What this work actually involves
Powered awnings put a motor inside the roller tube, a control board somewhere in the sidewall or a nearby compartment, and usually a wind sensor mounted on an arm. Each of those fails in its own way. Motors fail from thermal overload after repeated cycling against a bind, boards fail from voltage spikes and moisture intrusion, and wind sensors fail by either retracting the awning constantly or never retracting it at all. Diagnosing which one you have means measuring voltage at the motor under load rather than guessing from the symptom, because a motor that hums and stalls looks identical to a board that is only delivering one leg.
Arms take damage two ways in Southern California. Urban basin driving through Long Beach, Anaheim, and the Los Angeles surface grid clips awning arms on poles, pillars, and gate posts, and an arm bent even slightly binds the mechanism and tears the next fabric on deployment. Santa Ana wind events across the inland valleys do the more dramatic version, folding arms backward and sometimes tearing the mounting rail out of the sidewall. On a lever arm that long, wind load is enormous, and the arm is designed to be the part that gives.
The part that matters after any arm damage is the sidewall. Awning rails and arm brackets are fastened into structural blocking behind the wall, and when a wind event tears a bracket loose it usually elongates the fastener holes or pulls the blocking. Bolting a new arm into the same compromised holes puts the next failure on a schedule. We open the wall where needed, verify or replace the blocking, and reseal the mounting before hanging new hardware, because the fastening is doing the work, not the bracket.

Arms operated manually through their full travel to find binding. A motor replaced on a binding arm burns out again, so the mechanical side is cleared before parts are ordered.

My powered awning only goes one direction. Is that the motor?
Usually not. A motor that works in one direction is receiving power on one leg only, which points at the control board, the switch, or a connector rather than the motor. That is why we measure voltage at the motor under load in both directions before ordering anything. Replacing a healthy motor is an expensive way to confirm a board fault.
Can a bent awning arm be straightened instead of replaced?
We do not straighten them. Awning arms are extruded aluminum designed to give under wind load, and straightening one work-hardens the bend and creates the next fracture point. The bigger issue is that a slightly out of true arm binds the mechanism, loads the motor, and tears fabric on deployment. Replacement is the correct repair.
Is wind damage to awning arms covered by insurance?
Generally yes under comprehensive, and Santa Ana season produces a steady volume of these claims out of the inland valleys. Some policies exclude damage to an awning left deployed while the coach was unattended, so the circumstances matter. We document the arm damage, the sidewall and blocking damage, and the fabric damage as one event so the scope is complete.
Why does my wind sensor retract the awning when there is no wind?
Sensors read vibration at the arm, not actual wind speed, so anything that shakes the arm triggers them. A loose bracket, a worn pivot, or a sensor whose mount has come loose all produce false retractions. Sensitivity is adjustable on most units, but if the arm itself has play, tightening the sensitivity only masks a mechanical problem.
