How-To and Diagnosis

The short answer

Diagnostic procedure you can run yourself before spending money: how to inspect a roof without cracking it, how to trace a 12-volt fault to the connection rather than the component, and why a rooftop air conditioner stops cooling in July when the compressor is fine.

About this category

A large share of what gets replaced on recreational vehicles did not need replacing. Air conditioners get condemned for a dirty evaporator coil, converters get replaced when the actual fault is a corroded ground stud behind the paint on a chassis rail, and roofs get recoated over decking that was already soft. Diagnosis is cheaper than parts, and in most of these cases it is something an owner can do a meaningful part of. These articles give the procedure in order, with the reasoning for the order. Where the next step requires equipment or access an owner does not have, we say so rather than pretending otherwise. Diagnostic time here is billed at $285 per hour with a one hour minimum, refundable as a credit against an authorized repair, which is exactly why we would rather you eliminate the easy causes first.
