The short answer

A tool truck runs a fixed weekly route, so a day down is a day of accounts that do not get called on and do not reschedule. These units carry shelving loaded to the ceiling, which puts load on the rear axle and the floor structure, and most of the racking and E-track went in without engineering behind it.

What we see from this customer

A tool route is a calendar of accounts that expect you on a specific day. Miss a Tuesday in Fontana and those accounts buy from somebody else that week, and half of them do not add the order back the following Tuesday. That is the actual cost of downtime on these trucks, and it is why we ask for the route at intake. If we can sequence the work so the truck is out on your two heaviest days and back in for the light ones we will do it, but only when the scope genuinely divides. We will not pretend it does when it does not.

Load is the mechanism behind most of what fails on these trucks. Shelving stocked to the ceiling with steel puts weight high and rearward, which works the rear axle, the springs and the floor structure in a way a cargo van was not sold to do. The symptoms show up as a sagging rear end, a floor that has developed a dip under the heaviest bay, drawer slides that bind because the body is flexing, and racking uprights that have worked loose at their floor fasteners. Reattaching a loose upright to the same soft decking gets you the same phone call in six months.

Break-ins are the other reason these trucks come in, and the repair is not just a door skin. A pried rear door has usually distorted the frame and the latch geometry, so it closes and locks while resisting almost nothing. We correct the opening, reinforce the pry point, and improve hardware and hasps while it is apart. On the claim, tool inventory and racking are what carriers argue about, especially when the shelving was installed by a builder who is gone and no invoice exists. We photograph and itemize the racking, the E-track, the drawer systems and the mounting so it reads as equipment rather than a bare van.

The route is fixed and the accounts do not reschedule when I miss a day

Bring us the route and the days that carry the most volume. Where the scope genuinely divides we sequence around your heavy days. Where it does not, we say so, because a truck released half repaired to make a Tuesday is a truck that comes back twice.

Concern 02

The rear end sits low and the truck squats badly under a full load

Look at the load before you buy springs. Weight carried high and behind the axle overloads the rear long before the gross figure looks alarming. We inspect springs, shackles, bushings and hangers, correct what has actually failed, and tell you when moving heavy stock forward would do more than parts will.

Racking uprights have worked loose from the floor

The uprights are usually fine. The decking they are lagged into is not. We open the floor, replace the compromised substrate, and reinstall through backing so the load goes into structure instead of into plywood that has been working loose for six years.

Concern 04

Drawer slides bind and the drawers will not stay shut on the road

Binding slides are a body flex symptom on most of these trucks. When the box twists over a driveway apron the drawer opening goes out of square and the slide takes the load. We measure the opening, correct the structure, then look at the slide. Replacing slides in a racked opening buys a few months.

The rear doors were pried in a break-in and I do not trust the locks

A pried door almost always leaves distorted frame and latch geometry, so it latches without resisting a second attempt. We correct the opening, reinforce the pry point, and fit hardware appropriate to what is inside. We will also tell you where the next attempt is going to be made, because it is rarely the same door.

Nobody has paperwork for the shelving because the installer closed

Then the documentation gets created here. We photograph and itemize the racking, E-track, drawer systems, mounting and any installed equipment during disassembly. Carriers pay for what is documented as part of the loss. An undocumented upfit gets valued as an empty van every time.

Frequently asked questions

Can you repair the truck without pulling all the tools out?

Not usually, and it is worth planning for. Anything touching the floor, a wall panel, the rear opening or the suspension needs the load out to be done correctly, and we do not have secured storage for a truck full of inventory. Plan on offloading before drop-off. Small exterior panel and refinish work is the exception and can often be done with the truck loaded.

My rear suspension is sagging. Is that a spring problem?

It might be, and it might be that the truck is carrying more than the rear axle was rated for. Steel stock on ceiling height shelving puts weight high and behind the axle. We inspect springs, shackles, bushings and hangers and repair what has failed, but we will also tell you if the real fix is redistributing stock forward. We do not do engine or drivetrain work.

The rear doors were forced in a break-in. What does that repair involve?

More than a door skin. Prying distorts the door frame and the striker geometry, so the door still closes and locks while resisting almost nothing. We correct the opening, reinforce the pry point with plate where it makes sense, replace damaged hardware and refinish. If it is on a claim we photograph the distortion first, because a straightened door photographs like it was never touched.

Can you reinstall or upgrade the shelving while it is here?

Yes. Shelving, racking, E-track, D-rings and drawer systems are installed and reinstalled here, and if the floor is coming up anyway that is the cheapest hour you will ever spend on it. We fasten through backing into structure rather than into decking, and we look at weight distribution while the box is empty. That is the only time anyone actually can.

How should the floor be built to carry this much weight?

Through structure, not through plywood. Racking uprights and E-track need to land on framing or on backing that spreads the load into the floor structure, with sound decking underneath. What we usually find is lag screws into six year old plywood that has been taking road spray from below. Once the decking softens, the fastener holds nothing and the upright starts to walk.
