The short answer
Slide-out mechanism service diagnoses and repairs Schwintek In-Wall, Power Gear rack and pinion, BAL Accu-Slide cable, and HWH hydraulic systems. Work runs $500 to $8,500 and up, or 3 to 35 plus hours at $260 per hour mechanical and electrical rate, with diagnostics at $285 per hour.
01
What this work actually involves
There are four common slide architectures and they fail in four completely different ways. Lippert Schwintek In-Wall drives the room from vertical gear tracks in the side jambs with two synchronized motors and a controller, and its classic failure is loss of synchronization, where one side leads, the room racks, and the controller faults on current. Power Gear rack and pinion pushes the room on toothed rails from underneath, and it wears at the gear teeth and the support rollers. BAL Accu-Slide uses cables and pulleys, so it fails at cable tension and frayed strands. HWH and Lippert hydraulic systems fail at pump solenoids, cylinder seals, and fluid contamination.
Diagnosis matters more here than on almost any other RV system, because the symptoms overlap and the parts are expensive. A Schwintek room that stalls halfway can be a failed motor, a failed controller, a bad ground, a low battery under load, worn gear track, or a room that has gone out of square and is binding in the opening. Replacing the motors on a room that is actually binding on a racked structure wastes the parts and destroys the new motors. We measure the room in the opening and check the seal witness lines before condemning any component.
Southern California adds its own stress. Inland valley heat cycling from Corona through Temecula compresses the seals until the room drags, which increases current draw on every cycle and shortens motor life. Low desert grit in Coachella and Twentynine Palms gets into gear tracks and rollers and grinds them. Coastal salt in Oceanside and Long Beach corrodes ground connections and motor terminals until voltage drop alone makes the controller fault. All of it looks like a mechanism failure and some of it is not.
Systems and brands we work on: Schwintek, Lippert In-Wall, Power Gear, BAL Accu-Slide, HWH.
Location: All work is performed at our Yorba Linda facility. We do not offer mobile, roadside, or fleet route service.

- Full cycle testing under load with current draw compared against specification
03
When you need this service
- A slide that stalls partway out or partway in and then faults
- One side of the room leading the other so the room sits visibly crooked
- Grinding, clicking, or a ratcheting sound during travel
- A room that moves only when you help it, or only on a fully charged battery
- Hydraulic fluid on the ground under the slide rail or on the cylinder rod
- A controller that resets or throws a code every time the room is cycled
- A slide that used to seal evenly and now leaves a gap at one corner
04
How we do it, step by step
- 01
Electrical baseline
Battery state, voltage at the controller under load, ground integrity, and current draw on each motor measured first. A large share of slide faults are power delivery problems.
- 02
Fault code and controller read
Stored codes pulled from the controller and interpreted against the system architecture. Schwintek, Power Gear, and hydraulic controllers report very different things.
- 03
Mechanical inspection and room measurement
Gear tracks, rails, rollers, cables, and cylinders inspected, and the room measured in the opening. A racked room binds and will destroy new motors within a few cycles.
- 04
Documented findings and authorization
Findings priced and sent for approval. Diagnostic time is $285 per hour and is refundable as a credit against an authorized repair, so the diagnosis is not a sunk cost.
- 05
Component repair or replacement
Motors, controllers, gear tracks, cables, pumps, solenoids, or cylinders replaced to the correct specification for that system, with corroded grounds and terminals corrected.
- 06
Synchronization and adjustment
Room re-timed and synchronized, travel limits set, and squareness confirmed so both sides arrive together and the seal compresses evenly across the full perimeter.
- 07
Cycle testing
The room is cycled repeatedly under load with current draw monitored, then seal contact is verified all the way around before the unit is released.

Questions about slide-out mechanism service and repair
Frequently asked questions
How much does slide-out repair cost?
A cable adjustment or a corroded ground repair can be $500. A pair of Schwintek motors with a controller and re-timing runs $2,000 to $3,500. A hydraulic system with a failed pump, contaminated fluid, and a leaking cylinder, or a room that has to come out for track replacement, runs toward $8,500 and up. The range is 3 to 35 plus hours at $260 per hour.
Why does my Schwintek slide keep going out of sync?
Schwintek uses two independent motors that the controller keeps synchronized by current. Anything that makes one side harder to move, a compressed seal dragging, grit in the gear track, a weak ground, or a slightly racked room, causes that side to lag and the controller to fault. Replacing motors without fixing the drag just puts new motors on the same problem.
Can you get my slide in so I can move the RV?
In most cases yes, once the unit is at our facility. Every system has a manual override, whether that is a hex drive on a Schwintek motor, a crank extension on rack and pinion, or a manual release valve on hydraulic. All work is performed at our Yorba Linda facility, so the unit needs to arrive here either driven or transported.
Is slide-out failure covered by insurance?
Mechanical wear is not. Where insurance does apply is when a collision, a storm event, or structural damage caused the room to rack, because then the mechanism damage is consequential to a covered loss. We document whether the room is out of square and why, since that finding is what separates a wear claim from a covered one.
How long can I keep operating a slide that grinds?
Not long, and every cycle makes it more expensive. Grinding usually means gear track or roller wear, and continuing to run it removes material from the track, which is a far larger part than the motor. It also loads the room structure unevenly and can rack the box. The cheap version of this repair is the early one.
