The short answer
OCRV Empire repairs RVs, camper vans, trailers, trucks, and fleet vehicles for Coronado owners at the Yorba Linda facility, reached by the 5 and the 75. Coronado sits in a coastal band, so work arriving from here concentrates in wheel bearing race pitting from hub condensation and frame outrigger and undercarriage section loss.
01
What coastal conditions do to a vehicle in Coronado
Most Coronado work that reaches this shop arrives with a problem the owner first noticed months after it started. Marine air pushes salt inland every night and none of it rinses off on its own. It settles into seams, fastener heads, hinge pins, and anywhere a coating has already thinned, then works underneath the surface while the vehicle sits.
Where the vehicle sits between trips matters more than most owners expect. A Coronado vehicle is working against onshore breeze carrying salt into vents, condenser coils, and open compartment interiors, and that load does not pause when the unit is parked. It accumulates through every month it sits, which is why this damage tends to announce itself at the start of a season rather than the end of one.
- Onshore breeze carrying salt into vents, condenser coils, and open compartment interiors
- Humidity swinging from near saturation at dawn to dry by mid afternoon
- Wind-driven beach sand cutting coatings on the seaward face of the vehicle
02
What actually fails on Coronado vehicles
These are the 3 failures we see most often from this part of San Diego County, in roughly the order they come through the door. None of them arrive suddenly. Each has a window where it is a small repair and a later point where it is not.
Wheel bearing race pitting from hub condensation. A trailer parked four months goes through daily heat and cool cycles that breathe moist air past the seal lip. Water condenses on the cold race and etches it. The grease looks fine when the hub comes off, and the race carries fine gray pitting that will chew a new bearing inside a few hundred miles. Dexter and AL-KO hubs both do this.
Frame outrigger and undercarriage section loss. The steel below the floor never fully dries out in this band. Damp carrying chloride sits on outriggers, crossmembers, and the top flange of the main rails where nobody looks. Loss starts at the welds and the factory coating flakes away in sheets. A rail that has given up a third of its web is structural work, and it usually surfaces during an unrelated tank job.
Rooftop air conditioner condenser corrosion. Salt lands on the condenser coil every night the unit sits under open sky. Aluminum fins powder and separate from the copper tube, so the coil loses the surface area it needs to reject heat. A Coleman or Dometic compressor then runs long, draws high, and stalls on a hot afternoon. The complaint sounds electrical and the cause is corrosion.

Seasonal timing for Coronado
May through June. This is the longest damp stretch of the coastal year and the worst possible time to leave a unit sealed up. Crack roof vents, put a small fan on a timer, and prop cabinet doors on outside walls so air moves behind them. Interior condensation through the gray months is what turns a slow window leak into a mold complaint.
Late September to early November. Reseal every roof penetration ahead of the first storm cycle. Salt drives lap sealant past its useful elasticity well before the interval printed in the owner manual, so judge it by feel rather than by date. Press the edge of each bead with a thumbnail. If it has gone hard or lifted at the substrate, cut it out and rebed instead of skimming over it.

Getting from Coronado to the shop
Getting here from Coronado means the 5 and 75, then east on the 91 to Weir Canyon. Two or three transitions depending on which way you come at it.
Two things worth knowing about this approach. First, the 5 through the basin is heavy at almost any hour, and the truck lanes are where an oversized unit belongs. Second, the 75 across the Coronado bridge has its own clearance and wind considerations.
Roughly 95 minutes outside peak hours, which puts Coronado close to the San Diego County median of about 85 minutes. A normal half day for a drop-off.
From Coronado the route is the 5 and the 75 and it eats a day. Nobody does this drive twice by choice, so we work to make the first visit the only one.
Communication after drop-off is by photograph. You will see what we found rather than hearing a description of it, which matters when you cannot walk out to the shop.
Chula Vista, National City, and El Cajon sit at a comparable distance, and Chula Vista and National City share the same conditions, so those units tend to arrive with the same problems Coronado units do.
Most coastal storage is uncovered or under open canopy, so salt keeps depositing around the clock whether or not the vehicle has moved in months. Distance from the water matters less than air movement across the lot, and a unit parked in a low corner where fog settles corrodes faster than one two blocks closer to the sand. That is worth knowing before you schedule, because it changes what we look for the moment the unit arrives.

Coronado in the context of San Diego County
San Diego County splits across 2 distinct environments. Coronado is one of 10 in the coastal band, which means a unit from the other side of the same county can arrive needing entirely different work.
Across all of Southern California we serve 33 cities in this band. What they have in common is not geography, it is what the environment does to a vehicle left sitting in it, and that is what makes the Coronado failure pattern predictable enough to plan maintenance around.
San Diego County is not one environment, which is why a Coronado unit and one from the far side of the same county frequently arrive with nothing in common. The county page covers how that splits.

Coronado questions
Frequently asked questions
What does an estimate cost for a Coronado customer?
The same as for anyone else. A collision estimate fee applies and is refundable as a credit against an authorized repair. An RV systems estimate covering slides, awnings, water, electrical, or generator is $150. Diagnostic time is $285 per hour with a one hour minimum, refundable the same way.
When should a Coronado owner bring a vehicle in?
May through June. This is the longest damp stretch of the coastal year and the worst possible time to leave a unit sealed up. Crack roof vents, put a small fan on a timer, and prop cabinet doors on outside walls so air moves behind them. Interior condensation through the gray months is what turns a slow window leak into a mold complaint.
Is it worth the drive from Coronado?
That depends on whether the work can be done properly closer to you. Large format paint, laminated structural repair, riveted shell work, and frame correction on oversized units are a short list of capabilities in this region. If the job is a simple one, a closer shop may serve you fine, and we will tell you that.
What should I check on my own before calling?
Look for wheel bearing race pitting from hub condensation first, since that is what this environment produces most. Then walk the roof penetrations and every seal. Photograph anything you find, dated, from more than one angle. That habit is what makes a claim payable later.
Do you handle insurance claims for Coronado customers?
Yes. We work direct with Progressive, GEICO, State Farm, AAA SoCal, AAA Enterprises, Mercury, and others. We write the supplement, submit the photographs, and handle the negotiation. Insurance billed jobs may be billed at carrier negotiated rates that differ from posted retail rates.
