Hail Damage Claims on RV Roofs and Fifth Wheels

The short answer
Hail on an EPDM or TPO membrane roof usually leaves bruising rather than punctures, so the damage reads as nothing from the ground and shows clearly under raking light. Aluminum roofs dent, fiberglass caps crack, and AC shrouds and vent covers shatter. It is comprehensive coverage, often with a separate wind and hail deductible.

Bruising Is What Hail Does To a Membrane, and It Reads As Nothing
A rubber or TPO roof does not usually get holed by hail. It gets bruised. The stone compresses the membrane against the decking hard enough to crush the fibers or the backing beneath the surface, leaving a soft circular area that has lost its structural integrity without opening. From a ladder at midday it can be genuinely invisible. Six months later it splits at the bruise and the owner reports a leak with no idea a storm caused it.
This is why hail claims on RVs are handled badly so often. The owner looks, sees no holes, and does not file. The adjuster looks, sees no holes, and closes the file. The physical evidence exists the entire time and requires a specific survey method to see, which almost nobody applies to an RV roof because the training and the tooling came from residential shingle work.
High desert owners in Victorville, Hesperia, Apple Valley, Lancaster, Palmdale and Barstow are the ones this affects most. Elevation stacks UV load on top of desert heat, which leaves the membrane already brittle when the hail arrives, and a brittle membrane bruises deeper and splits sooner.

What Hail Does To Everything Else on the Roof
The membrane is the subtle part. The rest of the roof records the same storm in ways that are much easier to see, and those items are frequently what establishes that a hail event happened at all. Rooftop AC shrouds are thin thermoformed plastic that has spent years baking, and they crack or shatter outright. Vent covers and skylight domes do the same. Aluminum roofs and aluminum sidewall panels take visible dimpling.
Fiberglass caps crack, sometimes with a hairline that only shows when light rakes across it at an angle. Antennas, solar panel frames, ladder mounts and roof racks record strikes as well. Together these are the corroborating evidence set for a membrane bruising claim, and photographing them thoroughly is what keeps the claim from turning into one persons word against another.

The Chalk Line and Raking Light Survey
The method that finds membrane bruising is not complicated, it is just methodical. The roof gets divided into test squares, commonly ten feet by ten feet, marked out with chalk. Each square is then surveyed at a low angle with a raking light source, early morning or late afternoon sun works, or a work light held low. Bruises appear as shallow circular depressions that catch shadow. Each hit inside a square is marked and counted.
Counting matters because carriers evaluate hail by density. A documented count of impacts per square is the number that supports a full roof replacement rather than a spot repair, and it is the language adjusters already use from residential work. Photograph each marked square with the chalk visible so the count in the report ties to an image.
Bruises also get confirmed by touch. A bruised area feels different under a flat hand than sound membrane does, slightly soft, sometimes with a faint crunch from crushed backing. Do this from proper roof support. Walking an unsupported RV roof between rafters is an excellent way to create damage that was not there.

Establishing Date of Loss With Storm Data
Every hail claim eventually turns on when it happened, and memory is not evidence. The NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information Storm Events Database records hail reports by county and date, including estimated stone size. Look up the county where the unit was stored or parked, find the events in the relevant window, and put the specific date and reported stone size in your claim notice.
Stone size matters to the technical argument. Impacts consistent with three quarter inch stones look different from impacts consistent with an inch and a half, and a documented event with a matching size supports a survey finding in a way a general assertion cannot. If the unit was in storage in Barstow while you were at home in Irvine, the storage location county is the one to search.
Where possible, tie the date to something else in the record: a storage facility log, a photograph with metadata, a fuel receipt near the site. Carriers are much slower to dispute a date that is corroborated by an unrelated document.

Why Late Hail Claims Get Fought and How To Answer
The most common carrier position on hail is that the reporting was too late, or that the damage cannot be tied to the storm being claimed. Owners who store a unit and use it twice a year are the natural targets for this, and it is exactly the pattern across the high desert. Ten months can pass between the event and the first close look at the roof.
The answer is a specific storm date from the record, a survey that documents impact density and direction, and physical evidence that the damage is impact-caused rather than age-caused. Directionality helps a great deal. Hail arrives on a prevailing angle, so damage concentrates on one aspect of the roof and on the vertical surfaces facing that direction. Age-related deterioration does not do that. It appears uniformly, or worst where sun exposure and pooling are worst.

Comprehensive Coverage and the Separate Wind and Hail Deductible
Hail is a comprehensive loss, not collision, so your comprehensive deductible applies unless the policy carries something specific to wind and hail. Many RV policies do, and it is frequently a larger flat number or a percentage of the insured value. On a $95,000 fifth wheel a one percent wind and hail deductible is $950, and on a $220,000 coach it is $2,200.
Check the declarations page before filing, because the deductible determines whether a spot repair claim is worth opening at all. A survey that documents eleven bruises and two broken vent covers may total less than the deductible, in which case you fix it and move on. A survey that supports a full membrane replacement plus AC shrouds, caps and refinish is a different conversation entirely.

Matching, Partial Replacement, and the Fight That Follows
Carriers frequently approve a partial roof repair on a roof with scattered damage, and on an RV that position runs into a practical problem the residential model does not have. An RV membrane is a continuous sheet bonded to decking and terminated at every penetration and edge. Splicing new membrane into an aged sheet creates a seam where there was none, and that seam becomes the next failure point, typically at a termination bar or around an AC opening.
The counterargument is documented and technical rather than aesthetic. It rests on impact density across the full sheet, the age and condition of the remaining membrane, and the fact that termination hardware and sealant have to be disturbed across the entire roof to install a partial section anyway. When the labor to install a patch approaches the labor to install a full sheet, the economic argument does the work for you.
Aluminum sidewall panels raise a genuine matching issue as well. A replaced panel next to an oxidized panel does not match, and whether the carrier owes for adjacent panels varies by policy language. Get the position in writing before the panel is ordered.

Where the labor to patch approaches the labor to replace, that comparison is persuasive. Submit it as a written supplement with the survey attached.
Do cracked solar panels count as hail damage?
Yes, and they are routinely missed because the cells crack under the glass with no visible surface damage. Output has to be measured against the panel rating to prove the loss, so get a measured test done and put the numbers in the file. Photograph the panel frames as well, since frame dimpling corroborates that the array took strikes.
