Coastal Salt Air and What It Does to Your RV

The short answer
The marine layer deposits salt on your RV every night and it does not evaporate away with the moisture. It stays, absorbs humidity, and drives galvanic corrosion between steel fasteners and aluminum panels. Rinse discipline and a coating are the only two defenses that meaningfully change the outcome.

The Salt Stays After the Moisture Leaves
Every night along the coast from Ventura through Newport Beach and down past Oceanside and Carlsbad, the marine layer rolls in and lays a film of moisture on everything parked outside. By mid morning the water is gone. The salt that was dissolved in it is not. It remains on every horizontal and vertical surface as a fine crystalline deposit that no one can see and that a dry rag will not remove.
That deposit is hygroscopic. It pulls humidity out of the air the next evening and goes back into solution without any new fog at all, which means the metal underneath it is sitting in dilute salt water for a meaningful share of every 24 hours. This is the mechanism that makes coastal corrosion so much faster than inland corrosion. It is not the occasional splash of ocean water. It is a permanent, self-rewetting electrolyte that reinstalls itself nightly.

Galvanic Corrosion Between Steel Fasteners and Aluminum Panels
Put two dissimilar metals in contact with an electrolyte between them and you have built a battery. Aluminum is anodic to steel, which means the aluminum gives up material to protect the steel fastener sitting in it. On an RV that connection exists at every screw, rivet and bracket where a steel fastener passes through an aluminum skin, and salt film is the electrolyte that closes the circuit.
The visible result is specific and easy to identify once you know it. Rivet heads swell and lift. A white or gray powder weeps from around the head and streaks down the panel below. Owners see it as a cosmetic stain and wipe it off. What it actually indicates is that aluminum around the fastener is being consumed and the fastener is losing cross section. The important consequence is not appearance. It is that the seal at that penetration is already gone, and water has a path into the wall cavity behind it.
- Lifted or swollen rivet heads anywhere on a panel, particularly along lower seams.
- White or gray powder weeping from a fastener, with a streak running down below it.
- Blistering or bubbling paint following a line of fasteners rather than a random shape.
- A dull gray pitted texture on bare aluminum where it was previously smooth.
- Rust weeping from a steel bracket, hinge or step frame onto the surrounding aluminum.
- Any fastener that turns freely or has lost its head profile when a driver is put on it.

Gelcoat Oxidation That Runs Ahead of Pure Ultraviolet
Gelcoat on a coach in Long Beach or Huntington Beach does not just fade the way it would inland. The salt film is mildly abrasive when wiped and mildly alkaline when wet, and it accelerates the breakdown of the resin surface. What you get is chalking earlier in life than sun exposure alone would produce, plus a surface that goes porous rather than simply dull.
Porosity is what matters for repair cost. A dull surface polishes back. A porous surface holds contamination down in it, and nothing sprayed over the top adheres reliably until the porous layer has been sanded away. That is the difference between a couple of hours of detail work at $95 per hour and many hours of body prep at $210. Owners who keep a coating on the gelcoat almost never end up in the second category.

Butyl and Lap Sealant Hardening at Every Penetration
Butyl tape under a window flange is meant to stay plastic. It works by staying soft enough to move as the panel expands and contracts, keeping continuous contact with both surfaces. Salt exposure combined with ultraviolet drives the volatiles out of it faster than inland conditions do, and once butyl hardens it stops moving with the panel. The first cool night after a hot day opens a hairline gap at the flange edge, and that gap does not close again.
Lap sealant on the roof follows the same path. It cracks in a fine web across the surface first, then a crack goes through to the substrate. Neither of these announces itself. There is no drip, no stain, no sound. The water goes into the wall cavity or along the roof decking and travels laterally to a low point somewhere else entirely, which is why the interior evidence shows up far from the entry. On coastal units we check window corners and roof penetrations first, before anything else.

Why Coastal Delamination Starts at the Bottom Seam
Inland delamination usually starts high, at a roof penetration or a window corner, and works down. Coastal delamination frequently starts at the bottom of the sidewall and works up, which throws people who are looking in the wrong place.
The bottom seam is where the sidewall meets the floor structure, and it is the lowest point of every water path in the wall. It is also the surface closest to standing moisture on the pavement and the one that receives the most road spray. Salt collects there, the seal degrades, and moisture wicks upward into the lauan substrate by capillary action. The lauan swells, loses strength and releases from the fiberglass skin, and the separation propagates upward from there. If you press on a coastal sidewall and find a soft spot, start your search at the bottom edge of the wall rather than at the window above it.

Rinse Discipline That Actually Changes the Outcome
The single highest-value habit for a coastal owner is a fresh water rinse, and it works because it removes the salt rather than redistributing it. Wiping a dry salted surface grinds the crystals into the finish. Rinsing carries them off. This is not detailing and it does not need soap every time.
Frequency beats thoroughness here. A five minute rinse every couple of weeks does more for a coastal coach than a full detail twice a year, because salt is deposited continuously and the damage is cumulative. Pay attention to the places rinse water does not reach on its own: the underside of the roof edge trim, the tops of window frames, behind the ladder standoffs and inside the compartment door frames. Those are where corrosion starts on the units we see from Oceanside, Long Beach and Ventura.
- Rinse with fresh water at least every two weeks on a unit that lives within a few miles of the water, more often if it sits uncovered.
- Start at the roof and work down, so the runoff carries salt off the sidewalls rather than depositing it there.
- Direct water at the lower sidewall and the bottom seam deliberately, since that is where salt concentrates most heavily.
- Rinse the undercarriage, frame, steps and any steel bracket you can reach.
- Do not blast directly into window flanges, roof seams or slide seals with a pressure washer, which drives water past the seal.
- Dry or let it sheet off rather than wiping a gritty surface with a dry towel.

Coatings, Isolation and Fastener Replacement Done Right
Rinsing removes salt. A coating keeps it from making contact in the first place. A sealed or ceramic-type coating on gelcoat and paint gives the salt a sacrificial surface to sit on and makes rinsing dramatically more effective, and it slows the oxidation clock at the same time. On bare aluminum, a protective polish and sealant serves the same role.
Where fasteners have already corroded, cleaning them accomplishes nothing durable. The aluminum around them has been consumed and the seal is broken. The correct repair is fastener replacement with proper galvanic isolation between the dissimilar metals, plus resealing the penetration. On heavily affected panels that means working the whole fastener row, not the three that look worst, because the ones that look fine are on the same schedule. What To Check Before You Buy a Coastal Unit
A coach that spent ten years in Oceanside and one that spent ten years in Barstow look similar in photographs and are very different purchases. The coastal unit carries corrosion that a walkaround does not reveal, because the fastener damage is at the interface rather than on the surface, and the delamination starts low where a buyer does not press.
On a coastal used unit we meter the lower sidewall along its full length, check every visible fastener row for lifting and powder, pull a compartment door to look at the frame behind it, and inspect butyl at the window flanges for hardening. A pre-purchase inspection here routinely finds five figures of deferred work on a unit the seller genuinely believed was clean. All inspections are performed in the shop, and the money spent on one is the cheapest money in the whole transaction.

How often should I wash an RV that lives near the coast?

Does salt air really cause delamination?
Indirectly, and it tends to start at the bottom seam rather than the roof. Salt degrades the lower seal, moisture wicks upward into the lauan substrate by capillary action, the substrate swells and loses strength, and the fiberglass skin releases from it. That is why a soft spot on a coastal unit should send you looking at the bottom edge of the wall first.
Can corroded fasteners just be cleaned up?
Not durably. By the time powder is weeping, the surrounding aluminum has been consumed and the fastener has lost section, so the joint is no longer sealed. The correct repair is replacement with proper isolation between the dissimilar metals plus resealing the penetration. On a badly affected panel the whole fastener row gets addressed, because the clean-looking ones are on the same clock.
Is a cover worth it for a coastal RV?
A breathable fitted cover helps meaningfully by reducing how much salt deposits in the first place, and it slows gelcoat oxidation at the same time. A non-breathable tarp is worse than nothing, because it traps moisture against the surface and holds it there. Covered storage is better still if it is available, but rinse discipline matters more than either.
