fraction of what it costs to discover perforation after cabinetry, plumbing, and flooring are in. We do exactly this scope regularly for owners about to start a build.

Do you weld on bus structure?

Yes. All structural welding is performed in shop by certified technicians, including roof raise splice correction, window delete reframing, rib repair, and floor structure replacement. We do not send structural work out. Welding a bus body correctly means restoring the rib as a continuous member, not just closing a gap in the skin.

Can I get a skoolie insured and will damage be covered?

Coverage varies by carrier and usually depends on the build being documented and the vehicle being registered appropriately. Build photographs, receipts, and an itemized equipment list matter more here than on almost any other vehicle. During repairs we photograph and itemize modifications so installed equipment appears in the supplement rather than being treated as unlisted.
