Municipal and Government Fleets

Water and Sewer Utilities

The short answer

Water and sewer fleets get eaten by what they carry. We repair service bodies, bucket truck bodies, valve trucks and vactor support units at our Yorba Linda shop, including chlorine and effluent corrosion, and we mount confined space equipment and racking. Enterprise fund purchase orders accepted, with estimates itemized line by line.

01

What we see from this customer

Corrosion on a water and sewer fleet is chemical before it is atmospheric. Chlorine and hypochlorite carried in a service body eat the compartment floor and the door bottoms from inside, and the first symptom is a door that stops latching because the frame has swelled with corrosion product. On the collection side, effluent and hydrogen sulfide attack differently, going after fasteners and the underside of a deck long before anything shows on a painted surface. We open compartments and pull floor plates during assessment, because the outside of these bodies tells you very little.

Bucket truck and valve truck bodies carry mounted equipment that somebody installed at some point and that was frequently never engineered. Tripod and davit mounting for confined space entry, gas monitor and blower brackets, hose reels and pipe racks all put point loads into a body that was not drawn for them. When a compartment door frame cracks at a corner, the cause is usually a rack bolted through a panel with no backing plate behind it. We repair the panel and add the backing so the same corner does not crack again next year.

A main break does not care what time it is, so utility units are expected to start and roll at three in the morning. That makes downtime a different conversation than it is for a general fund department. Most utilities we deal with budget from an enterprise fund with its own capital and operating lines, which usually means more flexibility on timing and less on documentation. We write estimates itemized by operation, hours, rate and part number so the work codes cleanly. All work is performed at our Yorba Linda facility.

What you are worried about, and the answer

Concern 01

Compartment doors on our service bodies will not close and the frames are corroding.

Corroded door frames swell and change the opening. We cut back to sound metal, replace the frame section, treat what is behind it, and rehang the door to the corrected opening rather than adjusting the latch to fit a distorted frame.

Concern 02

We respond to main breaks at any hour. That unit has to be ready to roll.

Tell us which units are on call rotation. We order parts against a documented estimate before teardown on those, because what keeps a truck in a stall is almost never labor. It is a part nobody ordered on day one.

Concern 03

Confined space and equipment racking was mounted without backing and is cracking the body.

We repair the cracked panel and add backing plates and load spreading behind every mount when it goes back, because a rack bolted through bare sheet will crack the same corner again inside a year.

Concern 04

The bucket truck body is rusting under the boom rest and nobody wants to touch it.

Boom rest and pedestal areas trap water and hold it against the deck, so that is standard corrosion work: cut, treat, replate, coat. We do not certify aerial devices and we do not perform inspection of the boom itself.

Concern 05

Our enterprise fund coding needs an estimate broken out by line, not a lump sum.

Every estimate is itemized by labor operation, hours, rate, part number and part cost, with sales tax at 7.75 percent and the $45 hazmat charge shown separately, which is what a utility accountant needs to code it.

Concern 06

We hauled chemicals in that body and a shop should know before opening a compartment.

Say so at intake and we handle it accordingly. Knowing what was in a compartment before it gets opened changes how we protect the technician and how we handle and dispose of the material we remove.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you repair corrosion on service bodies and bucket trucks?

Yes, and it is most of what we see on a utility fleet. Chlorine and hypochlorite work on compartment floors and door bottoms from the inside. Effluent and hydrogen sulfide go after fasteners and the underside of a deck. Boom rests and pedestals trap water against the plate. The repair is cutting back to sound metal, treating what is behind it, replating and coating, not sanding and painting a surface that is already thin.

Can you mount confined space equipment and racking?

Yes. Tripod and davit mounting, gas monitor and blower brackets, hose reels, pipe racks and interior shelving are all in scope. The part that matters is what goes behind the panel. Most cracked compartment corners we see come from a rack bolted straight through bare sheet with no backing plate, so when we repair the panel the mount goes back with load spreading behind it.

Do you certify aerial devices or perform DOT inspections?

No. We do not certify aerial devices, we do not perform DOT inspections, and we do not do engine, drivetrain or transmission work. DOT reflective tape and marking is in scope, and so is structural repair to the body that a device is mounted on. Those are genuinely different things, and it is worth being clear about the line before a unit gets scheduled into a stall.

How do you handle a unit that is on emergency call rotation?

Tell us at intake which unit answers a three in the morning main break. On those we order parts against a documented estimate before teardown rather than after, because the thing that keeps a truck in a stall is almost never the labor. It is a part that could have been ordered on day one. We also say plainly when a job cannot be split across two visits.

Can you invoice against an enterprise fund purchase order?

Yes. We accept purchase orders and provide a W-9, a certificate of insurance, our California BAR license ARD00288521 and EPA identifier CAL000367879. Estimates and invoices come itemized by labor operation, hours, rate, part number and part cost, with sales tax at 7.75 percent and the flat $45 hazmat charge shown separately, so the work codes cleanly to your operating or capital line.
