Reefer, Refrigerated Trucks Repair

The short answer

Refrigerated bodies are insulated sandwich panel with a sealed interior liner, and any breach of that envelope costs fuel, cargo, and eventually the panel. Liner punctures, skin damage, door gasket failure, and heat load on rooftop units drive the work. We repair reefer skins, liners, doors, and frames in Yorba Linda.

What we see on reefer, refrigerated trucks

A refrigerated body is an insulated envelope, and its whole job is to stay sealed. The construction is a sandwich, with an outer skin, a foam insulation core, and an inner liner, all bonded. When a pallet corner punches through the interior liner, that is not a cosmetic scuff. It is an open path for moisture into the foam core, and wet foam does two things. It stops insulating, so the unit runs harder and burns more fuel for the rest of the body life, and it holds water against the panel bond, which starts delamination that spreads outward from the puncture.

Southern California produces a specific set of failures on these. Low-desert routes through the Coachella Valley, Indio, and out toward Blythe put rooftop and nose-mounted refrigeration units under sustained ambient heat well above their comfortable design range for months at a time, and the mounting structure takes that thermal cycling along with the vibration. We see nose panel cracking at the unit mounting flange as a direct result. On the other end of the region, produce and cold chain routes running the coastal corridor and the Long Beach and Carson port area put salt air on the rear frame and the underside, and a corroded rear frame on a reefer opens the door seal geometry, which is the most expensive slow leak an operator can have.

Door gaskets and rear frames are worth checking on every unit annually. A gasket that has taken a compression set no longer seals even though the door closes and latches normally, and the operator sees it as a fuel and run-time number rather than as a repair item. We repair reefer skins, liners, insulation, doors, gaskets, and rear frames, and we treat and repair corrosion. We do not service refrigeration units, engines, or drivetrains, and we do not perform DOT inspections.

What actually fails, and why

Interior liner puncture and foam saturation

Pallet corners and forklift tines punch the liner. Moisture reaches the foam core, the panel stops insulating in that area, and the bond between liner and core begins separating outward from the puncture. It never gets better on its own.

Rear door gasket compression set

Heat and time take the memory out of the gasket. The door closes and latches normally but no longer seals, so the unit runs longer and burns more fuel. Operators usually notice it as a run-time number rather than as a visible defect.

Rear frame corrosion and aperture distortion

Coastal and port-area routes put salt on the rear frame and underside. As the frame corrodes and dock contact distorts the aperture, the doors stop meeting the gasket evenly, which is the most expensive slow leak on the vehicle.

Nose panel cracking at the refrigeration unit mount

The unit concentrates weight and vibration at the nose, and low-desert heat cycling works the mounting flange continuously. Cracks radiate from the mounting fasteners, then open a moisture path directly into the front panel core.

Outer skin puncture and panel delamination

Dock plates, gate posts, and forklift contact open the outer skin. Water gets into the core from outside, and Southern California heat then drives adhesive softening, so the panel separates over a much larger area than the visible damage.

Floor drain and threshold damage

Reefer floors are channeled for airflow and drainage. Pallet jack wheels crush the channels at the threshold, drainage stops working, and standing water sits against the floor bond line at the rear, where the frame is already corroding.

Frequently asked questions

How much does reefer box repair cost?

A contained liner puncture with local core replacement runs $800 to $2,500. Outer skin section replacement with core and liner is $2,500 to $9,000 depending on area. Rear frame correction with corrosion treatment runs $2,000 to $7,500. Body labor is $210 per hour plus materials, with a 50 percent deposit at authorization above $2,000.

Is a small liner puncture actually worth repairing?

Yes, and sooner is dramatically cheaper. A puncture is a moisture path into the foam core. Wet foam stops insulating permanently, so the unit runs harder for the rest of the body life, and the bond starts separating outward from the hole. A same-week repair is a few hundred dollars of labor. A year later it is a panel section.

How long is the body down for reefer repair?

A liner patch is one to two days. Skin and core section replacement runs one to two weeks including cure time on the bonding, which cannot be rushed without producing a repair that separates. Rear frame correction is one to two weeks. We schedule around your cold chain commitments if you tell us the constraint at intake.

Do you service the refrigeration unit itself?

No. We do not service refrigeration units, engines, or drivetrains, and we do not perform DOT inspections. What we do is the body side, which is skin, insulation core, liner, doors, gaskets, rear frame, corrosion, structural repair, and refinish, plus the mounting structure the unit sits on. All of it in-shop at Yorba Linda.

Our doors close fine but the unit runs constantly. What should we check?

Gasket compression set and rear aperture geometry, in that order. A gasket that has hardened seals nothing even though the latch feels normal, and an aperture that has been distorted by dock contact means the door cannot meet the gasket evenly no matter how good the gasket is. Both are body-side repairs and both are commonly missed.
