What Happens During Teardown and Why It Changes the Estimate

The short answer

The first estimate is written from what is visible, and on a laminated RV that is a fraction of the actual damage. Teardown removes trim, interior panel, and exterior skin in sequence so the load path can be read directly, then every finding is photographed and submitted as a supplement before anything structural is cut.

The First Number Is Provisional and We Say So Out Loud

An estimate written before disassembly on a laminated coach is a description of the visible damage plus an experienced guess at what is behind it. That is not a criticism of the estimator. It is a limitation of the material. A bonded sandwich panel hides its own failures, because the outer fiberglass skin is thin, flexible, and bonded to a substrate that can be entirely separated behind an outer surface that still looks continuous.

The numbers move in one direction. On a laminated structure, the damage found after opening a wall is larger than the damage visible before, essentially every time. A crack in a front cap sits above separated laminate that extends several feet in each direction. A corner strike in a parking structure in downtown Los Angeles racks the cage a quarter inch, which no photograph will ever show. We tell owners at intake that the first figure is a floor, and we would rather say that than have the conversation later.

What this means practically is that the decision worth making early is not whether to accept the first estimate. It is whether to authorize teardown, because teardown is what converts a guess into a documented scope that a carrier can act on.

Stage One: Trim, Fasteners, and What They Tell Us Before Anything Comes Off

Teardown starts with the least invasive layer. Corner moldings, drip rails, awning rails, light housings, and the screw lines that hold them. This stage is quick and it is more informative than it sounds, because fasteners record what the structure did during the impact. Screws backed partly out of a rail mean the substrate behind them moved. Screws that will not back out at all, or that spin without withdrawing, mean the material they thread into has failed and is no longer holding.

Sealant behavior at this stage is evidence too. A bead that has torn cleanly across rather than aged and cracked indicates a sudden movement rather than gradual fatigue, and that distinction matters on the claim. We photograph the sealant condition at every removed trim piece before it is cleaned off, because once the surface is prepped the evidence is gone permanently.

Everything removed is bagged and labeled by location. That sounds like housekeeping. It is documentation, because the parts list on the supplement has to reflect which specific pieces were damaged during the loss rather than which pieces broke coming off, and the only way to keep that straight across a job that runs months is to be disciplined at the start.

Stage Two: The Interior Panel and the Story It Tells

Pulling the interior panel is often the fastest route to understanding a laminated wall, and it is the one owners least expect. From inside we can see the framing directly, whether that is aluminum tube or wood studs, and we can read exactly what happened to it. Aluminum tube that has buckled shows a crease. Wood framing that has failed shows a split along the grain. Both are invisible from the exterior at any level of inspection.

This is also where water history surfaces. Staining on the back face of the interior panel maps where moisture traveled, and that map frequently has nothing to do with where the impact was. On a coach that came in for a rear corner strike, we will regularly find an unrelated slide seal failure that has been wetting a wall cavity for two seasons. That finding is not part of the collision claim and we say so clearly, because mixing a covered loss with a pre-existing maintenance failure is the fastest way to get an entire supplement rejected.

The interior panel stage is also where insulation condition gets recorded. Compressed insulation indicates the wall cavity closed up under load, which is a structural finding even when the framing looks acceptable. Wet insulation indicates a moisture path. Both go into the file with photographs before anything is removed.

  • Framing member condition, meaning buckles, creases, splits, and separated joints
  • Adhesive bond condition where the substrate meets the framing
  • Water staining direction and extent on the back face of the panel
  • Insulation compression, which shows the cavity closed under load
  • Wiring, plumbing, and LP lines routed through the damage zone
  • Any prior repair, which changes both the method and the claim conversation

Stage Three: Exterior Skin and the Real Extent of Separation

Taking the exterior skin off is the point at which the actual size of a delamination becomes known. Before removal we map it with tap testing and raking light, and that map is usually accurate to within a foot. After removal we can see the adhesive failure directly: where the bond released cleanly, where it tore the substrate face, and where it is still holding. Those three conditions require different repair approaches and cannot be distinguished from outside.

Substrate condition is the decision point for the whole job. Luan or similar substrate that is dry, firm, and intact can be re-bonded. Substrate that has gone soft, and it goes soft from moisture rather than from impact, will not hold an injected bond no matter how good the resin is, and the honest answer is that the skin has to come off and the substrate has to be replaced. This is where a cheaper method gets ruled out on evidence rather than on opinion.

Skin removal on aluminum construction reveals a different set of problems, mainly fastener condition. On a coastal unit out of Oceanside or Ventura, we routinely find that the panel was being held on by fasteners that had lost most of their cross section to galvanic corrosion, and that the impact only finished a process that had been running for years.

Stage Four: Structure Under Load, Measured Rather Than Eyeballed

With the skin off, the structure gets measured against its designed geometry. On a motorhome that means treating the chassis and the cage as two separate things, because they fail separately. A chassis rail bends and that is measurable in a straightforward way. A cage racks, meaning it goes out of square without any single member visibly bending, and racking is the finding that explains why a slide binds and a door will not latch after an impact that looked cosmetic.

On trailers the measurement usually confirms something different. Frame damage on a fifth wheel or a travel trailer is more often accumulated load and flex than impact, with cracks forming at stress risers where suspension hangers meet the rail. When a trailer comes in for a collision and we find hanger cracks, those cracks predate the event and they are not part of the claim, but the owner needs to know about them and we are not going to close the unit up over them without saying so.

This is also the stage where the repair method gets locked in. Straighten or section. Re-bond or replace the panel. Repair the cap or replace it. Every one of those is a fork with a different price and a different timeline, and every one of them should be decided with the structure visible rather than inferred from a photograph of the outside.

Photographs Are Not Documentation of the Work, They Are the Supplement

An adjuster is not going to stand in our building. The entire basis on which additional damage gets approved is the photographic record produced during teardown, and a supplement supported by clear sequential images approves at a rate that a written description alone never approaches. This is why the photography is methodical rather than incidental.

Each finding gets a wide shot establishing its location on the vehicle, a mid shot showing the damage in the context of the surrounding structure, and a detail shot with a scale reference in frame. Where a measurement is the finding, the measuring tool is photographed in place showing the reading. Where a component was removed to reveal something, we photograph before removal, during, and after, so the sequence is unbroken and there is no gap for anyone to question.

The practical effect is that the conversation with the carrier stops being an argument about opinion. A photograph of separated laminate extending four feet past the visible crack, with a tape in the frame, is not a position that requires defending. It is a fact, and adjusters approve facts considerably faster than they approve assertions.

Authorization, Deposits, and What Does Not Get Cut

Teardown itself is authorized work with its own price, because it consumes real labor at $210 per hour and it frequently destroys single-use trim and sealant in the process. Owners approve it before it begins and understand what it will cost. On jobs over $2,000 we take a 50 percent deposit, with a further 25 percent at parts arrival, and there is a 3.5 percent surcharge on card payments over $1,000.

Nothing structural gets cut until the supplement is authorized in writing. Not a frame rail, not a cage member, not a section of skin beyond what teardown required. This is a firm boundary and it exists for a practical reason: once a structural member has been cut, the evidence of its original condition is gone, and if a carrier later disputes the necessity there is nothing left to demonstrate it. Teardown documents. Authorization precedes cutting. That order does not vary.

Between those two events the unit sits, and that waiting period is genuinely part of the timeline. Owners sometimes ask us to start anyway to save time. We will not, because a coach with an unauthorized structural repair half completed is a considerably worse position for the owner than a coach sitting intact with a documented file.

If the Carrier Declines the Supplement

It happens, and it is not the end of the process. The most common outcome after an initial decline is a reinspection, where the carrier sends an adjuster or an independent appraiser to look at the unit with the structure open. That reinspection is precisely why we do not close anything up while a supplement is pending. A coach that has been reassembled cannot be reinspected, and at that point the owner has lost the argument by default.

When a decline holds, the owner has real options and we lay them out plainly. Repair the approved scope only and leave the disputed portion, which we will document as unrepaired so it is on record for any future claim or sale. Pay for the disputed portion directly, which some owners choose when the amount is modest against the disruption of a fight. Or pursue the disagreement through the appraisal provision in the policy, which most policies contain and few owners know about.

What we will not do is quietly reduce the repair to fit an approved number and hand the coach back looking finished. A sidewall hung on a structure that was never corrected will telegraph within a season, usually during the first sustained heat in July, and the owner will be told at that point that it is a new problem. It is not. All of this work happens at our Yorba Linda facility, and the file stays with the unit.

A contained cap or corner job is usually one to three days of teardown. A full sidewall with interior panel removal, cabinetry out, and structural measurement runs one to two weeks. What follows that is not shop time at all, it is waiting for the carrier to review the supplement, and that period varies far more than the teardown itself does.

Can you just give me a firm price without tearing it down?

Not an honest one on a laminated structure. We can give you the visible-damage figure and tell you it is a floor. Any shop that hands you a firm total on a bonded sidewall before opening it is guessing, and the guess will be resolved later either by absorbing a loss or by cutting scope out of your repair. Neither of those outcomes favors the owner.

Will you find damage that is not related to my accident?
