What this work actually involves

A hydronic system is a small boiler that heats a glycol loop, then distributes that heat to zone exchangers around the coach and to a domestic hot water exchanger. It is a far better heating system than a forced air furnace and it is also a system where one component failure takes out everything. When an owner reports no heat and no hot water at the same time, the fault is upstream at the burner or the circulation pump. When one zone is cold and everything else works, it is that zone pump, that exchanger, or an air lock in that loop.

The diesel burner is the usual suspect on a no-heat call. Nozzles coke up, electrodes drift out of gap, the fuel filter loads with the debris every diesel tank eventually accumulates, and the photocell that proves flame gets sooty and stops seeing it. These are service items, not failures, and on a coach that sits most of the year in Yorba Linda or Riverside they go out of spec from disuse rather than from hours. Owners who only run the system in Big Bear or Mammoth in December find out then.

The glycol itself is the maintenance item nobody performs. Antifreeze in these systems has corrosion inhibitors that deplete over a few years, and once they are gone the loop starts eating the aluminum in the exchangers and the boiler tank from the inside. We test the fluid condition and the freeze point rather than looking at the color, because a loop that looks fine can be chemically exhausted. Replacing depleted glycol is inexpensive. Replacing a corroded boiler tank is not.

How we do it, step by step

  1. 01

    Fault pattern isolation

    We establish whether every zone is affected or only one. Everything cold points upstream at the burner or main pump. One zone cold points at that loop, its pump, or an air lock.

  2. 02

    Burner inspection and service

    Nozzle, electrodes, gap, fuel filter, and photocell inspected and serviced. Most no-fire complaints on a coach that sits are burner service items rather than component failures.

  3. 03

    Fluid testing

    Glycol tested for freeze point and inhibitor depletion. Exhausted fluid corrodes aluminum exchangers from the inside and the color of the coolant tells you nothing about it.

    Pump and zone verification

    Main circulation and each zone pump tested for flow, and loops purged of air. An air lock imitates a failed pump and it is far cheaper to fix.

    Exchanger and electric element check

    Domestic hot water exchanger checked for scale and the 120V element and its thermostat tested, since owners often run electric only and never notice the burner has failed.

  6. 06

    Repair and full system run

    After repair the system runs from cold through burner start, full loop temperature, and every zone, with domestic hot water verified at a fixture before delivery.

I have no heat and no hot water at once. What does that mean?

It means the fault is upstream of the distribution, at the burner, the main circulation pump, or the control board, because both functions draw from the same heated loop. If only one zone were failing you would still have hot water. That single observation narrows the diagnosis substantially before anything is opened.

Does the antifreeze in a hydronic system need changing?

Yes, and it is the most commonly skipped maintenance on these systems. The corrosion inhibitors deplete over a few years regardless of use, and once they are gone the loop attacks the aluminum exchangers and boiler tank internally. We test freeze point and inhibitor condition rather than judging by appearance, because exhausted fluid still looks normal.

Why does my burner lock out after a few seconds?

Most often the photocell that proves flame has sooted over and can no longer see the fire, so the control shuts down as designed. The other frequent causes are a coked nozzle, electrodes out of gap, or a loaded fuel filter starving the burner. All four are service items on a system that has sat unused.

Is hydronic heat better than a forced air furnace?

For a large coach, generally yes. It heats more evenly, runs far quieter, uses diesel instead of propane, preheats the engine on many installations, and produces continuous domestic hot water. The tradeoff is complexity and service cost. A single component failure affects the whole coach, and parts and access on these systems are not cheap.
