The short answer

Cargo and ramp door service covers toy hauler ramp doors, roll-up cargo doors, cable and spring systems, hinges, and seals on trailers and box trucks. Work runs $400 to $5,500, or 2 to 22 hours at $210 per hour plus parts, with certified welding in house.

01

What this work actually involves

A toy hauler ramp door is a structural member when it is closed and a loading ramp when it is open, and those two jobs put very different loads through the same hinge line. The hinge on a ramp door runs the full width of the trailer and it carries the weight of whatever is being ridden or rolled up it. Once the hinge fasteners start to work, or the ramp deck itself begins to flex, the door stops sealing at the top when closed and it begins to twist under load when open. We inspect the hinge, the deck framing, and the trailer rear frame as one assembly because they fail together.

The cable and spring systems are the part that hurts people. Ramp door assist cables and the springs on roll-up doors store significant energy, and a corroded cable or a fatigued spring can let go with no warning. Coastal trailers and any unit stored outdoors accumulate corrosion at the cable ends and the pulley bearings first, since that is where water sits. We replace cables in pairs, inspect the drums and pulleys, and check the anchor points rather than just the visible cable run.

Roll-up doors on box trucks and cargo trailers fail in their own pattern. The panels themselves take dents from loading, the hinges between panels wear, the track gets bent at the curve, and the torsion spring loses balance so the door becomes heavy to lift. A roll-up that is out of balance also loads the counterbalance system continuously and will strip a drum or break a cable eventually. Restoring spring balance is part of the repair, not an optional adjustment.

Systems and brands we work on: Lippert.

Location: All work is performed at our Yorba Linda facility. We do not offer mobile, roadside, or fleet route service.

What the job includes

  • Toy hauler ramp door hinge line repair and certified weld reinforcement
  • Ramp deck framing repair and non-skid surface replacement
  • Assist cable, pulley, and anchor point replacement in matched pairs
  • Gas spring and torsion assist system service on ramp doors
  • Roll-up door panel replacement and dent repair
  • Roll-up track straightening, curve repair, and replacement
  • Torsion spring balance restoration and drum and cable replacement
  • Latch, cam lock, and rear locking bar service
  • Perimeter and threshold seal replacement to stop water and dust entry
  • Rear frame and header repair where the door load has cracked the structure

03

When you need this service

  • A ramp door that no longer seals at the top when closed
  • Visible flex or twist in the ramp when a vehicle is driven up it
  • Fraying, kinking, or corrosion visible on an assist cable
  • A roll-up door that has become heavy to lift or will not stay up
  • Bent track, particularly at the curve where the door transitions overhead
  • Cracked paint or a visible crack at the rear frame near the hinge line
  • Dust or water entering along the ramp threshold after a trip

04

How we do it, step by step

  1. 01

    Assembly inspection

Door, hinge line, deck framing, and rear trailer frame inspected together, since a ramp door problem is frequently a rear frame problem showing itself at the door.

  2. 02

    Cable and spring safety check

Cables, pulleys, anchors, and springs inspected under controlled conditions. These systems store real energy and a corroded cable end is a failure waiting for a load.

  3. 03

    Balance and operation measurement

Roll-up doors checked for balance through their travel. A door that is heavy to lift is out of balance and is loading the counterbalance system continuously.

  4. 04

    Documented findings

Photographed findings priced, with structural repair separated clearly from hardware replacement so you know what is safety-critical and what is convenience.

  5. 05

    Structural repair

Cracked hinge lines, rear frame members, and headers repaired by certified in-shop welding with reinforcement where the original detail was the failure point.

  6. 06

    Hardware and seal replacement

Cables and springs replaced in matched sets, tracks straightened or replaced, latches serviced, and perimeter and threshold seals renewed.

  7. 07

    Load test and verification

Ramp loaded and observed for flex, roll-up cycled through full travel and checked for balance, and the closed door checked for even seal contact.

Questions about cargo, ramp and roll-up door service

Frequently asked questions

How much does toy hauler ramp door repair cost?

Cargo and ramp door work runs $400 to $5,500, or 2 to 22 hours at $210 per hour plus parts. Replacing assist cables and a threshold seal sits near the low end. Certified weld repair of a cracked hinge line and rear frame, ramp deck reframing, and a full cable and spring replacement sits at the high end.

My ramp door no longer seals at the top. What causes that?

Usually the hinge line or the rear frame has moved. A ramp door is structural when closed, and once the hinge fasteners work loose or the rear header cracks, the door geometry changes and the top gap opens. Adjusting the latches pulls the bottom tight and makes the top worse. The structure has to be corrected first.

Are ramp door cables a safety item?

Yes, seriously so. Assist cables and torsion springs store significant energy, and a corroded cable end or a fatigued spring can release without warning while someone is under the door. Corrosion starts at the cable ends and the pulley bearings, which is exactly where you cannot see it. We replace cables in matched pairs and inspect anchors, not just the visible run.

Why has my roll-up door become hard to lift?

The torsion spring has lost balance. As the spring fatigues it stops counterbalancing the door weight, so the door feels heavier and no longer stays up. That imbalance also loads the drums and cables continuously and eventually strips a drum or breaks a cable. Restoring spring balance is part of the repair rather than an optional adjustment.

Do you weld cracked rear frames on toy haulers?

Yes, all structural welding is performed in the shop by certified technicians. Rear frame and header cracks at the ramp hinge line are one of the more common structural findings on loaded toy haulers, and the correct repair usually includes reinforcement rather than simply restoring the original weld detail that failed.
