Inland valley

The short answer

OCRV Empire repairs RVs, camper vans, trailers, trucks, and fleet vehicles for Encino owners at the Yorba Linda facility, reached by the 101 and the 405. Encino sits in an inland valley band, so work arriving from here concentrates in roof to wall transition seam separation and sidewall and roof fastener backing out.

01

What inland valley conditions do to a vehicle in Encino

Encino owners tend to arrive with one of a short list of problems, and the list is not random. Hot dry summers, cool wet winters, and a daily swing that can cover forty degrees between afternoon and dawn. The swing is the real load, because every material on a coach expands on its own schedule and the joints between them absorb the difference.

The parked months, not the driven weeks, are when this damage accumulates. A Encino vehicle is working against unshaded asphalt storage radiating heat upward into the underside of the floor, and that load does not pause when the unit is parked. It accumulates through every month it sits, which is why this damage tends to announce itself at the start of a season rather than the end of one.

  • Unshaded asphalt storage radiating heat upward into the underside of the floor
  • Santa Ana wind events driving grit and putting loose debris into motion
  • Daily expansion and contraction cycling working sealed seams and mechanical joints loose
  • Summer afternoons routinely above 100 degrees with overnight lows forty degrees under that

Getting from Encino to the shop

Getting here from Encino means the 101 and 405, then east on the 91 to Weir Canyon. Two or three transitions depending on which way you come at it.

Two things worth knowing about this approach. First, the 101 through the valley and out to Ventura is long but well graded, with wind exposure past Camarillo. Second, the 405 is the single most congested corridor in the region and worth routing around entirely.

Roughly 65 minutes outside peak hours, which puts Encino close to the San Fernando Valley median of about 65 minutes. A normal half day for a drop-off.

Encino to the shop runs the 101 and the 405, and it is most of a day round trip. Owners at this range treat drop-off as a scheduled event.

That distance is why the intake walk matters more here. We go through the whole vehicle at drop-off, because a second trip is expensive for you.

Lake Balboa, Mission Hills, and Sylmar sit at a comparable distance, and Lake Balboa and Mission Hills share the same conditions, so those units tend to arrive with the same problems Encino units do.

Covered storage is common in the valley and it pays for itself. The difference in sealant, decal, and tire life between a covered space and an open asphalt lot is measured in years here, because a shaded roof surface never reaches the temperature that drives the cycling in the first place. That is worth knowing before you schedule, because it changes what we look for the moment the unit arrives.

03

What actually fails on Encino vehicles

These are the 4 failures we see most often from this part of San Fernando Valley, in roughly the order they come through the door. None of them arrive suddenly. Each has a window where it is a small repair and a later point where it is not.

Roof to wall transition seam separation. The joint where the roof sheet turns down over the sidewall is the longest continuous seam on the vehicle and sees the most differential movement of any of them. Trim screws loosen, sealant under the trim hardens and cracks, and water enters at the top of the wall, where it runs the full length of the cavity before it stains anything visible.

Sidewall and roof fastener backing out. Screws driven into laminated wall stock and roof framing loosen a fraction at a time as the material around them cycles. It shows first as a raised trim strip or a head standing proud of a rub rail. Every loose fastener is an open hole into the wall structure with hardened sealant sitting over the top of it, and December rain finds all of them.

Decal edge lift and film fracture. Cast vinyl and the fiberglass under it grow at different rates, so the film sits in shear every afternoon. Edges release first at corners and at every cut around a door or window. Once an edge is standing, valley wind gets behind it and strips the panel in one event. Most owners trim the flap and lose the rest of the graphic the following summer.

LP regulator diaphragm and pigtail hose cracking. Rubber in the propane system dries fastest in this band because heat and low humidity work on it together. Pigtail hoses check at the crimp and the two stage regulator diaphragm stiffens, which shows up as appliances running rich, a furnace that will not hold flame, or a refrigerator that drops to gas and never relights. Rubber here is a service life item, not a permanent part.

04

Seasonal timing for Encino

Late April to early June. Prepare for heat before it arrives. Read the date code on every tire and replace anything over five or six years no matter how the tread looks. Check and top flooded batteries, then confirm the converter is temperature compensating. Cover or shade the unit if a covered space is not available, and vent the battery compartment.

July and August. This is peak cycling, so do not defer anything that is already moving. Inspect roof vent lids and skylight domes for brittleness by flexing a corner, since these fail during the fall wind rather than during the heat that ruined them. Check that the slide runs square and true, and stop cycling any room that hesitates on one side.

Encino in the context of San Fernando Valley

28 of the 29 San Fernando Valley cities we serve sit in the inland valley band, Encino among them, so this is the dominant pattern across the county.

Across all of Southern California we serve 96 cities in this band. What they have in common is not geography, it is what the environment does to a vehicle left sitting in it, and that is what makes the Encino failure pattern predictable enough to plan maintenance around.

San Fernando Valley is not one environment, which is why a Encino unit and one from the far side of the same county frequently arrive with nothing in common. The county page covers how that splits.

Encino questions

Frequently asked questions

What should I check on my own before calling?

Look for roof to wall transition seam separation first, since that is what this environment produces most. Then walk the roof penetrations and every seal. Photograph anything you find, dated, from more than one angle. That habit is what makes a claim payable later.

What does an estimate cost for a Encino customer?

The same as for anyone else. A collision estimate fee applies and is refundable as a credit against an authorized repair. An RV systems estimate covering slides, awnings, water, electrical, or generator is $150. Diagnostic time is $285 per hour with a one hour minimum, refundable the same way.

Do you serve Encino?

Yes. Encino customers reach us by the 101 and the 405. All work is performed at the Yorba Linda facility at 23281 La Palma Ave. We do not run mobile, on-site, or route service, so the vehicle comes to the shop.

Do you handle insurance claims for Encino customers?

Yes. We work direct with Progressive, GEICO, State Farm, AAA SoCal, AAA Enterprises, Mercury, and others. We write the supplement, submit the photographs, and handle the negotiation. Insurance billed jobs may be billed at carrier negotiated rates that differ from posted retail rates.

Is it worth the drive from Encino?

That depends on whether the work can be done properly closer to you. Large format paint, laminated structural repair, riveted shell work, and frame correction on oversized units are a short list of capabilities in this region. If the job is a simple one, a closer shop may serve you fine, and we will tell you that.
