Thread rots ahead of the fabric, so the hem lets go, the topper unrolls crooked, wraps the roller, and tears itself apart. Rolling a wet topper away before storage is what starts the whole sequence.

Compartment door hinge and latch seizure. Continental hinges and slam latches on baggage doors run steel pins inside aluminum extrusions. Salt gets into the pin, the mechanism binds, and owners force it. Either the hinge tears out of the door skin or the latch pawl snaps, and the door then sits proud of the sidewall where the gasket has nothing to compress against.

Getting here from Laguna Niguel means the 5 and 73, then east on the 91 to Weir Canyon. Two or three transitions depending on which way you come at it.

Two things worth knowing about this approach. First, the 5 through the basin is heavy at almost any hour, and the truck lanes are where an oversized unit belongs. Second, the 73 is a toll road, which is often worth it for an oversized unit avoiding the 405.

May through June. This is the longest damp stretch of the coastal year and the worst possible time to leave a unit sealed up. Crack roof vents, put a small fan on a timer, and prop cabinet doors on outside walls so air moves behind them. Interior condensation through the gray months is what turns a slow window leak into a mold complaint.
