Snow Plow Trucks Repair

The short answer

Plow trucks in Southern California work the mountain corridors above Big Bear, Wrightwood, and the Angeles Crest, and they come back coated in brine. Plow frame mounting stress, spreader body corrosion, cab corner rust, and blade impact damage are the pattern. We repair mounts, bodies, and corrosion in Yorba Linda.

What we see on snow plow trucks

Southern California does have plow fleets, and they operate in the harshest corrosion environment in the region. Trucks working the mountain corridors above Big Bear, Wrightwood, Mount Baldy, and the Angeles Crest run brine and salt for months, then return to a base at lower elevation where the temperature is fifty degrees warmer. That cycle of salt saturation followed by warm humid conditions is exactly what corrosion needs. A plow truck accumulates more corrosion damage in three winters than a flatland municipal truck does in fifteen years.

The plow frame mounting is the structural half. A blade takes impact from curbs, manhole covers, expansion joints, and buried obstacles, and every one of those impacts goes through the plow frame into the chassis frame horns. That is a shock load applied to a mounting bracket in a location that is already the most salt-exposed part of the truck. We find cracked mounting brackets, deformed frame horns, and elongated bolt holes on nearly every plow truck we take in, and often the operator only brought it to us for a spreader body issue.

Spreader bodies are their own corrosion problem because they carry the salt itself. Material sits in the hopper, absorbs moisture, and attacks the body from the inside while brine spray attacks it from the outside. Stainless spreader bodies hold up better but their mounting hardware and the chassis under them do not. We repair plow frame mounting, spreader body structure, cab corners, and undercarriage corrosion, with certified welding and coating systems at $210 per hour. Engine, drivetrain, hydraulic, and DOT inspection work is not performed here.

What actually fails, and why

Plow frame mount cracking and frame horn deformation

Blade impacts from curbs and buried obstacles are shock loads through the plow frame into the chassis horns. Mounting brackets crack, holes elongate, and the horns deform, all in the most salt-exposed area of the truck.

Spreader body corrosion from both sides

Material in the hopper absorbs moisture and attacks the body from inside while brine spray attacks it from outside. Floors and lower walls perforate first, and by the time it is visible externally the panel is already thin.

Cab corner and rocker corrosion

Brine reaches the cab corner seams behind the step and the rockers, then sits there through the off season. It shows as a paint blister at the base of the door pillar long after the metal behind it has lost meaningful section.

Undercarriage and crossmember corrosion

Salt collects in crossmember channels and box sections and never fully drains. Corrosion works from inside the section outward, so the rail looks acceptable from below while the inside is consuming itself.

Blade and moldboard impact damage

The moldboard takes direct impact and abrasion. Edges deform, mounting pins elongate, and the trip mechanism mounting cracks, which then transfers more impact load to the plow frame instead of absorbing it.

Lighting and wiring corrosion at the front frame

Plow lighting and its wiring live at the most exposed point on the truck and get buried in salt spray for months. Connectors corrode, grounds fail, and lighting becomes intermittent in exactly the conditions where it matters most.

What does plow truck corrosion and mount repair cost?

Plow frame mount repair with frame horn correction runs $2,000 to $8,000. Spreader body floor section replacement is $2,500 to $9,000. Cab corner section replacement with treatment is $1,600 to $5,000 per side. Undercarriage corrosion remediation and coating starts around $2,500. Labor is $210 per hour plus materials. A paid estimate is required before scheduling.

When should we schedule this work?

Immediately after season, not before the next one. Residual salt keeps working through the off season, so a truck parked in April with salt in its seams is losing metal all summer. Post-season wash, inspection, treatment, and coating is the highest-value maintenance on a plow truck, and it takes a week rather than a month if you catch it early.

How long is the truck down?

Plow frame mount repair is three to seven working days. Spreader body section replacement runs one to two weeks. Comprehensive corrosion remediation across cab corners, body, and undercarriage runs three to six weeks. Agencies should plan the heavy work into the summer window when the unit is not needed. Booking early in the off season gets you the shortest schedule.

Can coating actually stop the corrosion?

It slows it substantially when applied correctly, which means media prep back to sound metal, treatment, and then a coating system rated for salt exposure. Applied over existing corrosion it does nothing except hide the problem while it continues underneath, and we will not do that. On sound metal it buys years.

Do you do hydraulic, engine, or DOT work on plow trucks?

No. Hydraulic, engine, drivetrain, and DOT inspection work are outside our scope. We repair plow frame mounting, chassis frame, spreader body, cab, undercarriage corrosion, lighting and wiring, and refinish, plus DOT reflective tape and compliance marking. All work is in-shop at Yorba Linda. Corrosion found on components we do not service is photographed and documented so your mechanical provider is not surprised by it.
