How Long Does RV Collision Repair Actually Take

The short answer

Minor cap and panel repair runs two to three weeks. Mid-size structural work runs six to twelve weeks. Major structural repair with supplements and discontinued parts runs three to six months. Carrier approval time and parts availability account for most of the variance between those ranges, not how fast a shop works.

Three Real Ranges and What Puts a Job in Each

The ranges are wide because the jobs are genuinely different, not because shops are vague. A minor job means contained damage that does not reach structure: a cracked fiberglass cap, a bumper, a scraped sidewall panel, a clipped awning arm. Two to three weeks, most of which is paint scheduling and cure rather than repair. A mid-size job means the structure is involved but the repair is defined: a section of sidewall, a delaminated panel with sound substrate, a cage member corrected. Six to twelve weeks.

A major job means the structure is compromised across an area, multiple systems are involved, and there will be more than one supplement. Three to six months. This is the range that shocks owners, and the honest framing is that very little of it is labor. On a six month job, actual hands-on repair time might account for six to ten weeks. The rest is approval cycles, parts, and cure.

Where a specific unit lands is usually clear within a day or two of teardown and not before. The variable that moves a job from one range to the next is almost never the size of the visible damage. It is whether the load path was interrupted, because once structure is involved every subsequent step depends on a step before it, and the sequence cannot be compressed by adding people.

  • Two to three weeks: contained cap crack, bumper, single panel scuff, awning arm, no structure involved
  • Six to twelve weeks: sidewall section, contained delamination with sound substrate, single cage member correction
  • Three to six months: multi-area structural damage, multiple supplements, discontinued parts, full repaint

Driver One: The Approval Clock, Which Nobody in the Shop Controls

Between submitting a supplement and receiving a decision, the vehicle sits. That interval is the single largest source of variance in RV collision timelines and it is entirely outside a shop schedule. A carrier with a dedicated specialty vehicle desk may turn a photographed supplement in three to five business days. A carrier routing an RV supplement through an auto adjuster who has never priced a laminated sidewall may take three weeks and then request a reinspection, which adds another two.

Reinspections are the other timing factor owners do not anticipate. When an adjuster or independent appraiser needs to see the unit with the structure open, that appointment is scheduled around their availability, not ours. The coach cannot be worked on and cannot be reassembled while it waits, because reassembling it destroys the thing they are coming to look at.

The realistic planning assumption is one to three weeks per supplement cycle, and a major structural job will have two or three cycles. That is four to nine weeks of calendar time on a job where nobody is doing anything wrong. Building that into your expectations from the start is more useful than discovering it in month two.

Driver Two: A Part That Is Not Made Anymore

RV manufacturers change suppliers, revise molds, and discontinue models on a cadence that has no relationship to how long the vehicles stay on the road. A front cap for a coach built eight years ago may simply not exist as a part, and no amount of urgency changes that. When the part exists but is built to order, which is normal for molded caps and large panels, lead times of eight to sixteen weeks are ordinary and are the entire critical path for the job.

When a part does not exist, there are two options and both cost time. Fabricate it, which we do routinely on aluminum panels and on vintage units, or repair the existing component to a standard that lets it stay on the vehicle. Both are frequently better outcomes than waiting for a part that will never arrive, and both need to be decided early rather than after twelve weeks of a supplier saying next month.

Graphics deserve their own mention because they surprise people. Most factory graphics schemes older than a few years are discontinued as decals, so the scheme gets reproduced in paint. That is more masking, more color changes, and more cure cycles than the underlying body repair, and on a multi-color scheme across a full sidewall it can add two to six weeks to a job that was otherwise finished.

  • Molded caps and large one-piece panels are usually built to order at eight to sixteen weeks
  • Discontinued components on units older than roughly eight years frequently do not exist at all
  • Aluminum panels and vintage components can be fabricated in house, which trades wait time for labor
  • Discontinued graphics schemes are reproduced in paint, adding two to six weeks
  • Slide mechanism and leveling components can carry long lead times independent of the body work

Paint Cure Sets a Floor No Shop Can Beat

Refinish work has a chemistry clock that is not negotiable. Modern two-component urethane clear cross-links over time, and while it is dry to the touch quickly and can be handled after a bake cycle, it continues to harden for days. Cutting and buffing before the film has developed enough hardness leaves swirl marks that reappear as the coat continues to shrink. Reassembling too early leaves impressions from trim and gaskets in the surface permanently.

On a coach with multiple colors and a reproduced graphics scheme, every color change is a masking cycle, a spray cycle, and a cure cycle, and they are sequential by definition. A four color scheme is not four times the paint labor, it is four times the sequence, and each cycle occupies a booth for a day. Compressing that is how you get a finish that looks correct at delivery and looks wrong after the first July in Riverside, when heat drives residual solvent out of an under-cured film.

This is the part of the timeline that owners push hardest against and the part that yields least. Everything else in a collision repair can absorb more people or more hours. Cure absorbs neither, and a shop willing to skip it is telling you something about the rest of its work.

Why a Schedule Given Before Teardown Is Not a Schedule

A completion date quoted at intake on a structural job is an estimate of an unknown quantity. Until the wall is open, nobody knows whether the substrate is sound, whether the cage is square, or whether a part will need to be ordered. Every one of those answers changes the schedule by weeks. A shop that gives a confident date on day one is either working on a job with no hidden variables, which is legitimate on a bumper, or it is telling you what you want to hear.

What we give at intake is a range and the reasons it is a range. What we give after teardown is a schedule with the parts lead times built in and the supplement cycles estimated, and that schedule is worth planning around. If a second supplement becomes necessary later, the schedule is revised and you are told when it happens, not at the end.

The corollary matters for anyone comparing shops. A shorter quoted timeline before teardown is not evidence of a faster shop. It is frequently evidence of a smaller assumed scope, and the scope will grow once the wall is open regardless of what anyone assumed.

What an Owner Can Actually Do To Take Weeks Off

Owners have more influence on this timeline than they generally realize, and almost all of it is exercised in the first two weeks. Authorizing teardown promptly is the highest leverage single decision, because nothing downstream can be scheduled until the real scope is known and every day of delay is a day added to the end, not absorbed somewhere in the middle.

The second lever is information. A claim number, the adjuster name and direct contact, and the policy details at intake let us open the supplement conversation immediately rather than after a week of tracking someone down. The third is decisiveness on anything the carrier will not cover. Upgrades, pre-existing conditions found during teardown, and modifications that were never documented all require an owner decision, and the vehicle waits during that decision the same way it waits for a carrier.

The fourth is documentation you may already have. The paint code, the original graphics artwork if you have it, receipts for aftermarket solar or a lift or custom bumpers, and photographs of the coach before the loss. Every one of those removes a step that otherwise involves research, and research is measured in days.

  • Authorize teardown as early as possible, since nothing downstream can be scheduled without it

  • Decide quickly on anything the carrier declines, because the unit waits on that decision
  • Supply the paint code and any graphics artwork or vendor files you have

Seasonal Loading and Why a March Booking Runs Longer

Southern California RV repair is seasonal in a way that affects your calendar. February through May is the heaviest intake period, because owners pull units out of storage for the first trip of the year and discover what the winter did. That is when spring pressurization reveals freeze splits from Big Bear and Wrightwood, when snow load damage on mountain-stored coaches shows up as a spring leak, and when everyone who postponed a repair in November decides they need it before Memorial Day.

October through December brings a different wave, driven by Santa Ana wind events across the inland valleys tearing awnings and driving debris into roofs and sidewalls, followed by hail out of the high desert. Those tend to be faster jobs individually but they arrive in clusters after a single weather event, which loads the schedule all at once.

The quiet windows are roughly January and mid-summer, when the low desert heat has everyone parked. A structural job started in July generally moves through the shop faster than the same job started in March, purely because of what is ahead of it. If your repair is not urgent and the timing is yours to choose, that difference is real and it is worth a few weeks.

What Is Not in Our Building, and What That Adds

We do not perform engine, drivetrain, or transmission work, and we do not perform DOT inspections. On a collision where the chassis mechanicals were also damaged, that portion goes to a chassis or truck shop, and the two repairs have to be sequenced rather than run in parallel. Structural correction generally has to happen before chassis mechanical work is finalized, since ride height and mounting geometry change during correction, so plan on those being consecutive rather than concurrent.

What we do handle in house includes structural welding and fabrication, laminated and aluminum panel work, fiberglass cap repair and replacement, paint and graphics reproduction, ADAS scan and recalibration, and the brake, axle, bearing, and suspension work that trailers and vans need. Keeping structural work in the building matters for the timeline as much as for the quality, because subcontracted structural work introduces another schedule you do not control.

All work is performed at our Yorba Linda facility, and the shop is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Drop-off and pickup scheduling around those hours is worth planning, particularly for owners coming from Palm Desert, Victorville, or Bakersfield who are making a long one-way drive with a damaged unit.

Why does RV collision repair take so much longer than car repair?

Three reasons. Laminated construction hides damage, so the scope is not known until teardown, while a car body panel is visible and quantifiable immediately. And RV supplements often route through adjusters who handle mostly automobiles and need longer to review structural findings on a bonded sandwich panel.

Can you give me a completion date when I drop the unit off?

On a contained job with no structure involved, yes. On anything structural, no, and a shop that does is guessing. What is actually taking the time on a six month repair?

Not labor, mostly. On a six month structural job, hands-on repair time is typically six to ten weeks. The rest is supplement approval cycles at one to three weeks each, parts lead times of eight to sixteen weeks on molded caps and large panels, paint cure between color cycles, and reinspection appointments scheduled around adjuster availability rather than shop availability.

Can I pay to have my repair expedited?

Some of it, and not the parts that matter most. We cannot accelerate a carrier approval, a built-to-order cap, or urethane cross-linking, and those three account for the majority of a long timeline. Where scheduling flexibility exists we will use it, but the honest answer is that the constraints on an RV structural repair are mostly external and money does not move them.

Should I schedule my repair for a particular time of year?
