The short answer

Spot repair fixes a localized chip, scratch, scuff, or small dent without refinishing the whole panel, feathering the repair into the surrounding film. Work runs $500 to $3,500, or 3 to 16 hours at $210 per hour plus $55 per paint hour in materials.

01

What this work actually involves

Not every mark needs a panel. A rock chip on a Sprinter hood, a shopping cart scuff on a cargo van slider, a branch scrape down a travel trailer sidewall from a tight turn into a campsite at Big Bear: these are localized failures in an otherwise sound film. Refinishing the whole panel to fix a four-inch area wastes your money and, on a large RV sidewall with no seams, is not even the safer choice, because a full panel respray on an aged unit creates a new match problem where none existed.

The tradeoff is that spot repair has a size ceiling. Past roughly a six to eight inch repair area, or anywhere the damage crosses a body line, a crown, or a graphics element, the blend zone grows until it stops being a spot repair and becomes a panel. The other limit is film condition. If the surrounding clear is already chalked from sitting uncovered in Victorville or Palm Springs, new clear will not bond reliably to it and the repair will ring within a year. We check adhesion and gloss before we commit to a spot.

What people call a chip is often not just a chip. Road debris on the 15 through the Cajon Pass drives stone impacts that fracture the clear well beyond the visible crater, and on fiberglass those fractures propagate through heat cycling. We inspect under raking light and magnification, and where the fracture pattern runs, the repair area runs with it.

Systems and brands we work on: PPG, Axalta, 3M, SEM.

Location: All work is performed at our Yorba Linda facility. We do not offer mobile, roadside, or fleet route service.

02

What the job includes

  • Rock chip, stone bruise, and road debris impact repair
  • Key scratch, branch scrape, and cart scuff repair
  • Small dent repair combined with localized refinish
  • Clearcoat scratch removal where the damage has not reached basecoat
  • Adhesion and gloss testing of the surrounding film before committing to a spot
  • Feather, prime, and seal of the repair area only
  • Color blended outward with decreasing coverage into sound film
  • Clear applied across the blend zone and melted into the existing film
  • Color sand, compound, and polish of the transition
  • Honest assessment when the damage exceeds what a spot repair can hide

03

When you need this service

  • A chip that has gone through to primer or bare substrate and started to ring
  • A scratch you can catch with a fingernail across the surface
  • A scuff on a slider door, rub rail, or corner from a tight parking maneuver
  • A cluster of stone impacts across a hood or front cap from freeway travel
  • A localized area where a prior touch-up pen has left a raised blob
  • A single small dent with paint damage that does not justify a full panel

04

How we do it, step by step

  1. 01

Inspect under raking light and magnification

We map the actual fracture extent, which on stone impacts routinely runs well past the visible crater, and check whether the damage reached basecoat or substrate.

  2. 02

    Test the surrounding film

Gloss and adhesion checked in the blend zone. If the existing clear is chalked or failing, a spot repair will ring and we will tell you before starting.

  3. 03

    Feather and fill

Damage sanded back to a long feather edge, filled where needed, and blocked flat. A short feather edge is the most common cause of a visible halo later.

  4. 04

    Prime and seal

Spot primer applied and blocked, then sealed so the topcoat sees uniform color underneath rather than a patchwork of primer, old clear, and basecoat.

  5. 05

    Color blend

Color sprayed with decreasing coverage outward into the sound film, matched from a reading off the actual panel rather than the paint code.

  6. 06

    Clear and melt

Clear applied across the blend zone and the outer edge melted into the existing film with a blending solvent so there is no hard clear boundary.

  7. 07

    Level and polish

Repair area color sanded and machine polished until the transition cannot be found by touch or under raking light.

Questions about spot repair and panel blend

Frequently asked questions

How much does spot repair cost compared to painting the whole panel?

Spot repair runs $500 to $3,500, or 3 to 16 hours at $210 per hour plus materials. A full panel refinish on the same vehicle typically starts around double that on a van and far more on an RV sidewall. The savings are real, but only when the damage is genuinely localized and the surrounding film is sound.

When is a spot repair the wrong call?

Three situations. When the damage crosses a body line, a crown, or a graphics element, because the blend has nowhere to terminate. When the repair area exceeds roughly six to eight inches, because the blend zone grows past the panel anyway. And when the surrounding clear is already chalked from sun exposure, because new clear will not bond to failing film.

Can you fix rock chips on my motorhome front cap?

Yes, and cap chips are one of the more common jobs we see, particularly on units that run the 15 through the Cajon Pass or the 10 out to the Coachella Valley. We inspect for fracture propagation into the gelcoat first, because on fiberglass a stone bruise can crack well beyond the visible crater and will open up under heat cycling.

Is a small scratch repair worth filing an insurance claim over?

Usually not. A spot repair frequently lands near or below a typical comprehensive deductible, and a claim on a small cosmetic loss can affect your renewal. Where the scratch is part of a larger covered loss, it goes on the claim. We will tell you plainly which side of that line your damage falls on before you call your carrier.
